Gentleman's Folder

I guess, if you ask an open-ended question, this is what you get.

Made me laugh, though. :D

If we had a price range, and some examples of your taste in knives, you'd probably get a lot better advice. As is, I'll just offer my favorites.

Benchmade 960, with red handles,
Spyderco Kopa with any of the beautiful natural handles
Spyderco Caly III with Carbon Fiber
William Henry, anything
A. G. Russell folders (several designs available)
Lone Wolf Paul knives (again, several designs available)
Kai Gentleman's Personal Steak knife

Hey guys, thanks for all the great suggestions, and Im looking heavily at several of them. In response to some of your questions, unfortunately I do not have the money for most custom folders, and my budget is preferably less than $100. I was looking for something that is one-handed opening, and has a stylish wood-resembling handle, like dymondwood. Thanks.

I buy my knives at Ebay since European stores are expensive and US stores charge criminally amounts of shipping. Where do you buy your knives if I may ask and to be specific; Where did you buy your Exskelibur 2?

Usually I buy on ebay - if the shipping cost is ok. The Exskelibur 2 however was bought in a local shop at the Boker list price.

Many of the nicer wooden-handled gentlemen knives are actually 2 hand openers.
Even so, after a bit of searching I found THIS lovely Mcusta for just a hair above your maximum:

I saw a couple klotzis on the bay. Is there anywhere else? How's the f&f? Are the blades centered?

Very interesting to see the variety of items that folks consider to be "Gentlemans Knives." :)

That's not plastic, that's carbon fiber, one of the classiest materials for a knife handle.
LOL! Yeah, carbon fiber is totally different than plastic. :p

Comes from roots of the ancient carbon fiber tree, does it not? ;) Wealthy gentlemen often smoked from carbon fiber pipes during the Victorian and Edwardian Periods, if I'm not mistaken.

[no need to say it; everyone already knows I'm a jerk]

Where can find Klotzis at? Are they custom? They look incredible!

They are not custom, but made to the same high precision standard. I consider them the European equivalent to Chris Reeve, but they are more slanted towards gentlemen designs. While they can still be used pretty hard, they are rathere a more than interesting alternative to the Mnandi than to the Sebenza. All this in my opinion of course.
You can for example find them HERE, HERE or HERE.

The Walker 05 is in my opinion the most beautiful one:

It is very different. Feels so good and looks great, too. Also, it may interest you to know that all gentlemen are made out of carbon. Carbon has the most mass of any solid in the body. Without carbon, there would be no hoity-toity people like certain posters on this thread.

I was thinking about this thread, and two things came to mind. First, would a pocket clip be misplaced on a gentleman's folder? And second, is one hand opening a desirable thing on a upper-class and elegant folder ?

Like everyone here I want my blades to be practical and readily available to me, but if looks and refinement should play an important part in my decision to pick a particular folder or not, then maybe these characteristics should be avoided. What do you guys think?

I think the term gentleman folder is very broad.
I suggested the Buck Nobleman and some one else mentioned the Böker Plus Exskelibur for example. They are both good looking knives and they could be classified (in my opinion) as gentleman folders. But I feel they are classified as gentleman folders in the widest sense of the term.

When I think of a true/real gentleman folder I see a slick folder with a very pretty handle. Preferably in some nice colours or patterns. It also does not have a clip. It also does not have one hand opening. Basically I visualize a very pretty slipjoint.

However while I think a clip has no place on a true gentleman folder for aesthetic reasons, I don't see why one hand opening couldn't.

Hope this thread continues because I'm in the mood for shopping for a true Gentleman folder myself, preferably under $40. :)

+1

I have three knives that I consider real gentlemen's folders. They happen to fall into three different price ranges.

Kershaw Sapphire - Blue anodized Ti scales, SS liner lock, AUS-8 polished blade, tip up/tip down pocket clip. Found this for about $50.00

Spyderco Abalone/Pearl Kopa -- Satin finished blade with a back lock. The scales are SS with layered abalone and mother of pearl inlays. These go for around $100.00

William Henry B12 - TZ Spearpoint -- Satin finished laminated ZDP-189 blade, Ti scales w/ 3 anodized cutout stripes, button lock and thumbstud are inlayed with Sapphires, blue anodized pocket righty/lefty pocket clip. These go for around $400.00

I would be proud to carry an of these three knives.
