Good "cheap" knives?

I recommend Victorinox's OneHandTrekker,Trekker,or Centurion.Good knives, good price. All three will get the job done when needed.
In a fixed blade I dont think you would go wrong if you pick up a USMC KaBar or one from Ontario knives.

Hello, I just tried out the Entrek Javalina, a 4.5" long, 3/16" thick, Canvas micarta handle slabbed fixed blade. And for $91.00 shipped from Ebay to a APO it is a great value. I split wood, drilled holes with the tip, and batoned through numerous 4x4s. The blade held up with out edge rolling, chipping, or any kind of edge damage. I didn't try to destroy the knife, but used it as if I had to work through alot of wood. The canvas micarta didn't dent or crush after being hit with full swings to drive it through the 4x4 tip first. The sheath is a kydex affair that leaves a little to be desired, but holds the blade safely. I would shop around and could possibley get it cheaper, but it is a good knife for those dimensions.

Is it fair to say we're out of the "cheap knife" category?

for a bang around carry knife I've had nothing but good luck with S&W's HRT line.
I've had an HRT4 the magnesium handled folder since 2000 and it's great, 440c, keeps a GREAT edge, easy to sharpen, works well. They are under $50 now I think.

These have been mentioned, but here's another vote:

Spyderco
Victorinox

Both will serve you well.
:)

Lots of good inexpensive knives listed so far.

I'd also like to mention EKA from Sweeden. Check out Ragweed Froge for a great selection.

EKA Compact, $10.00!!!

I'll second that. Check out the Normark-92 or Swede-92. The Normark is on sale for 10.00 each as well IIRC. 1/8 inch thick, sharp as nuts. Decent steel. Very solid lockback.

It depends on the type and wanted usage. I myself want a good defensive ( I train in Penkak Silat) tool and an everyday here and there use. I own many knives and am very satisfied with the Colt Cobra II CT0134 $50.00. It is a Tanto style ( Which is my preference ) and has a strange laser etched seration which if figured would not hold up to stress but has done VERY well. IF you are looking for farm boy knives get an Old Timer. I don't know about the newer versions but the ones I had as a child were one in a million. They are very skinny and have a wide range of blade choices. If you want something Good but stylish ( Colors of grips and shit like that ) go with CRKT which stands for Columbia River Knife Company. I have a Camping/Hunting style Folder that is 5" and is deemed the "Ryan" model it also has a lock for the blade release for those deep bone cuts $60.00. Best damn long lasting knife I have. Anyway just look around and recognize quality from crap. Most of the time you get what you pay for. I say save up and get the Tom Brown tracker $300.00 from TOPS. It's the best overall knife in existance ....So they say. Spyderco( i've had handles crack off and break but they are very good and I am very hard on knives), Kershaw I have a very cheap 20.00 knife I got from sports authority that is tanto and the handle is aircraft aluminum so it's real light and actually throws quite well. start looking for what other people like you carry. most of the time it'll be Spyderco or something you've heard of. well have fun.

Nods to the Camillus Heat, as posted above. It is a great knife at a great price, and won't be around much longer. And as already posted above, you cannot go wrong with a Spydie or Victorinox. I also think that Greco knives and Mt. Sequoyah knives are great bargains.

the camillus robo assisted series are super for their price.. the heat, blaze or sizzler. gettem while you still can.

I love the few Case knives I have. Granted they are for light use - but for a VERY nice looking pocket knife that does what I need it to - I can't argue with a Case.

KaBar - Dozier folders
[/QUOTE

I agree. I bought a KA-BAR Dozier model 4062 a few months ago for just eighteen dollars at my favorite local knife shop, Gilbert's Cutlery on West HWY 27, a few miles west of Lincolnton, NC. (Anyone wanting better directions, let me know.) The 4062 is made in Taiwan, has a three inch AUS 8 stainless steel blade, is a lock back, and has a thumb stud and a pocket clip (tip up only) that can both be set up for right or left hand if you have a torx set. I don't know how you could buy a better new knife for the price. It is a great "use, abuse, don't mind if you lose" EDC, for just 18 dollars!
I'm also thinking about buying a KA-BAR Mule. Any comments on them would be appreciated.
