Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Thanks Harvey :) Wright's had a problem using Lignum Vitae, which seemed somewhat irrational, particularly as they've used it since. Sheffield cutlers are very conservative/lazy, and getting them to produce anything different/new is always difficult. In my experience, once they're eventually convinced that a contract pattern will sell, they can't wait to rip it off
I came across a beautiful chunk of Lignum Vitae several years ago, and made some salad sets and spatulas out of it. I used a sanding drum to shape them, as they were very hard on all the cutting tools! The heat from sanding caused them to warp ferociously!!!
I can imagine hafting knives would require some delicate techniques!!

Happy Friday Eve!

Just a quick story. The Porch is an amazing place, my membership just expired, due to the current exchange rate and in the process of moving i was not going to renew it till i got established in my new digs, it was always going to be renewed. 3 members have very kindly and most graciously paid my membership, i now have 3 years membership paid. I am deeply embarrassed but deeply moved as well, it shows the good side to the forum, because there is an ugly side unfortunately, to the 3 members i am eternally grateful. Thankyou. 💖💖💖🤝.

Thank you. He actually gave us a bit of a scare the first week, but doing good nowView attachment 1864235
Best part of my work day
Glad Benny’s doing well. Nice way to kick back and relax. 😎👍
He’s my 4th. My oldest is 15. Obviously my family planning is a bit off or weird
There are 12 years between my oldest sister and youngest sister. Worked out, they are very close. 😊

As you know Charlie, lignum was once used for bowling balls and (Crown Green) bowls, and I sometimes come across the latter at flea markets 👍 I did offer to have one of these cut up, but to no avail ☹️ I thought it would look good with a Bird's Eye pivot 🙂

There was a clamour to get you reinstated Leon - with a few communication problems! 😁 Well done folks 🙂👍

Good morning Guardians, 6.30am here in Yorkshire, and it's been bright and sunny since I got up an hour ago, supposed to be in the mid 70's again. I usually meet up with my best pal on Fridays, but he has a works meeting today. I have plenty to do myself though :) Have a good Friday Guardians, it's nearly the weekend

Enjoy it JohnDF JohnDF !! 🤣 🤣 🤣

Good morning Guardians. Been a couple of busy days and my son Chris came for a weeks visit:thumbsup:. Expecting my brother in law to drop by for a few days today:thumbsup:. Rain in the forecast for the rest of the week too. Next Wednesday we will take a trip to Charleston to watch my brother's in law grandson play in a baseball tournament. Some how we'll squeeze in some golf and some good food too.:) I'll have my HHB with me.

When I've had some spare time this week, I've been making a walking staff for my neighbour's 7-year old, who always comes and asks me questions about the sticks I'm making. I'm making it from willow, and I've just been trimming the end for a ferrule, making a lanyard hole, and applying the first coat of boiled linseed oil. I'm just having a bite to eat, and then I'm going to cut a copper ferrule, from a small piece of copper piping I found in my 'make and mend' box

How do you choose the length for a seven-year-old?
Willow's nice wood.

In the hope he might not either lose it, or manage to destroy it, I've thought about the future. Currently, it is adult walking stick size, and it'll be staff size for him. If he does look after it, he should be able to use it as he grows up  It's the first time I've used willow, and I was surprised how hard it is. There's barely any bark on it, so after seasoning, I've removed the small knots, and rather than stripping the bark like I usually do, I sanded it, which gives it a sort of camo finish. The linseed oil has darkened it quite a bit. I have a longer length of willow, so maybe I'll claim that myself ;)

I've given up looking for a good stick that's a good seat. If I really have to sit down during a walk, I can lower myself to the ground and pole myself back up with this.
Those CS sticks are a lot lighter to carry! :D Nice pics Jer :)

You are well-deserving, otherwise they wouldn't do it. 🤠
Arrrrr... Nice Knife Matey. 🤠
Enjoy it I did. :)
That looks yummy. 🤠
I'm glad the weather is nice and you're out enjoying it.
That's one heck of a walking stick. o_O

A missed opportunity!! 😲 I'd love to see how they would have turned out!! Probably great!!;)

Thanks. That willow wand sounds great.
I have a couple of wild cherry trunklets that dried perfectly straight, but split a bit. Yes, Virginia, it really is advisable to seal the ends.

I have dozens of canes and sticks, so I don't know why I suddenly needed one that's impervious and indestructible. Except who doesn't like impervious and indestructible?
