The correct name for the outer surface is "cover".
A lot of folks use the term "scales", but to a cutler, the "scales" are an internal part of the knife.
I believe that the micarta covers are impregnated with epoxy and should never separate or deteriorate even when exposed to various chemicals etc. Any knife I have with micarta has worn just as well as any delrin covered knife I have.
This thread (last post) is just shy of one year old and since another run of #71s should be coming our in a relatively short time, I am bringing it back to page one of the forum as there is good info in it. If there is no interest it will just fade into never never land again. There is a good discussion of the finishing of the canvas version and linen version of the micarta used for the 71s.
I agree with the wear of Micarta, it's tough material considering what goes into manufacturing it, layer by layer.
I'm still hopefully rooting for another sfo run of OD Green Canvas Micarta, if not a natural canvas micarta would work just as well
No, I don't mind Bob. That's a nice knife. Good choice using a GEC bail for it. Here's a GEC bail on mine. The #71s regardless of cover material make great work knives or just general purpose knives.
