GEC #89 Fruit Knife...well, that was a surprise!

got some fruit in the mail yesterday

Watch out for that finger with the blade partially open like that! ;) I had a #23 open about the same while taking a picture and (stupidly) put my thumb where it shouldn’t have been when I picked the knife up. Let’s just say thank god for thumbnails. o_O

I’m a bit surprised to hear about the factory edge, it seems like GEC has been doing better at sharpening lately.
Good advice @btb01! I would never get my fingers underneath a partially open 23, the ones I have are bear traps.

The 23 gave me my worst cut ever with a pocket knife. I’m really excited for the glow in the dark acrylic. This will be my first (and much needed in Hawaii) stainless GEC.

BTW the chestnut is looking nice.

There we go. That chestnut is looking nice. I got a A&O, and it's good, but that's what I really want.

A youtuber complained that his knife has a proud tip. He continued that he thinks we probably will see a whole lot of proud tips (or blade rep*) in this #89 run due to the handle shape (non pivot end smaller than pivot end).
I noticed that in one picture from a sellers web-page you can also see the tip of the blade in closed position.
I'm signed up for a Lemon Brite and since I'll most likely keep it in the kitchen and use it multiple times per day I'm not that concerned. Had it been on a knife I would carry, I'm not sure if I would have been keen on my order.

*Edited: was supposed to have read blade rap instead of blade rep.
I received mine yesterday and indeed the tip is proud by a small bit. However, it is not enough to bother me and I really like the knife. It will be a user for sure.

Just got my A/O. It's my first GEC stainless and first GEC acrylic. I had a bit of a start when I pulled the tube out of the box as it felt empty it was so light. Pics coming....

Mine has arrived and I confess to a measure of disappointment. Fit and finish, walk and talk -- all perfect. (No proud tip, either.)

There's a big seam on the pile side acrylic, which I don't think would bother me if it weren't accompanied by white swirls in amongst the lovely orange and red. They look quite out of place, given the name of the acrylic, and I have to agree with the assessment that this is dead skunk with some sort of orange "backing." Viewed from the edges, the orange disappears and the white swirls show up prominently. Takes the wind out of my sails a bit, so no pictures for now; I may just post it up for someone else to enjoy.

Still! To be so fortunate that this is something I can grumble about is quite a thing. ;)

Dang those look so good!

Judging from that picture on GECs website there are about 50 there. Even the number of open tubes compared to knives on the table basically match up.
Seems to reason there are going to be 50 of each offering. 150 total.

Seems like pretty good odds for one to find its way home.

Mine came in today too. I’m with you, the white kind of kills it. It’s almost like mine is apples, oranges and onions. Overall it is a nice knife. I’m not sure if it’s for me.

It’s not onions it’s whipped cream.

I would be very surprised if there are only 50 of each #89.

Looking at the production totals, I agree with you. They are consistently making runs of 500+.

Ive been out of the loop for awhile. This one caught my eye, so im investigating a bit.
This pic showing ~50 as well if you count the slabs as pairs.
I wonder if they just work on 50 at a time, at each station maybe...

mine does the same thing when on edge. It does seem like the backs of the covers are painted to add the orange but when compared next to dead skunk the red really look the same and I would have expected orange to cause a change in the red shade.
