Gso 6 vs 5.1

Just received a 5.1 today so I guess I would have to go with that. I have other brands with and without, either way you will enjoy. Jamgta, love the setup. Where did you get sheath?

GSO 6, 4.7 & 4.1

I have a 5.1 in 20CV and am awaiting my pre-ordered 6 also in 20CV. So to this point I only have experience with a 5.1 and I love it!!! I haven't found myself using the choil or having much need for the choil yet so I have a feeling I will like the 6 better but until I have them both in hand I can't say either way.

Also I wouldn't let that qtr. inch be a deciding factor... I mean can you imagine if your gf's were to feel that way >__< hahaha jk jk all in fun :) :)

I have two new 5.1's in 3v and 20cv, one older 5.1, two 4.1's, two 3.5's, one 5, and a 7/7. My favorite so far are the newer 5.1's, but the 4.1 is usually my primary backpacking knife. I'm planning on doing a two night backpacking trip this weekend in the Sierra Nevada's to test out the 5.1 in 20cv. I actually like the choil on the 5.1. I never owned a 6 so I can't really compare.

I think I would like the 6 better than the 5.1, but I did not wanna wait on the 6. I will try to pick one up along the way. I hope the 6 feels as good as the 4.7 in a bigger package. I would be interested in the 7 if it did not have the choil.

I love my old spec. 5.1s, but I must say that my current CFV 4.7 is pretty darn fine. There is a significant difference in blade thickness between the two knives, and for a 1 knife option I would still carry the 5.1 every time. The choil provides additional capability in doing fine work with the knife. The GSO I have carried more than any other is the 4.1 though. I also have a new spec. 5.1 inbound that I got off of the exchange just this week. I love the ergonomics of the 4.7, and I can't wait to compare old spec. 5.1 to new. I have the GSO 5 as well I picked up from S!K as a factory second a while back. So between the 4.7 and the 5, I still like the beefier blade of the 5, but ergonomics go to the 4.7. I have not done anything side by side, so this opinion is just based on my personal bias as far as my philosophy for what I want a mid sized knife for. I also have a 6 on preorder. This is a knife that I did not go after old spec. because I loved the 5.1 so much for what I used it for, a 1 knife solution. This is pretty silly of me because I never just have one knife on me. I always have something around my neck and in my pocket with a multi-tool always on my belt. So the 6 will ultimately work for me just fine. But if I had to go to field/bush with absolutely only 1 knife, I would choose the 5.1.

Since you like the ergos on the 4.7, I think you're going to be happy with your new spec 5.1 Mac.

It's so funny how preferences change between people. I like my 5.1 but the 4.7 is a whole different category of excellent for my tastes. There is nothing I would prefer the 5.1 over the 4.7, it feels so much better in hand. My hand, I should say. It's all subjective.

It is all very subjective. I always thought the old egos were just fine. Little did I know how much I would like the new scales and handle profile.

There are a lot really good blades out there in the world but there seems to be a shortage of truly excellent handles.

Did you get a chance to compare the old spec 5.1 to a new spec 5.1

I have both old and new spec 5.1s in 3V and I prefer the old spec handles, but the new spec blade finish. They are pretty nearly neck and neck though and I wouldn't pass up either.

The 6 works better for me though. More or less the same size and weight but more cutting edge, and I don't use the choil.

Really interesting preference, Citori. I would say most folks love the newer handle ergonomics, but prefer the old-spec, tumbled/stonewash finish. You may be the only one I've ever heard state a preference the other way...

Old spec 3V on two of my knives has shown some discoloration from blood and salt water. The one new spec 3V I have has so far been fine despite seeing about the same conditions.

As for handles, once the edges are raduised so they don't feel blocky, I tend to prefer less contouring to more. The new gen handles are fine for me though, which was a surprise given how aggressively contoured they are.

Thank you. I have been wondering about the 6 again, and now the 4.5, considering that I currently have a 5.1.

Interesting about the surface discoloration... The new heat treat and surface finish (while maybe showing more scuffs/scratches) does have better corrosion resistance.

So your new specification 3V is on a 2016 model year 5.1? There is another adjustment to the heat treat on the 3V starting with the 4.1 model and on all subsequent models.

A little late to the game but here are a few photos from about 3 or more years ago. The 6 was my first GSO. I thought it was going to be too big but I found that it was pretty easy to control and was comfortable to use. I then got a 5, 4.1 and a 5.1 about 3 months later and fell in love with the 5.1. Unfortunately I don't use my 6 any more but I've got it in one of my bags as a back up to my 5.1 or 7/7. To answer your question, my primary S!K is a 5.1. The 6 is a very capable knife and if you're not into choils the 6 might become your favorite field knife.
