Good "cheap" knives?

byrd knives are well worth the money.. less than $50 on all models i believe. i own the crow and i'm extreemly satisfied.

I would definitely recommend a Victorinox if you don't already own one. You can buy a basic model for as little as $10 at Wal-Mart.

Benchmade Griptilians and MiniGriptilians also come in under the $100 mark. Very good tactical/utility knives. I recommend the modified sheepsfoot with the thumbhole in the blade.

Other good investments might include a good bird & trout knife, such as one by KaBar (unsure of cost). Clod Steel makes a good All Terrain Hunter if you want something a little bigger. Or there's always a machete - I'd recommend an Ontario 12" or 18" - get the sheath, but not the saw-back model.

Neck knives may be another good option. I'd recommend the CRKT Peck ($20-30). The versatile sheath and short length make it a feasile pocket-carry fixed blade as well. It's out of production, though, so it may be hard to find.

Also out of production, but a great knife, is my favorite, the Benchmade TK-1 Tether Knife (the MiniGriptilian may be my favorite - it's so hard to decide :D). It'll run you $55-70, but it is a very versatile knife for outdoor recreation or even pocket carry.

Welcome to the world of knife collecting!

Good 'n' cheap ones the Byrds, BM Pika, Buck Pilot, Camillus Cuda EDC - they're all great EDC folders for that little money! :)

The long standing "best value" knives probably are the Swiss Army Knife (SAK) - especially Victorinox - for example the humble, but extremely useful Waiter can be had for as low as about $10 -

Even the all-singing-dancing SwissChamp

can be found as low as about $48.....

The other value favorite is the Opinel - #8 is seems the most popular size -

as low as about $10.....

Kershaws are also very good value - for example the Vapor which is a Frame-Lock

- under $18 from a local WalMart -
there is also a larger version the Vapor II - at under $25......

Opinels! I forgot those. Very good knife for modding, I made mine a drop point in 2 minutes.

benchmade mini griptillian would be my knife of choice for under 75, and for about 25 bucks you can get a gerber ar3 at walmart, or a kershaw chive. yes, there are way better steels out there, but it is hard to be the price IMO.

spyderco endura wave is the finest knife for under 100 in my opinion or the ontario RAT-1 as far as fixed blades go the RAT-3 is and excellent choice for the money

Victorinox Knives = SAK's.. Douk Douk's, Opinels, Okapi, & Black Cat Mercater are all decent & inexpensive knives..IMHO. I prefer the Vic's, Douk Douk & the Okapi myself! They will cut about anything reasonable!

What pogo said, with feeling.

If you have not tried a Douk-Douk, then you owe it to yourself for a unreal cutting tool. Thin carbon steel that gets razor blade sharp. Very thin profile rides in the pocket very discreet, and rugged contruction.

Another recommendation for the Douk Douk. If you aren't afraid of tarnishing a carbon steel blade, the Douk is a fantastic cutter with a very stout backspring in a very easily pocketed package. I've been carrying a medium Douk for a couple weeks now, and am pretty impressed.

SAKs and Okapis are faves of mine, also. FWIW, Cold Steel is coming out with an Okapi-like locking folder with a list price of $8. I'll be picking one up when they hit the stores.

I've been thinking of getting Queen Big Chief series knife, but I can find little about them, and even fewer dealers of the diver/bail version.

those 5$ Tiger Knifes..plastic frame, stainless blade, hold up better than my friends 60$ smith & wesson.

Unsurprisingly, it seems the CS "Kudu" is just another folder made with inexpensive materials and crappy steel. Get an original Okapi.

Mercators tend to have only so-so fit and finish, and the blade grinds are pretty terrible. But it cuts like nothing I've ever seen, and is a good sturdy lock. If you prefer non-locking look at the Douk-Douk, I plan to grab one of those soon.

If you want to start out with some big cheap knives that you wont be afraid to modify, throw at trees and generaly severely use and abuse, try ebay. Ive picked up many bayonets from different countrys, modified them (mostly ground off that ring that the rifle muzzle goes through), kept some, gave some away. Military bayonets are a dime a dozen on fleabay. Toss in some low bids, if you miss them who cares. If you win, you have a very cheap knife to play with.:D

forget puma. i recently ordered 2 puma companions. 1 i returned as rivets on handle stuck out a few mm. and made grip uncomfortable. should have returned both as 1 i kept the blade edge was too thick (> 24 degrees) and ragged like a hacksaw. i am still working on re-profiling it to a functional edge, something i should not have to do on a knife that cost me nearly $200 cdn. after taxes added

fixed - Anza
folder Buck small 501 or large 110

no need to read another post

Puma was good in the 70s but has lowered its quality way down.

A great utility fixed-blade value is a Cold Steel SRK, but only in Carbon V steel. Not made anymore, if you can find a used one or factory 2nd you get a lot of hard-use knife for the $$.
