GEC Huckleberry Boy's Knife

I don't understand the "scout" shield, but I was hoping a #15 would come out with a classic shield pattern. I think I could get rid of all my "users" if I could get a pair of EO #15s in ebony and rust red jigged bone, propeller or cloud shields, and cap lifter secondary blades!

^^this^^ this pattern was an instant classic for GEC and it has so much potential. They have done a fantastic job, especially with the charlows, but I was hoping for a more classic shield and maybe a few spear main blades in these runs. They are trying something different and "fun" probably. Let's see if it pays off.

FWIW, I am having a heck of a hard time. I was thinking I would finally get a Charlow when the sheepsfoot came out, but with an EO notch and a shield to add a little bonus visual interest (Ebony and African blackwood don't always give you a lot of grain to look at) the Boy's Knife is back in serious contention for me.

I think this will be the first Boys Knife that I pull the trigger on..

I like the look of this, but don't really understand the Scout shield. For me the Sheepesfoot Charlow still has the edge. Still a nice-looking pattern though, and should be a good working knife :)

I have one of these pre-ordered and I am happy with the design. While I don't understand the shield either, it is actually starting to grow on me. Pretty classic design in my opinion and I will most likely take a little off the kick to lower the blade in the frame, looks to be plenty of room. With the EO present I am hoping for a stronger spring than the other 15's.

Hmmm....still trying to figure out what I think of this one. I guess I was hoping for an EO #15 with no shield, just clean and simple - which is what I like about the #15s. I might warm up to it, though...

Not warming up to it, shield w/ scout no go for me.

If they're including a shield I'd have preferred it to be sterile. I don't get the Scout stamp on this one either. The question for me now is should I get the single and 2 blade #15 with sheepsfoot blade to replace the #47s I've been using for work knives? I suppose the handle would be more ergonomic but I don't know...

I do like hte look of it, especially the rounded curves all over. I'm also curious about the justification for the scout shield. Their 73 is also informally known as a 'scout', yet on BF, the 'scout knife' is the multitool with awl, screwdriver etc. It would be good to know the historical reason for naming this guy.

Looks lovely to me, and while I like the 15 with no shield, I've been wanting one with a shield even more. I don't know why it says scout on it, and would prefer a blank shield, but I still love it. Now if they make an EZ Open 15 with spear/pen and (blank, preferably) shield, that would be my grail knife. I want a sheepsfoot badly though. I might be getting this.

I dont understand the Scout engraving either. I think I can learn to live with it anyways. The Scout on the shield kind of makes it unique, although I would still prefer it with a blank shield. The EZ open notch is what has me sold on this one.

Seeing as the #15 pattern in both the Boys knife and TC Barlow versions are probably one of GEC's most successful patterns, I see the line continuing with endless possible configurations of varying cover material, blades, and shields.

I also think that the #15 pattern done as a Northfield option would be fantastic! I would love to see this done in Stag, Cocobolo, African Blackwood, Snakewood, etc...

I hoping somebody will uncover the story behind the shield today at the Rendezvous, seems like a perfect opportunity to get the skinny.

I would be all over this!

what would be even more interesting, would be the Northfield version with a much closer copy of the original Remington prototype - with pen, scout hat shield, and bale.

I was able handle these yesterday as the ebony was available for purchase. The 15 is probably my favorite pattern so I'm biased. For me the changes are fine even if its not an exact copy.
I didn't ask specifically aout the shape of the shield. My assumption is that the choice was partially based on the cost effectiveness of using an existing design versus making a new pattern. I commented on the missing bail and Bill said they were one of the more difficult operations. Again I'm thinking the decision to omit helps keeps the end user costs down.

The blade is really nice on these. The swedges were perfect on every on I handled, including the TC versions.

As it's EZ-Open it actually goes well with a shield, and the fourth pin in my opinion. The 56 I have in EZ-Open looks just right with the Tidioute engraved shield, but I'm less sure about this 'scout' thing....wonder if it's deeply struck/stamped....Could it be erased?:D:D:cool:
