Good first knife for a girlfriend?

Woah woah why does the knife have to be purple if it's for a woman?!

Lol.
Hey, I have a purple Dragonfly and I love it...

And why's it have to be small?

I also have a SuperBlue Manbug, lol

Spyderco offers a color and size for anyone. They're like T-shirts at Wal-Mart!

lol I just find it funny how products are so gender specific nowadays. Like how Bic came out with the pen "just for her!" Because we all know women can only use pink/purple colored pens...hahaha.

So naturally when I saw a comment that brought up a knife and then a "feminine" color because the OP mentioned it was for his old lady I couldn't resist.

Don't tell that to my wife...she wears more black and red than me. Swings a sword and shoots better too, lol.

I know what you mean, though. I think the worst thing we can do for our kids is to teach them that there's a spectrum of the color wheel "just for them".

My wife liked my small Sebenza Insingo, but gave it up because she could not disengage the lock.

Miso

I would never give my girlfriend a Military, in fear that one day I'd make her so angry she may try to use her knife on me, haha.

The size of the knife should be directly related to her temper, propensity to violence and your pain tolerance.
To be on the safe side, i would recommend this.

You know she's seriously considered stabbing her ex.....

I'm thinking of grabbing her an SAK next time I go to the knife store

Leatherman style cs is a nice keychain option too, I keep one on my car keys.
Like a SAK classic minus the toothpick, but plus a bottle opener.

The key word here is "you" aka "the knife knut". Find a knife that is priced higher than any other knife you own and that you like, want, can afford, etc. and buy a pair as your "couples knives." This gets a new special knife for you. Buy this new knife with the same specs you would use for your own knife.

The correct answer is, as always, Smatchet. :D

More seriously though, if you want to surprise her (instead of taking her to pick out her own in a shop) I say to stick with what she's already picked: the Kershaw and the SAK. Personally, I'd go with the SAK for a first knife for a non-knife person since it's about as utilitarian and socially accepted as a knife can get. Unless there is some other tool that you know for certain she'd find invaluable in her day to day life, stick with the exact same model.

Once she's comfortable using it (especially around other people, keep in mind that not everyone views knives as tools and is comfortable around them like those of us here, unfortunately) you can supplement it with the Kershaw she likes for a later gift. Perhaps even with custom scales in whatever her favorite color is to make it even more special.

When your lady tells you what she likes you'll always get the best results by doing that. Exactly that. Remember that well. It works for gifting her knives too. :D

She just broke up with me cause we can't see each other enough. On the bright side she said when I get back we'll start up again so... Long distance relationships don't work I guess. :)

She broke up because you can't see each other enough? My significant other used to be out to sea for months at a time on his job and then was deployed for two years. I never dreamed of breaking up with him. On the other hand, if you're willing to start things up again when you return and she is, too, and you're both happy with that, then more power to you.

I'm late to this party but I was going to say a Busse Team Gemini Satin would be nice as a first knife. Of course, that's just me and my "go big or go home" knife nuttiness and snark coming through, plus I'm already a knife nut, so I'm not qualified to speak for girls new to the knife world. Maybe a cute folder with abalone inlaid slabs? Cost of said knife should be proportionate to the expected duration of the relationship, maybe? Bonus points for how happy she makes you and if she's not a bitch 95% of the time. The "couples knives" suggestion was awesome, too.

I know people ask questions like, why does it have to be (pink, small, pretty, et al)?

I can't speak for ithers, but my Misses has two knives that She picked out.
A Hot pink Spyderco Ladybug and the Same Color Svord Mini Peasant.

She carries the Ladybug in her RFP with a Hot pink fob/lanyard. Most women's pockets are (Very) small, and my Misses is only 4'9'' so that exacerbates the issues caused by larger knives.

Her Ladybug with a Chinese button knot fits her hand and her method of carry perfectly.

My girl rode out 3 county bids with me and bailed me out of a 4th, (long story(s)), and that's a big reason behind why she finally got herself the ring she wanted, after a handful of knives she may or may not have.

Just saying, maybe you should just buy yourself a new knife and find yourself a new GF?

Hey guys I was wondering what would be a good first knife for my girlfriend. She isn't a knife nut, but she's OK with the fact I'm obsessed with them. She's been looking at some of my knives and she likes the Kershaw I have and a SAK Fisherman I have. I've been thinking about getting her a Kershaw or maybe a Byrd Cara Cara 2. She's kinda tough on her tools so I want to get her something she can beat on, that is easy to sharpen. What are your guys thoughts?

This very pretty Spyderco Pink Native was just listed on the sales exchange. I personally love the blade design, along with the excellent grips of these handles- I think your girlfriend would love this! :)
