Gso-4.7

I sat staring at the order page for the 4.7 and don't know what I should do. My 5.1 is completing and coming soon, and 4.1 is in the making. Ideally I would like to have one of every model, but I got limited funds. I am so tempted but I am trying to control myself. Maybe I should just order a 3.5 instead to pair with the 5.1, and the 4.1 could pair with my soon to be made 7/7 and totally ignore the 4.7? Decisions, decisions, decisions!

I don't own any, but the 4.7 is in the middle, so since I can only afford one, that's why I'm buying it.

Do those who have seen them in person prefer the black or the green canvas? I usually lean towards black, but they look kind of washed out in the picture.

The black will look washed out if it's dry. I believe they use mineral oil when they install the handles on the knives to create a barrier so rust won't form underneath the scales. If you like your handles really black, try RIT dying them using the powder pack. I did my old 4.1 and 3.5 and it looks great to me. Here's my 3.5 before and after.

I'd say go for it but you don't want to overextend yourself. That 4.1 you're getting is going to probably blow your mind!

I thought you had g10. Shows what I know. Lol. That looks good. PS I checked in on that place for liner material. Guess they don't have a Mobil site so I'll have to hop on there sometime when I'm back home.

Is there any other model besides the 4.7 getting cpm154? Will it be an offering for the 3.5. Cause if not I'm gonna be forced to buy a 4.7!!!

Man, Guy really knows how to make a knife nut go broke!

It does get shiny after a lot of use so it kinda looks like g10.
I'm wondering if they have a desktop version at the bottom of the website that'll work on your phone.

That's what I was thinking about the 4.1 and that's why I am not sure if I should still go for the 4.7 knowing that it is not too much a difference to both the 4.1 and 5.1 which are coming to me soon. I guess I will give it a miss this time round and only get one later when more funds are available.

I believe that the colored layers are the epoxy, the grey bands are the canvas. The material will look "washed out" when cleaned, but will quickly absorb oil from your hand, and whatever else the knife is exposed to and darken to black or green or whatever color the epoxy is. If you wipe the whole knife down with mineral oil it will re-darken the handles. If you want it very black, RIT dye works extremely well, it soaks right into the exposed canvas fibers. You can also polish the micarta to make it less absorbent, for an example of highly polished micarta look at what Bark River does, their polished micarta looks shiny like most G10.

I use the darkness of the handles to tell me when its time for a knife bath, who knows what's growing on there...

Will the 3V knives that have been preordered ship with the "new" HT or the original? I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference but I am curious what I'm getting.

I think the four you mentioned would work well together for specific purposes and contrasting size ranges. The 4.7 would be a little redundant and "less necessary" given what you'll already have and the realities of budget. If my personal finances were unlimited I'd have 5 of every model and 10 of some models :D

Also, with the new production format, I'd hope that if you change your mind later and do need a 4.7, you won't have to wait long.

Which new heat treat are you talking about? The NEW new Nathan the Machinist HT is not going to be used until further notice. Everything shipping out directly from Guy and Ellie will have the new HT and finish compared to the GSO 5 I have. Does that answer your question?

Sorry to hear that f.2 I hope it wasn't here. All regulars here and just about any guest I've seen come through are typically very friendly and helpful.
Nope, not here. Much better atmosphere here on bf.

Micarta is a trademark name originally used by Westinghouse for materials in a phenolic resin. That is why we don't use the term and just refer to them as canvas or linen. Technically, either of them could be a Micarta. Guy was saying Wikipedia even says the G10 could be considered a Micarta.

But yes, in the knife world people tend to use the term micarta for canvas.

Thanks Ellie!

Thanks bro! I have decided. I will give the 4.7 a miss now and if funds are available later and more supplies comes up I will get one. I will reserve the chance for you to acquire 5 of the 4.7 then. Lol!
