Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Blimey, it's already a few hours past breakfast, and I'll I've done is catch up with this thread  Some toasted Leeds Bread Co-op Malted Sourdough has kept me going ;)

Off to do some chores now :(

I think it's very unique coloring, José!:thumbsup: But if it's not pleasing to you, you could always try the potassium permanganate route?.

Both are certainly Weekend Pocket Worthy!;)

Thanks a lot Dennis, but as for the stag I think it will stay anyway.
I'm afraid of not doing the job well done.:(

I went to the the town of Pontefract yesterday. Historically, it was an important place, but is just a small market-town today, surrounded by large power stations, and the remains of the old coal mines which once fed them.

LDmCGni.jpg

My main reason to for going there was to visit the remains of the historic castle, which I've not been to since it was closed for a 5-year long renovation programme, which from what I could see seemed to mainly involve despoiling the ruins with a lot of modern concrete, and generally Disneyfying the place :( Having visited several times before, I was actually pretty shocked by the changes, and don't think I'll be bothering to visit again

Here's how the castle looked in its heyday...

Interesting suggestion Natchezz  Over the last few decades, the Sheffield makers have been cutting their stag much thicker than in the past, sometimes this is down to a lack of skill, other times to demand from their wholesale customers, often it's been led by the poor quality stag they have had to struggle with since the Indian Government's ban on Sambar stag (the Hartshead Barlows use Sambar which predates that). For the most part, I take what I get, the thicker stag can be more ergonomic on some knives, but I really do like the thinner cut stag, which I think shows a cutler's skill. What I really hate, and I've seen plenty of this in the past 20 years in Sheffield, is where they cut the stag too thick, and then grind off the bark. I have a Trevor Ablett knife, the handles of which are almost completely white and featureless, and the first "Senator" (their description, not mine), I had from Wright's, was simply awful (see below).

I try to get them to cut the stag thin, but to some extent they have to work with the stag they have, and it's always a real effort to get them to make things differently to what they've gotten used to. The Barlow bolsters provide a guide at least ;)

I'll take some pics of mine in a bit

I always like to read your comments about Wrights and your dealings with them. You would think they could do the shaving (thinning) from the underside, not the bark side!? On your knife pictured, they might as well have used smooth white bone and made them slim.

That's kind of a bloated mess...

I think that would look quite nice if they didn't bother trying to save the last bit of "character" and just polished it down to a smooth white.

I'm mighty pleased with my Small Sambar SFO. The pile side isn't as pretty as the mark side, but the thickness is perfect.

Don't get me wrong. I do like the pile side, it's just that the fiery color on the mark side is amazing and also photographs better.

The fresh apple harvest is just one of the reasons I love the Fall.

It surely was a grand castle at one time. But the refurbish looks horrible... Modern materials and techniques don't fit.

Awful isn't it? Particularly as it was supposed to be from their 'Premier' range. It had lots of other flaws too :( I sent it back, and got a much better one. Unfortunately, ordering sight unseen, you just never know what you're going to get. Knives of that standard shouldn't even be leaving the factory o_O

Yes, I love the natural bounty to be found John :) I hate to see food rotting on the trees, or underneath them, as I often do here I'm afraid :(

Apparently one of the strongest in the country at one time. Many castles were destroyed after the English Civil War, but this one looked a lot better BEFORE all the work. Still, they've got a cafe and a kid's playground now o_O

Don't get me started mate! o_O  :D  I don't understand this at all, and it's not as if stag is a flimsy material. I remember showing Stan Shaw one, and he just said, "Why have they taken half the bark off?!" And that was a much better example than the one above

I've just remembered I need to go and take some stag pics! :D I've been giving this one a tickle ;)

I haven't posted in this thread for a week; apologies for my neglect. :(
Here are some almost randomly selected posts from earlier in the past week.

Red horn jewel, Dave!

The flock keeps growing but it still needs another Hartshead Barlow, perhaps two, and a couple/three more Lambfoot with ebony covers.

Dynamic dozen, ED!

A very handsome Stag Lamb, Gary! Love the overall shape of it!:):thumbsup:

Thanks, Dennis. Your stag Hartshead Barlow lambsfoot SFO is immaculate and looks like it can keep you right on course!

...
Me neither Gary, it was off the cuff :D
...
A white horse walks into a pub. The barman says, "Hey, we've got a whisky named after you!" The horse replies, "Why do they call it Eric?"

It's packaged up and ready to go in the mail today my friend :) I'm sorry Wright's took so long to make you a replacement o_O

Not anymore I'm afraid! :( Thank you Gary, I'll try and get the treasure photographed over the next couple of days :)
You're a wordsmith, Jack!
I'd never heard the White Horse version of the joke, but they're identical, aren't they?
Thanks again for your advocacy on my behalf with Wright's.
I'd better search the Forums for "Jack's treasure" since I might have missed it with my sporadic participation at BF this week!

Admirable photos of your ironwood, Chin; exquisite edge!
Looking forward to hearing about Aussie trees when you have the time! ;)

Good Monday Morning Guardians
Mondays are reserved for staff meetings, committee meetings, PLC, and such (no students). My boss won't be in today, so it's a couple of very quick meetings and then back home. Not a bad way to start the week. :D
WCFL is stunning as ever, John!
The students don't EVER have school on Mondays, John? Is that just for your school or district or for the whole county or state?

...
After all, Halloween is coming and the Wolf wants to howl!!!
...
Well put, John; I like your attitude!

Some pictures of two spectacular lambsfoot knives with two magnificent woods.:D;)

...
"Spectacular" and "magnificent" are exactly right, José!

We're going to find out. ;)
The one thing I didn't care for was the sharp edge finish of the wood, especially at the butt end of the knife.
So, I took a little sandpaper to the butt end of the knife and smoothed out all that sharp edge. It feels better in the palm now.
...
My Grandpa used to say that you could catch a bird if you put salt on its tail, and you could tame a wolf if you sandpaper its butt!

...
Thought I'd carry this one today, my 2017 Guardians Lambsfoot SFO

Nice display of Yorkshire Pride, Jack!

Good morning Guardians.

Great pic, Mark!

Good Morning Guardians
I'm carrying on with the Ironwood
John, I think Sköll is bolder already after the brief time he's been turned loose!

Mornin' Guardians!
Jelly rides again!
...
Good to see Jelly, your WCFL, Matt! (I like seeing your Wrattler in other threads, but I missed seeing Jelly.)

Two smalls for Tuesday. Hope all you Guardians are having a good day!

Splendid pair, natchezz natchezz !

Good Evening/Morning Guardians
The electricity may be off for a few days for us, ... As you can see, the patina on Skoll is starting to come along.
...
I thought you were referring to power being out for part of your remodel, but I'm finally aware that it's happening all over California. Is that a new policy, or has it happened for years?
What's been the main patina contributor so far?

...
Some Vietnamese Beef Pho:
...
Some curried Kingfish, Eggplant and Snake Gourd from a Tamil Sri Lankan joint (this one was less than $10 Aussie dollars in the working class suburb of Dandenong):
...
And one of my own humble Sambar venison curries:
...
Fantastic Food Fotos, Chin! I'll have #2 and # 3, please.

...
I've been walking more in the last few weeks motivated by finding pics to share for the series :) and actually feeling stronger and with more endurance. Most days we go with my wife and kids for 6 km ( and once a while we may do 8 to 10 km).
The sun is setting earlier and earlier this days and old winter is around the corner, we'll try to keep active as much as possible and beat our Canadian winter.
Carrying my lambsfoot on my walks is now habit. I may carry/rotate other knives during the day but if i go walking it does not feel right unless is my lamb :)
Thanks for the insight into some of your life, Dan! Those 6K family walks sound fantastic!

...
Morning Guardians, all this good-looking ebony has got me wanting to carry some ;)

5fZCfUQ.jpg

Have a good day folks
Does your ebony have a natural red glow, or is it reflecting a fire in the structure behind the knife?

I was going to do some yard work yesterday, but the frost didn't heed its advisory, and I'm not wading into the shrubs until the ticks are well chilled.
...
Prudent policy!

Maybe I should carry my lucky lambsfoot tomorrow:

Go 'Stros! (Must-win game tomorrow.)
Vince, your knife must have worked in that Game 5!
Keep it going full-time against the Yankees, please. I didn't care for the first game. :(

Union Jack has been my lambsfoot all week:

It sure is a beauty, Rachel. I agree, that is the perfect thickness.

It's all good then. ;)

WCFL is stunning as ever, John!
The students don't EVER have school on Mondays, John? Is that just for your school or district or for the whole county or state?
Thanks, GT. :)
At our alternative setting, the students go to school once a week (twice for math) for direct instruction and are on independent studies the rest of the week. I have meetings on Mondays and teach the other four days.

My Grandpa used to say that you could catch a bird if you put salt on its tail, and you could tame a wolf if you sandpaper its butt!
That's right along the lines of, "it's always in the last place you look." :D

John, I think Sköll is bolder already after the brief time he's been turned loose!
He is enjoying his freedom, that's for sure.

I thought you were referring to power being out for part of your remodel, but I'm finally aware that it's happening all over California. Is that a new policy, or has it happened for years?

Last year a downed power line caused a big fire that cost many lives and homes. The company got sued for a ton of money and almost went bankrupt. So now when it's dry and windy, they shut down the power to save lives and prevent being sued for a ton more. It's pretty inconvenient but I can see their side of things.

I think that would look quite nice if they didn't bother trying to save the last bit of "character" and just polished it down to a smooth white.
