so -- 10' 4" Viper kayak -- looks a lot like an Equinox 10.4 with a different label -- which gets decent reviews as a beginner 'yak.
anyone here familiar with them and are they any good?
if yes, I can score a pair for me and SWMBO for less than $350 new according to the sale flyer i got in the mail today.

Hey Vik, I would never want to discourage anyone from getting into kayaking. And while this kayak you've pictured may be just the thing to get you started, I don't think you will be happy with it. My first Kayak did just that. I used the hell out of it for 1 summer then sold it. It was a 10ft. Old town. It was less stable than the longer ones and very uncomfortable on any trips longer than a hr. Didn't have any room for gear. I replaced it with a 12ft. Preception with a dry stern and a much more open cockpit for my big ass to get it and out. Made a huge diference. I still have it, but ran into a awesome deal a couple of years ago on a tandom. It was $900. And I got it for $400. The store said no body wants tandoms and they had it for 4 yrs. I love it. The forward seat slides to the middle for when your by yourself, it has a 500lb. Wieght cap. and is very stable, only wieghs 20 lbs more than my perception and is 2 ft. Longer. Might be something to think about for a big dude such as yourself.

Anyone know anything about micrometers? I'm looking at something 0-1" for occasional use when I need a bit more accuracy than my calipers. Would the Mitutoyo 103-260-99 be decent?

do you need 0.001" or 0.0001"?

I have a small collection of mics, including several 0-1".
They're easy to find used around here because they used to make 'em all over this state.
$10-$20 at flea markets in decent condition - Brown&Sharpe (Providence), Starrett, Central (Cranston), J.T. Slocomb (Providence), etc.

What's your budget and accuracy requirements? Do you need a barrel lock, slip-adjuster (don't know the real term), and a vernier ten-thousandths scale?

Agreed with Todd, skip digital. More crap to go wrong. A mic is a VERY simple (but precisely manufactured!) instrument. The barrel thread is 40/inch, so one revolution of the barrel produces 0.025" of movement. Precision markings on the device mark travel. No need for digital unless you wear quadrofocals.

Oh, and you'll need a 1-2" for handloading too (and a 2-3", and a... and a...). ;-)

good advice and exactly the sort of thing I was wondering about on it -- I may still pick one up for the girl, because that's a killer deal on something that will likely not be used much.

If that kayak is the same as the Equinox, that link you posted said it's good for 275 lbs. I'd have to lose weight first, haha.

according to the ad, it's rated to 300 - so it may not be an equinox -- or they may just not be building in as much "slush" into their rating. either way, the girl is half my size, so i can make her haul all the gear, right? :D

Any of you computer guys know why all of the sudden I can't upload anything to photobucket? Some background cache I need to clear maybe? I would also like to say that I really hope that Procter and Gamble is actually coming out with Bacon flavored Scope mouthwash because I am absolutely tired of offending my constituents with overly minty breath. It stings the eyes.

I like seeing pretty women with t-shirts that say "Go Cocks!" or "I ♥ Cocks!"

It is my understanding that there is capacity limit on photobucket that can be met, specifically for sets or groups, so that one might need to make a new folder or set to contain pictures. Might look in that direction.

Anything Mitutoyo is good. Just make sure you get a master with it and it should be good. Stay away from the digitals though. Cause if your just gonna use them ocationally and your luck is like mine, the batteries will be dead when you need it.

Thanks for the replies. I don't really need to .0001, but if I'm going to buy one, I may as well make it useful for anything. Right now I just want one for some reloading measurements. I'm looking at a 0-1". I think for what I need my calipers(Mitutoyo) are accurate enough, but I would like to make sure some measurements are more precise. Also, its always fun to have new gadgets to fiddle with. As far as budget goes, I might go up to around $100.

I'm not exactly sure what I need so simple is probably best. I was planning on skipping the digital micrometers and just going with a regular one.

AAAAHHHHAAAAA!!!!!!!

Still working odd but at least it lets me upload now. Thanks.

My computer crashed a bit ago and I am working out how to deal with windows 8. At this point I am not a fan at all.

Easy fix, Format, reinstall windows 7, go outside and baton win 8 disc with Becker of choice, post pics.

I ordered some Chinese firesteels from fleabay a little over a week ago and they got here yesterday (not bad for China). I got three 5/16 by 4" for $7.50 shipped---They throw some very nice gobs of sparks--they leave your hands a little sooty so I use some sandpaper and got alot of the coating off (still leaves a little on your hand)--I wanted to put a handle on one but didnt have time to do one out of wood/bone so I used the next best thing.......paracord------I think it turned out pretty good. It feels very good in the hand and the ferro rod wont come out of the wrap unless I pull it really really hard.

So, this after my original plan for this weekend busted, I decided to say screw it, I'm currently in Springfield, Ill. I came to see family. Now I am just waiting for them to get home, the only problem... I really have to pee. NOT GOOD!

aye, matey.
Microsoft batonned the architect of Windows-8, and the former members of the Windows-7 team I know aren't fans either.

fill the birdbath.

OFM4, nice steel! I don't think I ever would have thought about using a paracord wrap for it.

Oh, and I picked up a 14 for my brother. He's been eyeing mine ever since I brought my first one up here. He doesn't know he is getting it but it will be a nice surprise to go with the kitchen knives they are getting.

Picked up an Esee-3Mil for me. The one I had was a clip point but the cops kept harassing me that since the "clip point" is a sharpened swedge that I was carrying a double edged knife. This will lessen the hassle on THAT end. We'll have to see what new stuff they can find right?

Good mornin' Fellas!

Wow! That turned out great. Like the clip. I've got a couple of blank steels I need to handle and may steal your idea.
