Great Eastern Cutlery Availability, Dealers, "Drops", Etc.: A Place for People to Vent

Actually there is some confusion Here as to what I “do”

I don’t give infractions or do real mod stuff, that’s supermod realm
I would lock a thread if it got out of control, until the grown ups got there..
I could move a post to help out the supers, they are the ones who volunteer their time to run BF

my opinions are my own over here in the GBU
They don’t reflect BF policy
If I break the rules I’ll get spanked like anyone else...

Yes.
"Moderators" moderate a specific forum. If I remember correctly they have the ability to shut down a thread or issue a warning outside "their" forum, but for the most part, if they are posting outside "their" forum, they are posting as members.

"Super Moderators" have responsibility across all the forums on BF, though we try to stay out of the various knife maker forums and Manufacturer forums.

I typically don't bother with GEC drops. I don't have the wherewithal for them; I'm too cheap to pay a premium and I'm too lazy to engage in the lolly scramble. But Great Googly Moogly! Out of curiousity I looked up some of the barlows. There's a couple of #77s on the 'Bay being sold for over $600 each. A few #14s are on sale for the bargain price of just a little under $300. And there is a used #15 going for $350. Are people really paying these prices? You can get Case/Bose knives for the same money. You can even get some customs.

Madness. Rank madness.

That stag 77 is stunning,
No idea it's true value.
I have seen people drop that on a bottle of wine at a restaurant though,
That always seemed nutty to me...

Money has different value for different people. Guy working like a dog for 10 bucks an hour vs another guy billing at 250 an hour.
$600 is pocket change for some folks. That's who those ebayers are hoping to catch.

I bought a couple of 77’s last year in the $200-250 range.
I’ve never seen them go for $600 though. I think that is what we call a dreamer.

If anyone is looking for a 93 Cocobolo- a well known dealer just listed 19 of them on eBay.

My comment isn't about the money or its amount, but rather what the money is being spent on. I truly don't understand the collector's mentality. It seems that with collectors rational basis goes right out the window when it comes to a "gotta have it."

So your opinion is that those 77s were overpriced at any price and that nobody should want to buy them at all?

It's not that. It's just that I'm boggled by the whole thing. GEC makes a very nice knife. But the demand for some of them defies rational explanation. These are recent releases, yet they command prices that are normally associated with knives made decades ago. They are more highly sought after than the Case/Bose annual collaborations despite the fact that the Case/Bose use better materials and exhibit a higher level of craftsmanship.

Desire is a powerful motivator. It's crazy how desirable some of these GECs have become.

Availability of GEC stainless 2 blade jacks (1 long blade, 1 shorter blade, pivoting at same end with the secondary blade and spring being thinner stock) is practically non-existent. Can't buy them anywhere at any price. GEC should get working on this right away.

There are custom knife makers that will make that for you.

Part of the market reality is that some people assume GEC will be around forever, and others believe we are in a golden age of GEC products and design and they just ain’t training a lot of master cutlers anymore at the colleges and trade schools.

I lean towards those who think it makes sense to get nice GECs now before it’s impossible to get any. The folks that currently own, operate and work at GEC are a special group of knife enthusiasts and traditionalists - nothing lasts forever and quality products made with love and integrity are hard to come by. Most GEC knives will never be made again.

I find most GEC knives are as nice as customs, minus the super steel and super jigging.

Fortunately, one can still buy a 40 dollar Case or Buck slippie, or a thousand dollar plus custom.
