Gentleman's Folder

...and well over my budget for a Gentleman's Folder. Fortunately, this MCusta was a Christmas gift from my daughter and son-in-law and I was delighted to receive it. It's a dandy! :D

When I asked about the clip and one hand opening feature, I was thinking about a dress watch. A really elegant dress watch should be analogue, not digital, and preferably with a leather strap instead of a metal bracelet. Let me give you pictures of what I'm saying.

A dress watch:

This is a Tissot Le Locle with power reserve, and as soon as I got it I switched the bracelet to a black leather strap. It has a small case (~42 mm), the dial is simple but with some embellishments, only has date, and overall the watch is very discreet. It looks good with the metal bracelet, but it looks even more refined with a leather strap, so that's why I swapped it.

The Orient 300 m Diver, on the other hand, is a sports watch. Big case (48 mm), screaming dial, day and date, big and beefy bracelet and with a preeminent bezel. I think that no one would argue that a G-Shock would even be better to convey the image of a sports watch, so I wanted to show something a bit less explicit.

So if I (try to) apply those concepts to a folder, I would say that a gentleman's folder should not be too big, have a ornamented but not loud handle, made in discreet colors or materials, no pocket clip and won't be a one hand opener. It has to be elegant and discreet, with no features that would give it a military or tactical look. Think of what folder would be better to use if you were in a black tie event.

Of all the folders that I know, the only ones that would be like that would be some custom ones. So far, though very good looking, all of the factory examples that I've seen fall short in one aspect or another. To each his own, I know, but if we're talking about a truly gentleman's folder that's how I would imagine one.

Hey Dude this isn't TimeZone forum. Get your hairy arm off my PC monitor unless you're shaving it with a knife....lol :D

.. my budget is preferably less than $100. I was looking for something that is one-handed opening, and has a stylish wood-resembling handle, like dymondwood. Thanks.

Ok, I haven't handled these personally but they look great, and Maserin makes very good knives...

You should look at the Mcusta line as well, they run about $90-130 for most of their models. Look here...

Al Mar makes a few in this range, such as their HAWK or Falcon models, like this...

Boker has a few like this, but you are a little limited trying to find more tactical (one-hand opening) knives with natural handle materials. If you move to man-made materials, the world opens up for you in Kershaw, Spyderco, and Benchmade knives that could fit the bill for ~$100.

Let us know what you pick.

Buck 500 Duke N/S bolsters Rosewood scales slimline 3" blade-perfect. Have to look for em though cause the're disco'd. 501 a little smaller still available.

2nd from the top-may also consider the Vantage Pro at the top-also slim line for casual slack pocket carry but maybe more tactical than your looking for.(I dont think it is)

Spyderco Leafstorm or the AG Russell Spear point Sting. The Sting is a sleeper!!

I've always thought the Buck 500 series make nice gentleman knives, especially the 503, as other members have mentioned earlier. Something timeless about wood handle scales coupled with nickel silver bolsters. Very clean.

Hey guys, thanks for all the great suggestions, and Im looking heavily at several of them. In response to some of your questions, unfortunately I do not have the money for most custom folders, and my budget is preferably less than $100. I was looking for something that is one-handed opening, and has a stylish wood-resembling handle, like dymondwood. Thanks.

You mentioned one hand opening and dymondwood.

imafritz mentioned the Buck Vantage Pro.
Buck also has the Vantage Avid with: Handle Material: CNC contoured Charcoal Dymondwood®

It is also one hand opening, might want to check it out.

How does that Vantage Avid open? Flipper or do you have to catch that little cut out with your thumb?

I take care in only showing the top of my left forearm... The underside is a waaaaay less hairy :p.

I find the more traditional blades don't raise hysterics as much :)

Here's an old Schrade LB5 and what I think is a Camillus Craftsman. Both carry comfortably in the pocket:

It's plastic to me.

Natural materials are classy.

It may interest you to know that all gentlemen are made out of carbon. Carbon has the most mass of any solid in the body. Without carbon, there would be no hoity-toity people like certain posters on this thread. Carbon is the most natural thing in the world.

how about one of the smaller spyderco knives with stainless handles? I allways think they look pretty classy,

It has a flipper.
It isn't very easy to open it with the cut out.

I do like the dymondwood, sometimes prefer it to real woods.

Gentleman's folder you say? Pick the one which best suits this occasion:

It is early Spring, and you are at a social gathering on the veranda of a Victorian mansion situated on 700 acres just outside of Charleston, SC. A cool spring breeze is bringing the smell of ribs from the grill. An intoxicating aroma of charcoal and sizzling meat.

The estate's owner, a very attractive young widow who recently inherited a shipping fortune of almost $800M, is clearly captivated by your charm and good humor. She approaches, accompanied by her twin sister who has returned just this morning from boarding school in Switzerland. After a shy giggle and a bit of conversation, the young widow flings her long, brown hair away from her face and asks if you might slice a lime for her Gin and Tonic. As she does so, you sense the slightest whiff of her scent, which is quickly replaced by that of the grill. You find yourself suddenly hungry, though for what you know not.

You:

a) remove your Spyderco Camo Military with black blade from your pocket, and it snaps open with a satisfying clunk. The young widow retracts in fear and drop her Gin and Tonic. Her security personnel wrestle you to the ground and remove you from the estate; or,

b) you casually remove a small, finely crafted folder hand-made of exquisite and costly materials. You expertly slice the lime with its razor edge, and place a slice in the widow's drink. As you do so, your hand casually touches hers, precipitating her to blush. But the blush is accompanied by an unblinking stare into your own eyes, and you see her pupils dilate ever so slightly. After an embarrassed pause, she asks if you might accompany her and her sister on a private walking tour of the riding stables. You accept, and begin your stroll as the sun begins to set behind the adjacent hills.

If your answer is b), you were carrying the right gentleman's folder.
Lol, a diamond coated mnandi? :D
