Great Eastern Cutlery: #66 - Equal End Serpentine

I've got an Ebony and an Antique Autumn and my experience is the same as yours on both knives. Like you said, the secondaries aren't weak enough to be a problem but they are a little on the weak side.

I should have a Canvas Micarta in my mailbox when I get home. I'll be surprised if it's not the same way.

That's interesting and a little disappointing. The 66 stockman I had from a few years back had a good 5-6 pull on the secondaries. Sounds like they're setting them up lighter. I do have a Maverick that has light secondary pulls like you guys are describing. I'm curious to see if the whole run will be this way.

I'll post an update on the springs when I inspect my incoming Canvas Micarta. I should have it in my hands in less than two hours if the postman isn't late.

I'll let you guys know soon.

Is it just me or is the Hemlock green not really green at all, but looks to be brown instead? At least I assume that's the Hemlock Green with the federal shield. Not that I'm bothered at all. I prefer the brown. Or is that the blood red jigged bone?

I was asking the same question over in the "Let's Talk GEC" thread yesterday. It's a color they've run before, and it isn't really green at all. I like it a lot. Check the last couple pages of the other thread - there are some helpful photos.

According to the gentleman who is hosting the Blood Red Bone SFO, he told me the knife will have the Un-X-LD shield on it. So I think you are seeing the Hemlock Green in the pics.

Thanks Dylan. That's great news to me. I had not heard yet which shield the Blood Red would have and I'm a big fan of the UN-X-LD shield.

Just got an invoice for my smooth autumn gold bone. Check your email :)

I cancelled my order. I ordered autumn gold not brown and gold.
Edit: I went ahead and honored my pre-order.

I called GEC as I was curious also. I was told that it is indeed the Hemlock.

The springs should be a little weaker on the secondaries because of the lack of mechanical advantage with the shorter blades. But of course, everyone's expectations are a little different. A good cleaning might possibly improve the snap a little.

Good points Jeff. I haven't cleaned or lubricated any of mine yet so that may very well be the culprit. Out of the tube my Canvas Micarta is a little stiffer on the spey blade but the sheepsfoot is the same as my other two 66's from this run.

I got in an Antique Autumn and OD Green micarta. There is no walk and talk on the AA spey blade. Won't close without being pushed the whole way down. The sheepsfoot is an iota better. I called GEC and am sending it in to be fixed. Great customer service! "Send it in. We'll get it fixed for you"

The OD green is much better. The secondary spring is a weaker than the main, but the blades snap open and closed. I don't think I would want any more pull on the small blades and get a finger caught under one.

Thanks for the feedback. All three of my examples are more like the bold text. Not really a problem, just weaker than expected.

My Autumn Jigged Tidioute just came in the mail, and I think I'm in love. Just one question. Has anyone else found the secondary spring to be a little weak? The clip blade has great WT, but the other two are pretty light. Not necessarily a problem, but lighter than I expected. Thanks.

My first of this run is still in the mail, but I had a couple older ones that were as you described. I actually prefer that for a stockman. It makes it easier to avoid rubs.

Got my first today. These are smaller than I generally like, but, very nice little knife. . This is my first three bladed traditional, really interesting how the blades are bent and ground to fit. This is also my first GEC to come with some sort of edge, I took a strop to it and it is ready to go to work. Overall very happy with it and looking forward to the other two I have on the way. A couple of pics with the 66s close cousins

This run is shaping up to be rather spectacular. A great variety of covers and shields, a versatile pattern, and an iconic blade selection are all makings for quite the impressive production. I usually have a hard time justifying the purchase of more than one example but this run is proving hard to resist. However, I must stay resolute. Once I get my Blood Red that is on reserve, I will see if it is as awesome in hand as they look. If I really enjoy it and there are any left over going into the next month, I might scoop up another one, especially if a Hemlock is still available. I really like how that appears to have turned out, especially with that federal shield.

I agree totally, this run is looking fantastic. I broke down and got an Ironwood yesterday. Two on order including the Hemlock Northfield which just looks amazing, and if the dye job comes out well, those blue camel bone knives are going to be hard to resist.
