GEC new #43 pattern, who’s excited?

I finally caved in and grabbed a very nicely figured cocobolo before they vanished; should be here next week. I really don't care for the nick inside the swedge, but I guess it isn't a deal breaker, as I bought one. Why they didn't continue the practice of the long pull behind the swedge for Northfields, I'll never know. The long pull clip on the #72s and #83s is the nicest one extant.
The long pull definitely looks perfect on that knife. That is one absolutely beautiful knife ya got there..

Hi everyone!

I just received my canvas micarta #43 in the mail and it’s truly a gorgeous knife. I have a few questions about what is considered acceptable regarding fit and finish, as I’m a relatively new knife collector and this is my first GEC knife.

So there seems to be a little bit of exposed canvas at the edges of the covers so it’s a little fuzzy on the edges. Is this normal? Will it wear down?

Also, everyone talks about how wonderful the action is on their knives but mine seems pretty gritty? The surfaces of the tang seem to be the culprit as they appear somewhat unfinished. Should I try to sand that down myself? Do you think GEC would fix it under warranty or am I just nit picking?

Thanks in advance, I’m really sorry to be bashing GEC right now I just kinda expected for the price and reputation that this knife would be substantially nicer than my Case Sodbuster and in some ways it isn’t.

Pictures would be helpful. Have you tried cleaning the pivot?

Try running the pivot under some hot water while opening and closing the knife. Then oil it up with your oil of choice. That should take care of some grittiness.

I used my micarta this morning to help process my turkey today it did a great job. Just ran it a couple times on my strop and it's back to shaving sharp.

And you leave us hanging without pictures of the turkey???

So I did this, and it smooths the action out a little bit, but it still feels gritty and I can see the rough unfinished metal on the back side of the tang and I’m pretty sure it’s the source of the rough action.

As I said before, I’m a new knife collector so maybe my expectations aren’t calibrated yet — but I feel a little let down by my first GEC experience. $80 isn’t pocket change to me and I was hoping for something more refined than my old sod buster that I carry every day haha.

Sometimes there stuff in there you can't see.. sounds odd but pour it full of table salt and work the action...shake it around and do it some more. It will sound real gritty..it works as an abrasive and washes out clean.. it's worked for me for cleaning rust out of places you can't see on folders.

Prepping for Easter feast tomorrow gave my 43 a nice little patina (raw Brussels sprouts and strawberries)

GECs, like any manufacturer, have some variation from knife to knife in a given series. What you must also include when thinking of GEC is that the knives are hand finished. With that, there is quite a bit of variation from one knife to the next. I wouldn't say to expect issues, but they do occur. With regard to your knife, some require a little break in period. Why not try drowning it in oil over the sink, open and close a few dozen times, dry off with a cloth. The open and close will smooth things over, the oil will wash the filings out.
