GEC Fixies,

I am not sure why. But these little knives fascinate me. I saw one in a thread here recently. That had me doing searches. A few more popped up.

I went to GEC's website. Most show as out of stock and don't even list a picture.
Then I systematically went through their listed dealer websites. Some don't even carry GEC Knives any more. Most that do are folder focused. One site had about three for sale. I almost pulled the trigger, but decided to learn more about them first.

Most websites show out of stock if they list them at all.

Another search on here led me to a thread that basically said GEC should stick to folders. Because their fixed blades just look like folders anyway. Like the 73, I believe.

But I don't find that with the H10 and its kin. To me they look like a sweet little Baby Bowie. I see some are Stainless and some are 1095. Depending on where they originate.

Just wondering is the chase worth the effort?

And for my continuing education here in Traditional Land.
How does one pronounce Tidioute??

Pictures, side by side comparisons, in action shots, truth, lies, video tape. What do you folks have.

One thing that really peaks my interest is a top shot of the knife. Full tang with what looks to be a distal taper. Also looks to be a Full Flat Grind?

Seems like for its size this would make a sweet little camp slicer. And just a nice belt carry knife in general.

I even looked at one dealer's youtube review. He seemed underwhelmed.
Basically he said, "Well it's a fixed blade. So there isn't much to show or say. Here it is. I'll turn it around for you"

Quite possibly the worst review of any knife I have ever seen on youtube.

But what do these knives look like? ;)

I cannot post pics right now, but I picked up an H20 drop point last year. I have ham hocks for hands, but I carry the bird and trout style fixed blade from time to time around the neck. I had originally thought the handle way too small for me when I first got it, but it isn't bad for precision use (not like I'm performing open heart surgery or fine whittling though). I would like to see a larger handle with the same size/length blade, and a different sheath. That would jack the price up though.

I have one of their little H20s. It's a nice, inexpensive paring knife for the kitchen. For their larger hunting knives I have handled a few, but haven't owned any. I was pretty underwhelmed with the ones that I handled, to be honest. I think you'll get a better designed knife for less elsewhere.

Hess Knifeworks hires GEC to make their blades. Their knives are much more desirable, in my opinion, and are competitively priced compared to GEC fixed blades. Other makers that compete in this same space, but I feel offer more bang for the buck, are LT Wright and Battle Horse Knives. If you compare knives from these three makers to GECs in the same price bracket there is little question in my mind that GEC is out of their element. The only thing that the GECs have going for them is the GEC name.

Tidioute is pronounced Tidi-oot.

I think they just made a few more H10's and maybe the larger H14? Not sure of the larger knife number. Anyway I think they made more in late November 2015. Lostviking I'm PMing you.

I got a few of the fixed blades and this time of year do duty as steak knives that even my wife enjoys using...
They are flat ground and great for slicing...the SS ones are perfect then for no fuss after eating....just warned the wife not to place in the dishwasher.
I find the H73 the most friendly for EDC use as the guards on the other two knives get in the way for choking up. The micarta handled one (H60) is on the rough side for prolonged use, but if you wear gloves it won't matter.
For bushcrafting yes other brands are available to try... Battle Horse (A2,D2, 1095) and LT wright (1095 mostly) as been mentioned. Bark River, tho price higher has great SS steel.

If Trands gets on the thread we will see a whole bunch from his collection:D

Have an orange H20 I picked up last yr at the end of bunny season.. Did manage to get blood on this season a few times!! I have lg hands and it fits my grip just fine!! John

This is the only GEC fixed blade I have handled it's a H23. I use it solely for when I'm out hunting. It's well built and very pleasing to the eye!

I did have a larger GEC fixed blade a couple years ago, sort of like the fixed 73/23/42 pattern. I was already deep into customs and companies like Bark River and Blind Horse, so it didn't get much love. For basic bird and trout knives, or even an alternative EDC knife, the H20 serves it's purpose. It sits next to my Gossman UNK, Gossman 3" Kephart and Gossman PSK Jr. Something like the PSK or a small Blind Horse workhorse would probably be a more suitable knife for everyday carry.

I have an H10 soup bone that I'm happy with...

Next to a pioneer alox and GEC 77/Washington Jack for size reference....

Fixed blades are probably just a sideline for GEC. But they have a draw for me, and I picked up an H73 in an upland pattern, and I love it.
I am planning on buying another fixed from them, when my wallet allows. I have been looking at the Hess knives also.

Thanks for the pronunciation lesson.

Yeah, I have a few Barkies, Aurora, Bravo, Boone, and others. I also have a Forest, Genesis, and Cavello from LT Wright.
Even a Muley and one more from Hess. Add in a few Marbles, some Fallknivens, and some customs. And yet I stil find the H10 pattern interesting.

My stainless H10 works great when camping. I caught it on sale somewhere years ago, and I'm glad I did.

Hamsco,

I love eliptical blades. I am a big fan of both Marbles Woodcraft, and Fieldcraft, as well as the Grohmann line. The #3 being my favorite of that bunch.

Like a Sheffield I guess?

Here is a link to some web photos. Best I can do for now.

Once I own one, you will see some shots of it in the woods. Possibly in the wood, in the woods. Hacking bird, beef, and swine, for sure. Perhaps even popping the top off a McEwan's Scotch Ale or three.

Also, here is a shot from Baldy McBalders Post # 2521 on Wooden Wdnesdays
That ironwood burl is amazing Double Ott!
A late submission, but this showed up late yesterday; new GEC H10 in 1095 and cocobolo. Showed up sharper than any other knife I have received out of the package, including my Moras.

But I'm guessing you have seen this. Since you are posted up on Post 2523 of that thread. This shot is one of those ones that got me to contemplating this knife. How can you not like those lines?
