GSM Outdoors acquires SOG Knives

Have to agree they had started to upgrade some of their stuff. I recently purchased a Terminus XR and although it took a bit to break in it turned out to be a nice knife. I have also heard good things about the Pillar but have never handled one. The Machine rolls on.

I own 4 Cold Steels (plus 1 fake) and only 1 SOG -- an Elite II OTF Auto. Of these, my favorites are the CS Code 4 (CTS-XHP) and the Elite II.

Bought them when I 1st started collecting knives and was only looking towards the cheaper end. Don't even consider Cold Steel or SOG now when I'm looking for a new knife to buy. So, it really doesn't matter to me what happens to CS or SOG from now on.

Man, and SOG seemed to be turning things around. The one XR folder I've owned was excellent, and anecdotally they seem to have a handful of really solid models these days.

Apart from continuing to ship knives, I haven't seen any positives emerge from GSM's acquisition of Cold Steel. And Cold Steel was already doing fine keeping things in stock, so... :(

I'm glad I have all the CS knives I will ever need. The SOG knives I've seen didn't impress me, so no loss there. Ditto Gerber.

Stick Man has been doing a great job chopping pigs in half so as far as I can tell Cold Steel is in good hands.

The SOG brand has a lot of history but arguably they don't make anything of value to enthusiasts today.
I give it a 50/50 chance that either SOG was bought just to be the lower value knife brand to sell below Cold Steel, or SOG was bought because the brand has de-valued as much as it ever will and now they give it a premium re-launch to market with Cold Steel.

The worst that could happen is SOG stays as it is now, and it's equally likely that the products will improve.

Interesting news. SOG has some interesting newer stuff, but nothing that really appeals to me. I do not have any urge to panic buy any SOGs like I did Cold Steel!

Have to disagree with others. SOG has been making some far more interesting things these last few years primarily around their XR lock and running steel like S35VN and the fixed blade Pillar was pretty well received. If this does start to hurt the quality of their blades it will be unfortunate because they were really starting to turn things around and setting themselves apart from competition from KAI and CRKT.

XR lock and running steel like S35VN
:)I gotta admit , I've been tempted by some of these , but hard to trust anything SOG for me for a long time now .

Used to love their Seki stuff way back when , but then ...:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

I think the last SOG knife I purchased was a Seal Pup from a Dick's Sporting Goods. I didn't need it, but it was the last one they had that they were closing out. Of course, typical of their policy, they didn't come down off price. I didn't mind though because it was a Seki City offering and a pretty nice minimalistic knife for canoeing.

I do have a couple of their hawks. Nice for what they are if a bit overpriced for soft stainless steel. I have felt their knives have been a little higher in price than they warrant given the materials.

I was more upset about the CS buy out.

Damn, just when I was getting excited about SOG. They've been doing some cool stuff with the XR lock and the LTE frames made of carbon fiber. I got a Kiku XR a few weeks ago and it hasn't left my pockets since. I may have to buy a few extras.
