from Ragnar's.

Check out his "cobbler's" blade.

$8, nice edge, long handle, great if you want to mess around with a light weight home-crafting project. About...er...3.5 inch blade. Suppose you could just wrap the handle with paracord, but I want to make a mess. :)

I hadn't seen them before.

Kismet? Are you gonna try to drill holes for pins in that one? I've been looking at them nice blade shape:thumbup:

Thats a pretty cool project. Since its undrilled, you can reshape that tang with a little curve, and drill the holes centered to the new profile. If the tang is hard to drill, go out to Home Despot, and get some carbide tipped concrete bits. Go slow. It doesn't matter if the pin is smaller than the hole in the tang. Just that it is the right size for the hole in the scales.

I think he had a "shoemaker's knife" with what looked more like a tape-wrapped handle. In any case, they dress them lightly. :)

It would look much better with real handle slabs.

Esav? The "shoemaker's" version is $14 and looks as if it were dipped in some slip latex. The stuff would have to be peeled off to make a real tool, I think. Same blade though.

HD? dunno what I'm gonna do. Mess with it, I'd guess.

Andy? Thanks for the carbide tip. I might just grind it down and make a hidden tang.

Three of them, plus shipping is only $30. Hard to beat. With NO modification, it might appeal to the tooth-brush stub backpackers. :D

Gotta luv R's.

OK, HD...

messed with one last night. Ground down for hidden tang, shortened handle, found some pieces of antler, and er...smushed a 7.62x54r brass in a vise, and took out the JB weld.

With the help of my faithful single wheel grinder, a fiber disc, and the Harbor freight 1x30 belt sander....

taa daa!!!

Made a mess. !!!! :)

I'll tidy it up a bit, and gawd knows I'm no craftsman, but was fun. Nice edge.

(You can see JB weld gaps and the split in the cartridge brass.:) )

Two pieces of antler...one bit of very old (wish I had more), and one newer bit of curved that I had left after sending Yangdu what I had some time ago.

Blade isn't thick, but very sharp. Typical Ragnar razor edge. Fun.

final fiddle, probably.

Before and after:

Some of the knifemakers out there should play with this...run a thread on their variations. :)

Edit: Ya know...with some simple tough sheath on the blade, might make a great spear head for a walking stick. Hacksaw a slot, slip in the blade, pin it through, and lace up the slot. Some VERY safe cover for the blade that would slip off quickly in need, and you just created some distance between you and a threat. Dunno)

Hey!! That looks great Kismet! Really came out well!

Kismet,

Looks good. I ordered 3 of them from Ragnar. I'm gonna try to drill the tang and put scales on them:thumbup:

The shape is similar to the Skookum and I really love the thinness.

Hollow d,
If you have access to a drill press, turn it down to about 400rmp and use a sharp bit with a cutting fluid or paste. Shouldn't have any trouble getting a hole in it that way. Do you have scale material ?? I think some micarta would look great on those...

HD, in lieu of pins, consider the "rustic" look of taking spent shells--a .22 mag and a .22 long rifle, grinding down the mag casing to length, and tapping the .22 long in the mag shell.

Then, of course, there's the widely-heralded technique of using the top of an old spoon for a hilt. :)

Have fun.

"HEDLEY!!! It's HEDLEY !!!"

I got 3 yesterday. They are really nice blades. Almost SURGICALLY sharp:eek:

The handle part is super long. Way longer than my Charlie May or Shing of approx the same size blade.

I'm thinking of doing one with the full length handle and then trying to grind one off to about where the lanyard starts and rounding it off. I have a carbide bit that will work for Loveless screws and the steel is not super thick so that part shouldn't be a problem:thumbup:

I'm really impressed. 8 bucks???
