Recommendation? Good first Busse for camp/outdoors tasks?

...
As I've been perusing models (and threads), I've been homing in on the BG ASH-1, which often gets mentioned specifically as an all-rounder -- maybe not the best chopper, or the best small-chores knife, but flexible enough to do both. And it has the look that drew me to start looking at Busses in the first place; it makes my heart sing in a way some do not. :D
Don't rule out the CG ASH-1 - at .32" thick it has some decent weight for chopping, and yet is a fairly compact package.

The CG is made with INFI, so there is very little concern about rust. In my experience, even with a satin finish and no care (other than wiping it off), INFI does not rust easily at all - it is very close to being stainless.

I would also recommend the Basic 9 (B9), B10 or B11. The handles are superb - very comfortable due to both the shape and res-c material. Just FYI, the B9 blade length is almost 10". The Basics are a great value!

Edit: As much as I love the ASH-1, if I HAD to choose just one of the those I mentioned above, it would probably be the B11, or maybe the B9. :)

...Get that BG ASH1 and go from there.

I agree. That feeling is what you’re looking for; what we’re all looking for.

Along with your folder, may I suggest you consider eventually adding a B11? In my opinion those three blades will cover anything a knife might be called upon to do. Anything larger that requires processing is likely best addressed with a saw— bow saw, then chainsaw as you go up in size.

The basic 10 L.E Choiless is great for a longer light knife option. I personally love mine.

My the end of this thread, you do realize we will all is nd up naming just about every model as a “great option” lol
......and you will end up with a bunch of them anyway, so just go with your gut on the first one and then do it again....and again.....and again......and again.........

This has made me chuckle a few times already! :D But then I also think, 1) this thread, where a noob asks a pretty pedestrian question, is up to five pages of quality recommendations and feedback, 2) not only is there zero noob-shaming, I feel incredibly welcome here and everyone has been generous with their knowledge, and 3) my general use-case is broadly met by something like 20 different Busses and kin. These are all excellent things!

I am within spitting distance of going with a Steel Heart Ergo (gen 2). It seems like a phenomenal all-rounder, it's INFI, and the handle hits a lot of high notes for me when I compare it to other knives I own/have owned.

The SHE2 is definitely a good one. I had one that I got in a blind grab bag and I loved everything about except the handle color. Even then it hurt a little bit when I boxed it up to send her to a new home.

SHe2 would be fine as well as 364,986 other Bussekin choices. I have an SHe1 and it’s a good one. Might as well go INFI for your first ‘kin experience.

Newbe’s? We were all there once. Soon your friends will marvel at your grasp of the Busse nomenclature. But be prepared to have folk’s eyes glaze over as they look for an exit from your newfound obsession’s babbling. And be sure to post an image of your first one here.

Decent looking NMFSH, sheath, on Exchange right now for a great price. Check it out. I might have snatched it, but already have one. The more you get the less you need.

Nice helpful post xxwarderxx. I really like my SARSquatch, but those don’t come up for sale like they did three years ago. One came up here not long ago, for a great price, and sold nearly immediately. I would have bought it just because they are so rare.

I went with the SHE2, and I will for sure share photos when it arrives!

Thank you again to everyone who contributed to this thread, and special thanks to Apocryphiliac Apocryphiliac for giving me an excellent price on this knife. You rock! :D Much appreciated on all counts!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
Honored to help a piglet get that first taste of bacon! Hope it serves you well! :D:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

A win-win. That’s a substantial knife—nice flat/saber grind, full 1/4” thickness plus proven ergos and you just can’t beat INFI. (Although you CAN and SHOULD beat ON it.)

Arguably among the best possible matches for your application set as originally stated. Congrats!

Great choice for a first!
FYI, The .25 thick SHe2 were some of the last offerings with INFI dimples found under the coating. Most of the thinner .22 blanks since then have the dimples machined off from the original .25 stock to look like the new C.F. ;)

Mine is a clip point variant (.22 thick from the grab bags..). IT IS AWESOME!

Your photo, which I came across looking for examples of SHEs and different blade/handle color combos, was what ultimately sold me on how great that color combo is going to be. :)

I read a thread about that while doing my homework, but didn't know that the .25 blades became .22 blades with prettier surfaces down the road. I assume the dimples are more of an aesthetic concern, and if so they won't bother me. I sought out a coated blade and have no plans to strip it.
