I mix the FeCl3 about 50/50 with warm/hot water and use a Q-tip to apply the solution. Keep the surface as completely covered as possible. Doesn't take long, between 30 seconds and 2 minutes depending on how dark you want to go. Rinse with running water to arrest the action (you will need to dry and oil the joints afterwards). I use Flitz to "knock down" the darkness and leave a more aged look.
Be sure to really clean the steel first. I use acetone (fingernail polish remover).
I haven't had a chance to use it yet but it feels good in hand. Real easy pull on these though, a smooth 4. I suppose you don't want bear trap springs on a knife you may have to open one handed.Dead, how do you like the fish knife?.
And thanks Steve, I've been waiting for a Big Jack for awhile. Then one finally came up in the trade forums and jumped right on it. Been happy ever since.
OddFuture I like your style. I'd kill for the stag Big Jack.
Here is what I call, In Defense of the Shield-less. Depending on the frame and the covers I think it can look beautifully minimalistic.

Sweet lineup Ed! If I had to choose one, I'd take the jack between the barlow and the powderhorn (sorry, I'm not up to speed on all the GEC names).
