GEC #86 2021: Angus Jack, 2AB, Spring Street Barlow (BF Knife)

That’s the way Ebony should look! The blacker the better. The black ebony is from the heart of the tree and is heavier and more dense than the lighter sapwood that the medium rare is made from. The medium rare is pretty, but not as dent resistant as the dark heartwood. Classic!!
Gabon Ebony is usually black. Macassar generally has a mixture of heartwood and sapwood. If you pull up Macassar Ebony pics on Google, you'll see what I mean. It's kind of a double edge sword as sapwood is softer and will ding easier, but heartwood is more prone to cracking and checking. They are both beautiful though!

I think there is a slight misunderstanding.

Macassar ebony heartwood is naturally striped light and dark. People with a medium rare 86 Angus did not get sapwood.

Gaboon ebony heartwood, at least the highest grades, are almost pure jet black.

Macassar ebony heartwood is actually a little harder than Gabon ebony heartwood.

hope y'all made it in to collectorsknives, by the time i finally logged in, reserve was red 😂
By pure grace of God, I was at my computer doing interwebs stuff when the notification popped up. I had a hard time clicking the right spots with my adrenaline coursing through me. My nervous, twitchy, fingers had a hard time operating the mouse 😬, but I prevailed and got in when yellow! 🤯 This will be the second reserve I have been successful with this year. The 83's feel so long ago...

Here’s an amazing photo of Macassar Ebony, in one whole slab. The heartwood, which is composed of heart and sapwood, has stripes, but the sapwood, which can be seen on the far right and left sides, do not have any dark stripes. This is the area just under the bark. So the light colored handles with no dark stripes at all could be sapwood, or, they could be cut out of the striped heartwood. Hard so say for sure. In general, the darker is denser.

yea i shouldve tried with the hospital computer, but i barely remember my log in for all of these sites. I wouldve thought with all the internet speed this hospital can muster, I'd stand a chance, but nope.

The heartwood does not have any sapwood “mixed in”, it is just heartwood color variation.

Heartwood is created by the cell death and chemical changes of the interior sections of a tree, while sapwood is the biologically active “living” portion of a tree. The two sections have a fairly distinct visual border when a limb or tree is cross sectioned.

The far left and right portions of the slab you posted do appear to be sapwood, but I do not believe this is used by GEC or anyone else.

I am not aware that lighter heartwood is less dense than darker heartwood in the same tree , and I do not believe the lighter heartwood sections are less hard.

To much for me I’ll have to pass at that price.
GEC knives are not for poor working folks. If those days ever existed, they are long, long, gone. Now they are for the unemployed and underemployed who have nothing more important to do all day than to refresh their websites and notifications from vendors, and for wealthy folks who can afford to pay flippers' prices. But that's OK - there's always CASE, Rough Ryder, and some Chinese brands.

I don't fit into either of those categories. My job is flexible enough to where I can typically, not always, respond to an in-stock notification to buy a knife or get one reserved.

Well it is being compared to a boy's knife. An 86 is for fully grown humans for sure.
😆 🤣 my toddler always trying and grab my knives and my wife says no that's not for tiny humans, it's for big humans. So that got me.

There are many other categories of people that can and do purchase GECs. It takes some effort to learn the in's and outs, however with some patience, want to, and smarts it becomes fairly easy. Those who fail to put in the effort either want someone to do it for them or actually just want to complain. Most probably both. It doesn't hurt to be dashing and funny like me.

Jiki, this isn't quite fair. Some people have jobs that make it largely impossible for them to jump on stock notifications in time to make a purchase.

Are you implying that I do not have one such job? Because I do. Also if you read my post I stated there are many categories of people. Once again with a little effort, want to, and smarts it is doable.
