got my steel in today and started working on my FIRTS KNIFE!!!!!

im a new guy to this on a limited budget. not to mention im not setup for stainless steels. im using a gas forge. im only using 1080.got about 24' of it left. just so you know as we speak im 30 mins into the first temper cycle. while its tempering im cleaning my yard. i need to have it cleaned up good by the time my neighbor comes home to setup his wifes bday party hes having tomorrow.

the bug wont leave me alone!!!!!! i need to finish picking up my yard but i came in for a break and started sketching out more blades. 5 more to be exact. i already have one cut out and rough profiled on the bench grinder. about 10 more minutes left on the second cycle of tempering. after i post pics of the finished first knife ill post some of this second knife im working on. its a bigger blade using the proportions that stacy gave me. well close enough. so there is no cure for this bug is there? HEHEHEHE!!!! ill probably be taking my belt grinder and the rest of my belts with me when i goto moms house on monday.

If you stayed out of here for more then 1/2 hour you might get some work done on knives and start learning reading stuff on here will help but most of it you learn bye practice

If you soak your scaley blade in vinegar it will come off easier. It can also show where the hamon or transition line will be between the harder steel and softer steel if you are edge quenching. is there a gap between your platen and belt on your grinder? My 1x30 had a gap and would break belts til i found out i needed to adjust the platen to just push on the belt.

But Sam, he can't build up his thread count that way. He's got 820 questions/comments/how to's. The reason I'm still following along here is I like all of the suggestions from the members. Say, I heard:p Sparky is going to reset everyone's count back to "0" in a day or to

ok its finally finished. i used the red 1/8" linen micarta for the scales. finished to 400 grit. no buffing. the whole knife turned out ok but im sure the next one will be better. heres the pics:

Whoo, Another computer geek with an open box, Intel or AMD?.
Nice first knife, I like it. Theres some shots of my first around the forum somewhere.

You gents can say what you want about PimpinSquee, and there's alot to say  But there's no "quit" in him.

Keep it up Bud, and put a guard on the next one for goodness sake. :D

Most important, how's it sharpen up and cut?!?

shaves my arm!!!!! the next one wont have a guard either. but it isnt a straight spine either. ill post it once its done. you cant even tell that there was scale on that knife. i might break out the buffer tomorrow and give it some shine. not sure yet. you cant see it in the pics but i did make a few goofs. cant wait to slap the green canvas micarta on this next one.

actually that desktop has been in pieces for about 6 months now. its got an amd athlon 900 in it. im selling that mobo with proc, 640MB RAM, and heatsink/fan. im also selling the other guts from it. even a TV card with remote. that comp is about 5 years old now.

Heres my first. made from a leaf spring, annealed, forged, and hardend in a wood fire, quenched in used oil from the chip cooker and tempered in the oven ground on a hand belt sander meant for use on floors and furniture, with a handle of firewood, pins of fencing wire and a brass bolster just to stop chips in the end of the handle :)

Yours stacks up better than mine :) the pins are off after all. ;)

i didnt even measure out the placement of the pins. i eyeballed them and then later too the calipers to them and was only off by about .002-.005". i think it was purely luck. im going to be cooped up in the house at times tomorrow cause of the weather so i cant do much work on my other knife.

Sorry I didn't call you back last night. I was trying to finish up one of my new knives.

Looks good man. Nice skinner. Now that you have the fever, keep with it and try new things.

dont worry i will. sometimes i just sit there and do a rouch sketch and as im doing it i change it and stuff. i almost feel like the steel is speaking to me. you think ive been staring at the sun too long? HEHEHEEHHEHEHE!!!

You probably have been out in the sun too long, but I "listen" to the steel too.
Lots of times, things come out different than you planned, you gotta go with the flow along the way. It's the same writing a song or making a knife.

Well I guess I've got to agree Gibson. Congrats on your first Blade Squee  ;)

thanks david. well i finally picked up a respirator and an extra set of filters. i tested it out and it is just a little hard to breath thru but it should work good. if i can find 3m filters taht fit it then ill be in good hands then. heck the mask was only $24 and the filters were $10.59. its made by MSA. had mom pick me up the craftsman 2x42 from sears. gonna get it monday or even tomorrow. about to order some more belts but im gonng order 2x42 belts now. cant wait to break it in starting on my next knife. ive been bitten so hard by the bug its not even funny. man this is fun.

Nice job man! i think if you grind away 90% of the steel the draw file your bevels to get everything nice and flat it would really step your knives up a notch!

keep'er up :)
