Good blade for heavy abuse?

You need a Strider. I cut through a 1 millimeter steel cable last night with my AR. They will put up with just about any abuse.

The Buck/Strider is also a good choice.

It's pretty hard to find something with the thinness to strength ratio necessary for screws.

I can only think of a few that I'd be willing to carry. The sexiest of the bunch would probably be a Stanley 60-002.

That Stanley is SEXXXY! Good Choice! I need a towel :D

In fact, you CAN open a Leatherman Wave knife blade with only one hand, as well as close it. It's designed for that. Or, for that matter, the "Charge", which I think would qualify as "Sexy".

I bet if you ask any 20 Bladeforums ladies, they'll tell you that if they were to see someone using a very nice knife with a pointy tip to try to unscrew a philips head screw, "sexy" would be the LAST word that would come to their mind.

look at this statement. knives are tools, and tools are supposed to be used. The best functioning tools are usually not "Sexy".

Knives, however, are supposed to be sexy.

But here is the best choice: get one of the mini tools here:atwood knives
it would fit on your keyring and they look really sexy. ;)

I suppose I should have mentioned that I already have 3 outdoor fixed blades, 2 multitools, a SAK and several toolboxes, so I'm really not looking for a multitool. If I didn't already have several I might actually get one.

The knife's for me, I don't care if someone else thinks my use of it is sexy.

Thanks, the Buck Strider does look good, and somewhat in my price range.

Tanto style blade would be my choice, you can bugger up the tip by using it as a screwdriver, use it as a scraper, chisel, hole punch, whatever - and still keep the rest of the blade sharp for when you need to use a knife. I have an old Tanto CS Voyager which I've used in this manner for many years, it has served me well and didn't cost an arm and a leg. You could even grind a bit of the tip to make it more suitable as a screwdriver.

 SAK blades suck, they're good for everything except the knife.

I can vouch for this. The blades just don't cut it for any type of screw. :p

Seriously, you're having trouble because you're using a knife as a screwdriver. But, there is the Smith & Wesson First Response Knife which has a screwdriver tip on the blade.

It also has a glass breaker. Think of all the inappropriate uses for that! :)

Hope this helps.

Uh....sure....

I used my SAK Soldier this winter when I was laying down laminate flooring on the entire downstairs. From cutting carpet, to cutting underlayment (with the edge repeatedly hitting concrete, to deburring end cuts, this knife did it all with only a touchup or two. Now I'll admit that it wasn't the primary carpet cutting knife, but cut carpet it did. All this in addition to being an EDC knife for cutting open packages, lifting bottle caps, and tightening screws :)

And it even looked sexy while it was doing it.... ;)

I'd have to second that. GET A SAK SOLDIER. There are precious few knives that are tougher than the vic Alox models. The Alox are thin and compact as well. You could have one on you in addition to something else.

SAK blades out cut just about everything else when sharpened properly... the only downside is that they do get dull faster. (Note that the tip of the SAK can-opener is sized for phillips screws.) BUT any knife used as a prybar or screwdriver dulls almost instantly...

If you don't like the soldier, you're only out about 20.00.

I find the blades with a thicker, more rounded snout (sheepsfoot style) will take more unconventional abuse. Like the benchmade griptilian or Spyderco Salts. Benchmade make a griptilian in D2 don't they?

The spyderco Lum Tanto (I'm not sure if it's still available) has a very abusable tip while keeping a thin fine edge for cutting. I saw a mate who had one of the new Byrd knives with the same blade shape.

I'd get a Prybaby.

Most of us here carry more than a knife in our pyjammies. From what I've been reading over the last several years, BFers don't go out without 2 knives, a firestarter, a flashlight and as SAK. We all have room for a Prybaby.

On top of that, you get the choice of S30V or Titanium  Does Peter know his audience or what? ;)

Note to Cliff: Please get a Prybaby and stop hammering perfectly good knives into logs

Thing is, I only consistently remember to carry my knife, I sometimes even forget to bring my cell phone and I actually use it more often, so while extra tools are handy I won't always have them on hand. The prybabies do look cool though.

I see on Benchmade's site they call D2 Tool Steel, is D2 also able to put up with more abuse?

Actually, from what I understand - D2 is great for edge retention, but not so great for toughness (at least, I think that's the proper term). If your selection criteria for a knife is ability to pry and twist, I'd not consider a knife with D2 steel.

Ah, thanks. I guess that wouldn't be for me then.
