Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

The Extraordinary Adventures of Linus the Lambsfoot

Linus arrived yesterday in the post, a little weary from his travels, but in good shape.
...
(This is, of course, from @Pàdruig's passaround.). ...
Thanks, guys. By the way, here's an addendum to the above post:
CVmJvnP.jpg

I meant to include this, Linus being introduced to my flock.
I've enjoyed reading about the adventures you and Linus have shared this week, Vince; really like that shot of Linus meeting your flock of lambs!:thumbsup::cool:

Thank you for the Ironwood compliment Gary! Your Valley Jack is a prime example of the 2019 Guardians SFO!:)

Really great photo of your Valley Jack, GT!

Veel dank for the compliments on Valley Jack, Ron & Harvey & Dennis & Mark. :)
Harvey, thanks for the extra photos of your fantastic I*XL; you and the knife certainly do excel!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
Dennis, I hope you're back in the saddle again before you know it! ;) Fine Foto!

Great weekend and very well filled Gary.;)

Wow, you have some energy my friend! That's quite the to do list. I won't embarrass myself by comparing my list of accomplishments today. :D
Thanks so much for the compliment Gary! Your thoughtful words are an inspiration to us all.
...
Muito obrigado, José & Mark. :) This weekend has not been nearly as productive. But I got at least 7 hours of sleep last night for the first time all week, and that's a blessing!:cool::thumbsup:

Going with "Long Tom" today.

Grand grain on that knife, Bill!:cool::thumbsup:

I'll see if Laurel's Kitchen has a recipe that isn't too complicated for me. If I have to wing it, I'll do 1/3 whole rye, 1/3 whole wheat, and 1/3 unbleached wheat.
I'm following your bread making experiment with interest, Jer!:cool::thumbsup:
Here's a biblical "recipe" from Ezekiel 4:9:
Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself.
Multi-grain bread always appeals to me. ;)

Classy picture, GT.
Muchas gracias, John. :)

@mitch4ging - Dennis I wanted to express my best wishes for a quick recovery my friend. Very sorry to hear about your ICU ordeal but happy to see you are back home.
Great to see you here to wish Dennis well during his ordeal, Dwight!:cool::cool: Thanks for stopping by! :)

...
5K Qs 5K Qs - much thanks, GT. I gather the leaves that catch my eye, while Ari tends to his sniffing every square inch of ground.:) Your Black Jack is a beaut.
...
Harvey, Ari's standards may be too high; maybe he always thinks a better leaf is just around the corner. ;) Thanks for praising Black Jack. :)

...
Great pic of Black Jack GT, I was thinking of carrying ebony myself today, but decided to pocket my Waynorth Lambsfoot :)
...
Morning Guardians, as Crazy Canuck Crazy Canuck says, the weekend is getting closer! :) I thought I'd slip Charlie Lamb in my pocket today ;) Have a great day folks

Thanks for recognizing my pic of Black Jack, Jack Black Jack Black . :) Your ebony WCLF is very distinguished!:thumbsup::cool: I often see those notebooks in people's photos, and wish I could peek inside to see what sorts of notes folks jot down. I rarely write down anything when I'm away from home or office (although I have a little notebook I carried while I visited my daughter in Spain and kept "daily logs" of our activities; it's a precious possession).

...
Dad used to make exotic breads. Funny thing was, he would get a recipe from somebody, change everything, and then be disappointed that it didn't taste like the recipe he hadn't followed.
...
He sounds like a "cook" after my own heart! :p:thumbsup::thumbsup: I tend to try to cook "freestyle"; I like it, but my family doesn't.

Our 13 y/o daughter was one of the junior string players invited to play with a professional chamber orchestra in Ottawa. They played the Holberg Suite by Grieg.

Congrats to your daughter, and to you and the rest of the family, Dan!:thumbsup::cool:
I got goosebumps reading your post because it took me back to the days when I "supervised" my daughter's daily violin practice from when she was 4, starting Suzuki lessons, until she left for college. Most of the performances left me a little teary-eyed because I knew how much effort had gone into the preparations (especially when she was younger and I attend most practices because I had to drive her to them). No better feeling for me than when the musicians "nailed" a passage during a performance, and I knew they had really struggled with it during practices!

... I think I better leave Lucy's butt alone! ;)
My wife tells me that those are words to live by, Jack! :D:thumbsup::thumbsup:

That shot shows off Black Jack's patina nicely.

As long as your friend doesn't tell them like my grandmother did. She'd tell the whole joke in English, and then the punchline in Yiddish. I'd ask what it meant, and she'd say, "It doesn't translate." It was years later before it occurred to me they may have been "adult" jokes, and she was sparing our tender ears.:D

Lambsfoot content: A few pile side views.

...
Entertaining Yiddish joke story, Rachel! :D:thumbsup::thumbsup: I also enjoy those pile side pics; I'd forgotten about the scimitar (or Sword of Damocles?) on the pile side of your 2017 horn Guardians lambsfoot! ;):cool:

But seriously, some fantastic photos here today.:thumbsup:
;):p:thumbsup::cool: Nicely done, John; comprehensive, yet concise!

Yes. Not only does it give them an activity with positive influences, it has been shown to improve grades in school. The average GPA of the kids in our local marching band is 3.8. As you know, that's a win all the way around.:thumbsup:
I'm a big proponent of music for kids, John, but your statement is one of my primary examples of "correlation doesn't imply causation" in intro stats classes I teach; too many uncontrolled "lurking variables" to prove cause and effect.

Good evening, folks. I've largely been away from the forums due to a recent trip and a recent tragedy.

Sincere condolences for losing Saxon so suddenly and while he was so young, Dylan.
It was such a joy to see your photos of him in various settings as he grew up!:thumbsup::cool:

Thanks Jack, R8shell and Cudgee.
Our patch started when my sister bought a house back in 2002 from an elderly lady who happened to be known for her Raspberry jam. Not having time for jelly making and young kids running around, my sister asked that I remove the sizable patch from her new backyard. I'm sure the patch had been fruitful for MANY years as the previous owner lived there for decades. It felt wrong, in some way, to eradicate them so I brought 3 or so plants home in buckets, knowing that they don't transplant well. Only one plant ended up surviving but within a few years they spread and started producing again.

The ancient patch lives on, although in a new location! ;)

Each year it has grown bigger and what you see is about 17 years worth of growth. The patch removed was at least twice the size of this one. I'll include a photo here.
...
That's a great story about your raspberry patch, Mark!:thumbsup::cool:
(Splendid old shovel handles, too, as the backdrop for another superb shot of one of your ironwood lambsfoots!)

Ebony today.

Linus is a handsome knife, Vince!
We've got Lucy and Linus here, but I wonder if there's a Snoopy or Pigpen or Charlie Brown (we DO have a Charlie Lamb) or Peppermint Patty out there among the Guradians' lambs.

Found Monkey on my street after the school-run. Hoping mum or dad spots him coming the other way, or there'll be tears at bedtime! ;)

Looks to me like Monkey is already crying! ;):(

I was thinking that the rollies would be less expensive and maybe better for me. So I tried this chemical free, organic, picked only on a full moon, blah blah, tobacco....it was almost 18 usd a pouch  and dry as sticks. I haven't given up on the rollies though, I picked up a pouch of Bugler for 6 usd. It has been more to my liking.
...
Better for you is probably wishful thinking! :p
48 years ago, when I mostly smoked a pipe, but would sometimes roll pipe tobacco into cigaret papers, the moisture content of the tobacco was problematic. My usual pipe tobacco at the time was Borkum Riff, but it was too moist and flaky to burn evenly in the "rollies" I was capable of making. I did much better with Flying Dutchman, which was drier and a more "stringy" cut.

It might be easier to just pay for it next time, Jack. ;):p:D

I know that's true.
I also believe music, especially a good marching band program, contributes to higher GPAs.
It teaches hard work, discipline, structure, and higher expectations of yourself.
Working for group goals and carrying out your share of the responsibilities.
Yes, I have become quite passionate about it. ;)

I haven't posted a picture of my WCLF in a while. I had it out to admire for a while this morning...

Have you tried Ezekiel Brand bread? They use those sprouted grains from 4:9. I keep it in the freezer because I can't eat a loaf before it spoils, but it is best for toast anyway.

In addition to rounding the corners, I think I'm going to file the kick down to drop the tip. Once Koll gets a patina, I should still be able to pinch the blade open, since I have no problem opening my other lambsfoot knives that way. I know the ebony isn't as jet-black as Jack Black Jack Black wanted, but even in the sunlight it's nice and dark. I think the application of brisket fat helped darken the wood. ;)

Thanks, Gary. I plan to have maybe a few short posts this week, and then a long one showing Linus my hometown of Corpus Christi. I will have an opportunity of taking a lot of good pics next Saturday, and will post Saturday or or Sunday, and send Linus on his way Monday.

Great picture, Jack. You seem to have a great collection of old bottle openers.:thumbsup:

Thank you John, I don't formally collect them, but I do have quite a few ;) :D

Not identical twins but rather fraternal twins these are two solid, well built, knives. Jack Black's SFO Hartshead Barlow beauties.

Jack Black Jack Black - How many of the Stag did you have made and how many of the Rosewood did you have made?

Nice to see those two together Ed :) There were 20 in Rosewood and 77 in vintage Sambar (should have been 80)

Happy Sunday Guardians. Having a good weekend here. Finished the October yoga challenge at our studio (30 classes in 30 days) yesterday :D

Now relaxing on the couch with a book, cup of tea, and of course, L'il Lambsfoot. Gizmo was the inspiration for this afternoon ;)

Thanks Harvey, it actually turned into a very good day on my street. I consider myself lucky to live on a wide tree-lined avenue, where everyone knows each other. Every now and again, we close the street off to through traffic and have a party of some kind. I wasn't sure what was happening today because of the weather, but it actually turned out to be a fine day. There were seats out in the street, a big wood-stove, tables piled high with food and drink, and music provided by several DJs and some guys with drums. There was also a bicycle maintenance/repair shop going on. I spent the day chatting with neighbours old and new, chopping and sawing wood for the fire, whittling sticks for the kids to toast marshmallows, and eating some nice food. It was great to see all the kids playing in the street, and there was lots of dancing and fun. It took everyone a little by surprise :)

Beautiful knife

Power shut down again here in my neck of the woods....enjoying the day so far. Hope all my Guardian's are having a wonderful Sunday!

Hope you get it on soon Taylor :)

donn donn - I enjoy seeing glimpses of the lives of others. Thank you.

Fantastic post, David.

Your welcome kind sirs.

I always enjoy seeing the beautiful scenic European pictures from Jack and donn, but also wonderful to see pictures from other parts of America.
And those many great food related pictures from everyone, fantastic!!!

Oh absolutely! One reason I come on here is to read everyone's stories, see their adventures and look at pictures of the scenery, hats, beer, guns, toys, watches, coins, cars and last but not least everyone's culinary experimentations.
I mean if it was all just knives it could get quite dull... :D

That's what I'm talking about right there. :)

New to me too, David! Thanks a lot. I think I am lucky to have them as well. They mean a great deal to me with all of the memories tied to them. Thanks for the info on the kitchen shears.

Your welcome.

By Nelson's blood!

LOL! When I spied the weevils the very first thought that popped into my head was that very scene from Master & Commander. :D

Bummer. That's why I keep flour in the fridge, along with the condiments. ;)

I'm going to have the same, but made with leftover barbecue sausage, and some whole grain German rye bread. It should make a very hearty breakfast.

Thanks Rachel. I've just read that one way is to pop your newly bought flour in the freezer which will permanently kill any weevil eggs in the flour.

Well I've been pottering about in the sun today getting done dozens of little jobs that needed doing.
Then I decided to make an apple crumble so I took this 'before' shot, but when I came to eat it I was so famished I totally forgot the 'after' shot.:D

Well my friends, Sue and I are in a ....well I am not too sure what to call it - a void of sorts where we are renting a house much closer to Work and in turn rent out our House in a Town called Pukekohe ( puk-key -ko- he ) the reason is because of simply Traffic, Auckland is absolutely Mental with its Traffic congestion - if people in the very big cities think they got it bad- unfortunately little Ol' New Zealand matches them well with this problem - Volcanic nature that makes Tubes Railways etc a lot harder to run, the travel from our House in Pukekohe now is possibly 3 hours tagged onto your long working day - where as it used to be 35 to 40 mins each way, therefore we did the shift thing, now the hard part is paying twice to three times the amount for a House here in Auckland - so we have a lot of working out to with everything.

So...we are renting - nice area, hard to find a place - but the whole-...well everything is not how we would do things- all the Gardens were like Mountain Goat tracks when we shifted in here- Sue has transformed her Garden into such a Healthy Garden- my little strip is this one, I usually place colourful annuals - but this time I wanted to place a full time perennial colour show.

This looks pretty sparse and yuk right now but these guys will get up and Boom soon with beautiful Colour, spread out and loom over the edges - just need positive energy and Hartshead was there to help, the lad got a bit dirty on it but he is getting used to that these days!

Mark my friend, Thank you, and thanks folks for the comments- The Snakewood is coming around- I am terrible when coming to get nice Knives - especially knowing you wont be able to get another like it- so I tend to Queen them, but The Snakewood is coming up for a edge to be replaced very soon, and from Factory a Slightly Thick edge- but in saying that still a nice one, so as I work through times in the Sharpening process I am thinking that perhaps the edge may become slightly thinner - its a nice Knife - very very much like all the other A.Wrights where the joints are not super soft in their actions - this isnt a bad thing - I tend to take this that this is simply "Their" thing and I am extremely happy with that, I think that we have a Great Looking Knife, that in turn is a tough working Knife - the best of both worlds.

So all in all in a 100% way Mark I am loving these Knives my friend.

The wee " Garden" - if you can call it that yet, its a rough Terraced area edging up to the Lawn, The lower path is terribly cracked and the unsightly weeds are about to disappear, Hartshead cutting his way through old weed Matting..

This quite unsightly mess will join in and explode in colour in the next few months...
