GEC Conductor

I just received the #33 that "Seadweller" referenced. Fit and finish is 100%. By the way, was is the angle for my Sharpmaker? I have done a search on the forum and GEC website and cannot find any info.

ah, #33, Conductor, yes...I love it, dearly.
and..I just lost it. hhhhh....

Hey Jake, Pretty much all of my stainless GECs came with great edges and these were no different. The carbon ones were very sharp too. I only sharpened one of the elks so far and it feels like it took a little more effort than the ebony one to sharpen.
Yeah, i ordered a stag Northfield in 1095 and got a stag GEC in 440c. The stag is nice (isn't it always?) so i kept it, but the stainless is definitely harder to sharpen, but the fit n finish is top notch, like always. I'll still end up ordering a stag 1095...

Hi Fausto, The second from the left is in my pocket now. It is 9mm wide which puts it between a Case Yellow Pen (8.5mm) and a Case Yellow Peanut (10mm) while having longer blades than both. At 2.5", the clip is plenty big enough for what I need in the day. It is longer than the #25s true but just as thin and with 2 blades, 1 of which is longer, which also makes it a better option in my opinion..

Trand,
thanks for the info. Actually, the main blade of the Conductor seems perfectly right to me (2,5" is good enough for my tasks). I just wish for slightly wider handles for handling comfort, I guess it's just a matter of habit. Nonetheless, this knife is very appealing and classy to me, especially the stainless models with darker handles.

I recently acquired an Ebony SFO with the Coping secondary and bail. I find myself carrying this knife 2-3 days a week, and I couldn't help but think that as great as it looks "stock", it would look so much better with some etched blades.
So I went to the Radio Shack and picked up some ferric chloride and spent some time on a CV Sodbuster, practicing.
Here are the results of my first attempts at using the FeCl3 on the GEC 1095. I did both blades and the backspring, then a little Flitz leaving an aged look, and finally strop the edges to bring back the shine. I may give it another round to darken them up a bit, but for now they have the aged look I had envisioned before I started.

What do you think?

Looks great Stu. It's a great looking pattern as well. I've been thinking that it might turn out to be the knife that could unseat the mini copperhead as my favorite. I like the copperhead bone someone else posted too. - Ed J

Wow, there's been some great looking knives posted here guys!

Stu, that blade etch looks fabulous. And great looking stag, jnevill

For you guys that have one with the bail - how do you like the bail? Does it enhance or detract from your grip when using the clip blade? Feel good, or weird? How about when using the secondary blade?

Easy question.
I think you've done an awesome job on those blades and I guess they look even better "live" than in a picture. As a sidenote, and considering the handle material, I wouldn't go darker than that, but it's personal taste.
Great job

Stu that etching looks great. I just ordered one of these in Gabon ebony. A very classy looking knife.

This forum really is a bad influence on addicted knifers.
I decided i needed an ivory Conductor. Seems the only one with ivory is a Northfield with a bail. At first i thought one without the bail would be 'better', but that didn't last long. I have a nice collection of high quality vintage Pen knives; U.S.A., Sheffield and German and a bail on a Pen knife of this size is quite traditional. Plus it's got grooved bolsters and a shield that i prefer over the 'hotdog'.
I managed to get what i think was the last one from one of our friendly 'knifer guy' dealers.
Likely i will need to be nose oiling the ivory to encourage a more creamy-yellow color.
Merry Christmas Roland !

Also want to say that i prefer the Pen over the Coping blade for the secondary. I think a Pen blade is the single most useful profile of all and second is a Clip blade.
So a Clip and a Pen on a single spring: you can't beat that for a pocket knife.

Concerning the pen...I agree Roland! Also, I like the fact the pen has a lower profile (when closed) than the coping blade.

That looks great!

Thanks for the nice comments guys!

Now I am fighting the urge to do this to more knives :D

Roland, I bet that Ivory makes for a timeless piece.
As for a Pen secondary vs Coping/Wharnie, I'm 50/50. I like a small Wharnie, or Coping blade like the Conductor has, but I don't really care for a full size version of either. I picked this one for the solid Ebony scales with no shield.
I plan on picking up another Conductor with the Pen secondary but I can't decide on bail or no bail, Elk or Stag, wood or bone. Maybe I need more than one more?

Comments are widely deserved...I don't mean to influence your choice  but if you plan to do the same treatment on your next Conductor, I guess Elk would be the best choice to match your etched blades.:)

I couldn't stand it any longer. I had some good fortune yesterday and finally broke down and ordered a Conductor. I'm a sucker for bails (Scout leader ;)), and the Burnt Sienna Jig Bone looks just right.

I am not looking forward to my bills from this month...:p
