Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

I am still trying to figure out how to post pictures here, I have a nice photo, yet don't know how to add it. I am using a phone for this. (If that changes anything) If anyone could give a brief explanation that would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Afternoon Guardians, I'm back from my weekly trip to the market, and from yet another trip to the thieving opticians  At least I enjoyed the market, and it cost me a lot less! :D Cake and good crack, and some sunshine this week too :) Hope everyone else is having a good day

I use Imgur

Open an account and upload pictures to it. Select the image that you want to post and "copy" the BBcode.
Paste the code in the forums and it should work

That's a fantastic pic my friend :) It seems like a long time since micrometers were the most expensive tools a working-man might own. I inherited mine from my favourite uncle. Now, my pal with the tool-stall sells them for peanuts, people only want the digital ones :(
Thank you, Jack! They are such precision instruments with tight tolerances, but alas, people settle for an easy to read digital display. Guess I can't blame them, I must just be nostalgic and sentimental.
I was just about to grab a shave, and settle down with a beer, when one of the neighbourhood kids turned up to ask me if I'd help him make a stick. He had a nice straight piece of hazel, which I could see wouldn't take much work, but he wanted a compass fitting. We decided how long he wanted it, and I notched it with my Charlie Lamb. He said, "That seems a good idea, carrying a knife." So after I went and got my saw, and a few other simple tools, we had a chat about that. I cut the stick to size, and he sensibly decided to keep the bark on. I used a gimlet, and the awl on another knife to make a hole for a lanyard, and let him pick some paracord. He gave his stick a couple of coats of linseed oil, and we're going to fit the compass and ferrule tomorrow, and finish it off Friday. He's just joined the Scouts, and is wanting a pocket-knife for his birthday. I told him to ask his folks, and if he gets permission, I'll give him one
You are the man, Jack, well done! Bet you are popular on your block!😎👍

Neat photo! Looks like the beginning of some yardwork.
Finally found my drinking horn that I misplaced - so now I get to show off this forged stand that Jack so generously gifted me. I think I need a bigger horn - bigger horn means more ale 😁.

And of course, I’ve got this big ‘un with me today.

Yes you are correct, but people want everything Yesterday now, and i don't think people like or appreciate tools as previous generations have done. Also, as Jack says about his mate selling them, the new digital ones are just so darn cheap and can convert from Imperial to Metric with the push of a button, so for only every now and then use, you can see why people lean towards them. It would be different if you needed a quality one for you profession. Good to see you back posting mate, your comments and observations are great reading, like waiting for a weekly installment of your favorite radio serial on the old valve radio.🤣🤣🤣.

It would be nice to see your photo. Please read post #1 in this thread

That certainly adds a cool factor ;) :)

Some sunshine always helps JJ :D Yesterday was the first day here this month when it hasn't rained  The evening was pleasant too, and warm enough to sit out drinking wine in a short-sleeved shirt until late. We don't get enough days like that

Very sorry to hear about your health problems buddy, I hope things are getting better  It's good seeing you post, and that Lamb looks like a solid user :)

I was telling my pal at the market about your post Dennis. About 6 months ago, I urgently needed a pair of Vernier calipers, and with all the hardware stores closed at the time, I had to buy them online. I couldn't find a pair that didn't have a digital readout! We are losing so many old skills :(

Thanks my friend :D Within minutes of my posting, young Isaac was round again, and it didn't take too long to finish off his stick. I drilled the hole for the compass with a small hand-drill, but the chuck wasn't big enough for the correct size drill. So I used the next size down, and just enlarged the hole with my Lambsfoot. Fitted a ferrule, and gave the stick a final layer of wax, which Isaac rubbed down. It actually looked pretty good, and he was glowing with pride as he went off with it :D :)

LOL! :D Yes Dennis, and that's just with the cake! :D ;) I once bought a couple of small anvils off my friend, decorative ones, but still heavy. I completely forgot they were in my bag, and when I went over to see Stan Shaw the following day, I carried them all the way to Sheffield and back without realising! :D

Cool pic buddy :D

Good morning Guardians, that's another week gone by :) Still no rain here, and if that continues over the weekend, the news forecasters will probably be announcing a hosepipe and sprinkler ban by Monday  ;) I'm hoping for a sunny weekend anyway! :D I usually meet up with a pal on Friday mornings, but his youngest lad has to stay at home, as one of the kids in his class had a positive test-result. It's a crazy system we have here, as the two older kids can still go to school  Have a good Friday Guardians

Toting some ebony today, of the bagpipe variety ;) :D

Sigh. I have had to teach a number of young people how to use a ruler. And by young people, I mean college-aged, not children.

I have to teach my 7th grade students how to read the clock in my classroom
Every year I have to teach High School students how to read the wall clock, and use a ruler, and a protractor, and a compass (drawing circles)... sad world these days.

Well, I have my phone for time and laser measure for distance measuring...why would I need to learn any of this stuff? :D

We talk about college and high school students but I remember schooling guys on construction sites how to use a tape. Given, using a tape can be an artform (not that I know every bits of it) but would have expected better for guys full time on site.

It's a mystery to me what they actually do all day in elementary school, nowadays.

r8shell r8shell - A couple of years ago my Grandson (a Junior in high school at the time) was sitting with me at my desk looking at pictures of some of my knives and I showed him this Circular Slide Rule. He looked at it for a bit, spun the wheel, and had a jaw dropping, what the heck is this used for, look on his face. To think they built the Empire State Building using a slide rule. Even today when he visits, he still doesn't have a clue.

Incredible! I was once giving a lecture to a class of second year university students, and I used the word 'Kafkaesque'. Not one of them knew what that meant, so I tried 'Orwellian'. They had never heard of that, nor George Orwell, nor 1984 ! I suggested they might have heard the words 'Big Brother'. At last! But it turned out they thought I was talking about some stupid reality TV show  At the other end of the spectrum, I can remember having a detailed conversation with a friend's 8 year-old about the Greek classics! :D

Indeed. I was invited to a school play performed by young children a few years back. It was short, and fairly simple, and celebrated Rosa Parks. Afterwards, I was talking to the young teacher, who had organised the play, and I said to her, "You do realise that Rosa Parks wasn't the first black woman to protest against racial segregation on public transport in Alabama?" She could only look at me with wide eyes, and a flapping mouth, and looked absolutely devastated! :D

Nice photo Rachel :)

Well, what do you have planned for the weekend Guardians? I've booked in to a place a couple of friends have just opened for breakfast, and then we're going for a walk at Kirkstall Abbey . We're booked into a nice pub mid afternoon, where we'll probably get something else to eat :) I'm looking forward to it

A horn-covered Lambsfoot on a previous visit to the abbey
