Good "cheap" knives?

I'm just a neophyte here, and have thrown for a few years with alot of different knives but I have had great response from friends and family on my choice of "cheap" throwers that I use to teach them. and not having the time to read all of the postings, let me say that the Rigid RG 58/56 throwers are both cheap and durable to a fault. I picked up a 3 pack of rangers for $18.99 pluss shipping and handling. here is the link if you want.

There are a lot of good bang for your buck knives! have saying this i had a Spyderco with Aus8 steel pretty good steel was a lil soft but a great knife. i also had a Benchmade Griptillian555 and it was the best knife i have had they were both about $70. I just bought a CRKT bout 3 weeks ago and it seems to be a bit better than my Spyderco and just as good as my Benchmade!!! The CRKT is $20 at Walmart its the m16 10k Zytel!

For the very frugal, an Opinel folder (~$13.99) is a good one.

I just bought a ka bar dozier folder. It's a fairly good knife for the money. I don't think it can be beat for the money at about 20 dollars. Other than maybe some sort of SAK. That's a personal preference though.

With the purchase of the dozier folder I've started looking at the ka bar mule as well, but I'm not sure how good of a knife it actually is. It looks like it could take a beating though. It could be found for around 40-50.

Again, I'll sugest griptillians made by benchmade at around the 60-70 dollar mark. You could also get a ritter mini grip for a little over 100 dollars and it's a very high quality knife.

Other than that, I'd say spyderco. They're known to be sharp and stay that way. Models I'd suggest would be the Native, Delica, and if you want something a little bigger I'd go with the endura. They're all within 30-50 dollars.

Then as a last resort (but still great quality)...I'd suggest camillus heat, camillus cuda edc (my favorite out of these), buck 110, or the kershaw vapor I/II.

The kershaw can be bought at wal-mart and surely you have one of those near you. I think the buck 110 can be too. They used to carry the spyderco native too, but my walmart just discontinued them. When the guy scanned it, it tells whether or not it's going to be restocked and instead of saying "current" or whatever it said "recall". So, maybe this batch got recalled because of something being wrong with them or maybe wal-mart isn't going to sell them anymore. Who knows.

Well I own quite a few "cheap" knives as in under $100

Sog trident - 60 or so on ebay
Spyderco Endura4 (ZDP-189) - 75 on ebay
CRKT M16 - 55-60 on ebay
Kershaw Blur tanto - 40-50 on ebay

Basically under $100 you can find tons if you look on ebay
Also Cabellas D2 griptillian is 95 shipped PE or SE, Black or Olive

Cold steel recon1 and gunsites are around 45-55 on ebay

Thanks for all of the info fellas. I posted this a long time ago and have purchased about 25 knives since then. Thanks for the suggestions.

Above post mentioned Schrade Old Timer knives. The older carbon steel knives couldn't be beat for the price. The NEW ones are not the same knife, they're made of an "un-named" stainless. Haven't seen one but buyer beware.

wonderful, i just purchased one of those new ones. :grumpy:

where could i get one of the old-school ones?

In the 'a deal' column, that Spyderco Native from Wally World - in S30V steel - for $40 - was a winner. A beautiful, but dated design - and huge - is the Buck 110 lockback, available in basic form for $30-$35 - even at Wally World. Want S30V? Cabela's has a special - made for them - in S30V with a black 'Ti-Al-N' coating - the 'Alaskan Guide 110' - $65. Even the holster is nicer than usual. Mine has a home.

Now, in a traditional fixed blade, the Buck 119 is a $35 bargain - again, even at Wally World. A prettier version exists - the 119BR, like the one I received from an evil-Bay bid today. A big wow - rosewood in place of the black phenolic handle, and brass finger guard and pommel, in place of Al. Expect $75+. Now, for a good old favorite, a KaBar USMC knife - like the one my Dad had in WWII in the S. Pacific (USCG) - can still be had from the original company - $50-$70. Interesting piece of history - that is also a great knife.

Another modern pair would be the Kershaw Blur in S30V ($75-$85) and the Buck 'Alaskan Guide Vanguard' in S30V - $95. All of these examples were made in the USA, oddly enough. I have several Blurs, just not the S30V - yet. I have all of the others... my grandkids will get them one day.

Since Schrade went out of business in 2004, it's nearly impossible to find the originals in stores. The guniune Old Timer knives are common on eBay, but so are the modern imported reproductions. So a couple of things to keep in mind:
* Some sellers are less than open regarding their knives' origins. So you'll need to be able to distinguish the imports from the originals.
* Before going under, Schrade themselves gradually changed the Old Timer lineup from carbon steel to stainless. To ensure you're buying a carbon steel blade, look for knives intact in the older packaging styles.

Whoever said Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara......Ditto on that. Big bang for the buck nonpareil. Meets and maybe exceeds the title of the thread "Good 'cheap' knife.
