GEC Radio Knife

I might not have looked hard enough but can someone tell me why its a radio knife? Is this the knife you have after work when you sit down to listen to the radio and drink a cold beverage?

A while back, I posted this knife on the "Elusive Schrades" thread.

Then someone came along and posted this one!!

Since then, a couple more have popped up with Radio-related advertising.
Seems it was a favorite give-away/premium/advertising knife during "earlier" radio days, maybe even before Television became ubiquitous.

Seems reasonable to call it a Radio-knife. It's more interesting than Screwdriver-knife or Caplifter knife (even if it is referred to as the Caplifter most of the time!!:D

JerryIsAlive and Old & In The Way, you two know each other? Just how many deadheads do we have on this thing? Count me in as one. And ummm... Knife talk.... I didn't think hippies were so forward thinking as to get something to open their beers ahead of time.... ;)

Count me in too. (Even though my screen name is a Zevon tune.) I used to carry a SAK to shows for opening heady brews on the lot. Buckeye Lake was my favorite.

I'll grab one of these if I can afford it. Should be a good seller considering how desirable the 2011 forum knife is round these parts.

Interesting thread. I'm currently listening to the 1st set from Winterland 12/31/72 and looking forward to putting the cap lifter on this knife to good use in the near future. I've already got a #15 EO in antique yellow bone so decided to go with ebony on this version.

We wants one. :D

But, my knife budget is currently blown until about 2015. Of course, I could always sell some knives...

The bottle opener looks super thin but it's a very cool knife otherwise.

this is a knife i have been dreaming of! Two things i always have: a knife and a bottle opener. i like saks, but they don't have the same charm as my jigged bone and wooden traditionals. i can't wait till i get my hands on this one. the 15 pattern keeps me coming back to ged time and again.

Say the bottle opener wears out over time/use, would there be a way to fix it? How long/how much use would it take to wear down?

MATE! how much do you drink?
I doubt I could wear out a bottle opener even if I worked at the Caringbah Inn (for several years the place that sold the most beer in NSW and that's a lot).
sorry. in answer to your question -relax you won't wear it out now how bout a beer?

What's everyone's thoughts on this one? I like a knife with a bottle opener. Of course I like bottled beers and cokes. I might need one of these.

I like it! I think its a great little piece of yesteryear, and just in time for when the SHTF and everyone is playing once again with HAM radios to chat back and forth so you all should be prepared for it when and if! Don't know what practical use a bottle opener really serves these days as I make them on my prybar and they are not popular or requested much, nor do folks seem to need them much anymore. Twist off caps and all! Course some say the flat head is worthless these days too and that it should be phillips but that isn't true. Its plenty handy as a pry and scraper also and my most used tool on any knife with a flat head on it. I am a fan of the clip blade so I'm sure I'll have at least one and probably one of each handle if I can find them. I'm sure its another homerun by GEC and that fans will eat it up. I can envision a jigged bone one there with a nice patina on it just fine. I guess that means its mine!

Rust red jigged bone on order, now I can work on my shortwave receiver;)

The pattern is reminiscent of Electricians' knives that were marketed to radio hobbyists back in the '30's. I know I saw some catalog pictures here somewhere...

Hope this is not too much of a diversion from the original focus of the thread. The page is from an early 1930s Wostenholm brochure.

I think this is an old Philips radio knife. It has large and small flat head screwdrivers, wire stripper, and small wood borer.

I found this image of a catalog page when searching for "Radio Knife" earlier. I'm not sure where this knife may or may not fit, but thought it might be of interest:
