Good knife for a Biker?

In that case definitely this:

Edit: don't forget the "If you can read this the b*!#% fell off the back" t-shirt

I would think a loud open-assist would work best for a SD knife. There is nothing that matches the "snickt" of an AO like the Kershaw Leek or SOG Twitch (any of the 3, they are equally loud).

Having owned scores of knives and riding (big cruisers) for the last couple years, I can tell you there is such a thing as too much knife, be it a folder or a fixed blade. My two favorite fixed blades are a RAT4 in the nice leather drop down sheath (carried right front hip) or a Cold Steel Kubon carried back left hip.

For a folder, the max comfortable size is more about two things...how deep are the pockets (if a smaller guy, stick with 4in closed OAL tops) and how wide is the handle. I am 5'9 and have carried a SOG Spec Elite II and a DDR HTM Maxx 5.5, but you need deep pockets. Width-wise, even a ZT0200 can be too much. You want something that lays flat and narrow for when you're seated so it doesn't make your pants any tighter (if you've ridden in jeans you know some room for your "boys" is of high value :)). Also, I've found that any of the wider Spyderco designs don't work that well either.

My advice on a folder would be something like a Kershaw Blur and a Cold Steel Kubon or a RAT3 for a fixed blade. None of which are super pricy.

DDR HTM Madd Maxx

I comes in three sizes: 3, 4 and 5.5 inches.
The auto assist version is quite intimidating

Edit: oops, didn't see the price range. Nevermind, sorry :o

I am a "biker" and I carry a Spyderco Gayle Bradley. Love it!

When in Sturgis I add a Kimber Ultra Cdp, + Sig .380 on my ankle.

I saw more gangs than ever this year..most of the biker gang members I saw were all sporting large fixed blades.
5-6 inch blades are pretty standard for those guys. I saw one of the Mongols get pulled over this year on main street.
I was standing right there where he got pulled over. The first question the cop asked was" do you have any weapons?"
The Mongol responded " I have a knife in my vest" he opened his vest slowly and the cop removed a 6 inch fixed that was sewn into is vest under his left armpit.

ZT 0350 (lower) fast, fun and built like a Tank for around 120ish or the Emerson CQC-14 (top) which has a sub 3 inch blade so it's legal most places - couldnt hurt a biker to be within the law in case being hassled by the man, it's probably going to run a little more than 150 though for the Emerson.

I'd have to go with the Buck 110. It's a classic sturdy tried and true american legend. Perfect for a biker knife. Actually probably the original biker knife.

Cold Steel 6inch aluminium Ti-Lite. A lot of knife for the money, sturdy and that easyrider type styling.

Or if you've got the time, get whatever fixed blade and get someone to make a leather scout carry sheath.

smatchette ...

image is everything

u have to take alot of time and care in how you dress to show the world your over 40 and dont care at all about how you dress

I need a good all around knife for a biker that would be used as self defense and utility? Could be a small fixed blade or a sturdy folder? price from about 100-150

Every Biker needs a Buck 110 on his belt. Myself, I'd pack a Rajah 2 from Cold Steel - it leaves a lasting impression! :D

Buck custom shop 110.You can pick between blade, handle, and bolster materials. The custom shop does an outstanding job.

2.
Informal . a member of a motorcycle gang.

i mean a motorcycle alright

I asked the question for a reason (not to be a smart alec). Unfortunately your response does not help me much. In the world of motorized bikes, there are many sorts (European touring bikes, Asian sport bikes, American classics, and Customs...just to name a few) and as you might imagine, there are even more personality types of "bikers" that might be riding these. One of your criteria was to find something that looks cool, and I think there could be a lot of different definitions of "cool". I hoped to gain some insight so that I might be more able to help you with a thought out suggestion;)

As a blanket suggestion that would work for any biker for the uses you mentioned, I might suggest the serrated Spyderco Tasman Salt. I have no idea if he will think that suggestion is 'cool" but it is a great knife that will require very little in the way of maintenance should it get exposed to elements for long periods (in case he is a commuter, or hardcore tourer). It is available in a nice flashy color in case he enjoys flamboyance and bright color schemes. H1 alloy is a very tough steel so it should hold up reasonably well as a utility knife. And the knife is reasonably sized so it should stow easily and comfortably.

That would probably not be my FIRST suggestion for many of the bikers I know...but I know a little bit about them, and I do not know much about your brother.

Buck 110 has always been a standard for bikers. Its secure to the belt in a pouch reducing the chance of a loss, roads can be pretty bumpy and stuff can slip out. The black sheath of the 110 compliments most biker's dress.
