Gso-4.7

Our plan is to send out a few unmarked "secret steel" knives, in order to get some unbiased feedback from users. Once we hear back from those people, we will let everyone in on the details.

Edit to add: Don't worry, I will keep you all updated on here.

Will those only be 4.7s? Do a few lucky random people who ordered a 4.7 get picked? Cuz If so, I will order a 4.7 just for a chance at that. Shoot Ide order a 4.7 knowing I was going to get a mystery steel for my knife and run a head to head comparison with my 3V 5.1 for edge retention, ease of resharpening and corrosion resistance. Except I can't be cause they are already in production and preorders are closed.

I know you can't give us hooligans too much special treatment, but if you have a beater 4.7 in mystery steel sitting around maybe there would be some interest in a pass around. We could have a sign up thread (dare I say "SURVIVOR!s only") and the test blade would be sent to the first person on the list and then that person sends it on to the next all the way down the line. Thoughts and pics would be posted in the thread for the benefit of all. The test blade then gets sent back to me, I mean SURVIVE! I don't know how hard this would be to regulate or if it is even possible, but I thought I'd mention it as I had this same thought when those few old specs were sent out with the new finish.

I've got a pile of 52100 in the form of SR-101. I love the stuff, the one down-side being it is not stainless. I'd be very interested in seeing 52100 from Guy, so if indeed it's 52100, put me down for thirds!

The rumor mill is grinding for sure, but one reason I thought of 52100 is because you apprently can do magic with the proper (and new) HT protocols. I know Daniel Fairly on this forum does some awesome stuff with that steel and I've always wanted one... Fingers crossed!

But after been playing with the R&D of the new 3V finish, I can't understand why anybody would like another steel. :) I only wish the 2.7 was available in 3V too.

My dad is a paramedic and I've been eyeing a 2.7 for him. He wanted something he can use to pry on screen doors to get to people or car parts to get to the injured and the S! Line was the first thing that popped into my head. I would have liked to see it in 3v as well, but I understand Guy's philosophy and why there's not much need when he offers it in 20cv.

Does 52100 tend to surface stain/patina or is it worse and it will pit and such?

While many things factor into corrosion resistance, 52100 steel only has a touch over 1% chromium so it can rust aggressively if not cared for.

Is this 52100 material cheaper than 3v or 20cv though? I'm only asking to see if it might be the answer to to SK line of knives.

SR-101 is pretty interesting stuff. I have a RMD in SR-101 and it's pretty easy to strop. Anyway, does your SR-101 have the cryogenic treatment? I wonder if this really works or actually makes a difference for knives. I've heard good things about gun barrels with this treatment but knives don't get the kinds of stress or pressures that barrels go through with every shot. It would be interesting to put 3v or Guy's mystery metal through this treatment.

Great question and one that's in my mind as well. I've been more interested in the GSO line, but I'd look hard at the SK line if so.

My experience: 52100 stains quickly with use in anything wet. It does not seem to rust deeply, and I have had no problem with pitting and I'm pretty hard on stuff. Also, after the patina develops it seems to give it a protective quality that less easily forms surface rust.

Yes, I believe the cryogenic treatment is called for in their HT protocol. I do not know that this is the case with all 52100.

You can throw my name on that list. :D

I agree !
I wiuld love to participate in the testing. A pass around is an excellent way to see how a knife performs and resists abuse

Guy's only complaint with a pass around is that the 2nd, 3rd, so on folks are essentially getting a used blade. He cares a lot about the condition of the edge for anyone who gets a SURVIVE!.

We could mail them back and have Guy strop it on his majestic beard and you guys send it to the next recipient. Just a thought. It could also give y'all at S! to check out the damage between contestants.

I understand your concern but real world use is the best test for a blade (bushcraft, camping etc...).
I'm pretty good at sharpening a blade and I'm sure my fellow survivors are as well :D

I don't want to be misunderstood as being argumentative, because that isn't my intent. I know Survive! values customer feedback, but they don't have to prove anything to us, nor do they need our appraisal of a knife's performance. They have proven themselves by making a high quality product in the U.S.A., by standing behind it, and by offering unprecedented customer service and customer relations.

I am sure we would all enjoy beating on a knife beyond what we would actually do to our own knives, because we are all curious what these knives can take. I don't think, however, that it's the company's responsibility to provide this. (I have 8 Survive! knives as I write this, and 4 on order. I would not have this sort of investment if I had doubts about the capabilities of their knives or the quality of their products.) I don't put my own knives through torture tests, and I don't share my knives with anyone who would.

I would gladly participate in a pass around, and I am willing to pony up my portion with anyone else who will join me... But this is not Survive!'s duty to provide. And I don't agree that any of us should expect it... Ever. They owe us nothing.

Still love me? (Did you ever? LOL)

You are 100 percent correct. There have been othe companies that have done this. There have also been other knife owners that have used their own knives for pass arounds.
