GEC #89 Fruit Knife...well, that was a surprise!

That's some really good looking acrylic.:thumbsup:

Thanks all for the pic comments. Jon0385 Jon0385 here's another while you wait showing the button, lid, and cool tube. Apples / oranges variety is on the tube, wonder if GEC will change it for the other skus.

Hopefully the others are unique like the apples and oranges one, and not something generic like the navy knives of the past. I think the tube art one these are great.

Hate to be 'that guy', but ive looked everywhere for one of these. Will there be more released?

If anyone is selling, IM BUYING...:D

I swore I wasn't getting one of these, but that acrylic is beautiful -so of course when the opportunity arose I jumped in. Very nice I reckon and great pic chief

Funny thing about this knife. When I was around 5 or 6 years old I found a knife that looked a lot like this apple/oranges melon tester laying in a field. Being so young, my mom took it away with the promise that I would get it back when I was older. Well, that never happened and 50 years later I still think about it. Buying one of these feels a little like finally getting that knife back.

Come to think of it, I wonder who was making a knife like this in 1970?

A youtuber complained that his knife has a proud tip. He continued that he thinks we probably will see a whole lot of proud tips (or blade rep*) in this #89 run due to the handle shape (non pivot end smaller than pivot end).
I noticed that in one picture from a sellers web-page you can also see the tip of the blade in closed position.
I'm signed up for a Lemon Brite and since I'll most likely keep it in the kitchen and use it multiple times per day I'm not that concerned. Had it been on a knife I would carry, I'm not sure if I would have been keen on my order.

*Edited: was supposed to have read blade rap instead of blade rep.

Easy enough to file down that kick a bit.

Unless the edge is already close to hitting the backspring. (I have no idea I’d this is the case or not, haven’t had one of these in hand yet, but in such a slim pattern it could be a concern.)

Is the acrylic red and orange (as would make sense)? It’s a little hard to tell from the pictures...

TSA has them if you’re willing to pay a premium.

Yeah, Ive been grinding my teeth at the ebay flippers for a while now. I refuse to pay almost triple the price.

If possible, I would love to source one from the good folks of this community.

They seem to be dropping in waves if you missed the first and don’t want to overpay..

Thats what I was wondering. I havent seen any of the different handle options yet, only the Apple & Orange Acrylic.
Now that they're on my radar, Im sure ill snag one eventually.

I eat an apple or orange almost daily for lunch, so when I seen these I knew I should at least try one out for a while.

Just realized this but I really like how the cover materials match the logo!
You have apples and oranges acrylic for the apple and oranges in the basket.
Then the Lemon Brite acrylic for the single lemon in the basket.
For the basket itself you have the chestnut.

Though I can see how Acrylic and stainless make for a nice pairing in a knife that is marketed as a "fruit knife", I am still not much of a fan of acrylics. Not because they don't look nice on occasion but because they have a rather awful tactile feel to them (or lack thereof) - to me, it feels slimy... (weird, right?). I have one GEC with acrylic covers but I only have it due to it being a pivotal part of one of my collections.

That said, I enjoy seeing the pics of those who get more enjoyment out of the acrylics. I am looking forward to my Chestnut when it gets produced - hoping they don't finish it like they have been finishing their Ironwood...

Boy these 89s will disappear on you. Slender knife, just vanishes in your pocket. Real nice fit and finish with a very light pull, no gap’s anywhere. I do like the apple and oranges acrylic which works well on this frame. Still not a fan of this recent acrylic run with its seams. However, due to the slender nature of the knife the straight lines within the acrylic aren’t as noticeable. No protruding tip, but this has to be the dullest GEC I’ve ever received, just skips over paper.

Watch out for that finger with the blade partially open like that! ;) I had a #23 open about the same while taking a picture and (stupidly) put my thumb where it shouldn’t have been when I picked the knife up. Let’s just say thank god for thumbnails. o_O

I’m a bit surprised to hear about the factory edge, it seems like GEC has been doing better at sharpening lately.
