Good first knife for a girlfriend?

I gave my wife a Kershaw Leek. She didn't like the assisted opening feature. She borrowed my Victorinox Alox Electrician and never returned it. That's her knife now. The Leek is in my knife drawer now.

I've discovered that significant others are quite capable of picking out their own gear, or deciding whether or not they are even interested in a particular type of gear at all.

It's always hard to figure out what someone else will like without them trying it. I got my girlfriend a delica and she liked it. I had a mini griptilian in a drawer and she started using that all the time and it eventually bumped the delica out of her purse. I brought home a dragonfly in ZDP189 for myself one day. She really liked the thought of that one, used it once or twice and went right back to the mini grip. I guess I need to get myself another one now because she has claimed it...

I also gave my wife a leek in her favorite color.
She uses it regularly, loves it's "sliciness" and how "stabby it looks", and it has become a staple in her purse.
(A little thin of a blade for any hard use though, other then slicing/cutting).

A dragonfly tattoo for Chicago business trips where her corporate hq are located. She loves the look of it, but feels it is just too small for her. She's also 5'9" barefooted though, and grew up around guns and race cars.
Outside of Chicago trips she only carries it occasionally.

An ESEE Avispa in her favorite color for camping which she loves, but is a little too big for her liking for regular daily carry.
*( in hindsight the zancudo in her favorite color would've likely been the perfect balance for her; tough, solid company, cool logo, not too big or small, simple design, easy to get really sharp aus8, and super affordable. Solid first knife option).

I also got her a buck metro in her favorite color, and a few different SAK classics for her keychain, she keeps the metro and the "love song" classic LE for sentimentality on her main set.
She prefers the Buck but she also drinks fruity cider ales and soda flavored beers which often need a bottle opener, so if your girl likes beers, something to consider. But, the SAK is otherwise a much more useful/versatile all around tool in general.

So yeah, I'd say get her a ESEE zancudo or Kershaw leek in her favorite color, (or both, an assisted + a nonassisted, which combined won't break the bank in their basic models )
And a SAK classic in a color/pattern she'll love for her key chain.
Can have all 3, all decent quality budget friendly options, for right around $100 usd.

The size of the knife should be directly related to her temper, propensity to violence and your pain tolerance.
To be on the safe side, i would recommend this.

My wife found an old Gerber Gator of mine and started carrying it in her small pocketbook (in the big Velcro sheath). She is very small but likes the knife. After a while I gave her my old dragonfly thinking she might like it better and leave the huge lock back at home. Now she carries both!

Benchmade mini griptilian is an awesome beginner knife and it is fairly easy to sharpen if you get the one with 154cm blade also it comes in pink if she likes pink.

I agree with others who said to let her pick her own if possible.

My girls got Dragonflys in middle school and Delicas in high school. They enjoyed picking a color.

My wife stole my Delica G10 as soon as I got it.

my wife loves her pink mini griptilian with spydie hole. i'm glad they don't make more knives in pink because she'd want all of them and be worse than me.

Once, I bought my girlfriend a Benchmade Megumi. Pretty knife, but a bit impractical for her uses. That knife hasn't seen the light of day for years.

A year or two later I bought a Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight for myself. Once I let her use it, she never gave it back. She uses that Native 3-5 days a week. It's hers now, of course.

I bought my wife one of the dealer exclusive pink Ladybugs and it's the first knife she's actually carried every day. It rides on her keys.

Funny, just today she texted me all excited because she needed a knife for something at work and remembered she had the LB with her.

Might as well get her something ridiculously expensive so she knows what she is in for with your obsession. Then when you're buying $800 ____'s she can't say anything because she has one too.

I don't get it. She already expressed a preference for the Kershaw and the SAK. Why are we even discussing this?

You want to get her something she likes.
She told you what she likes.
Get it.
Case closed.
