My pal down the road told me he was planning to go to the park with his missus, kids, and a bunch of his wife's friends who were supposed to be coming over. I said I wasn't sure I'd make it to the park, but told him I'd see him at the bottom of the road. However, the wife's friends failed to turn up on time, and in the end, after chatting to a few other friends and neighbours, I walked onto the park alone. I was pretty tired by then, so I sat down on the grass, and drank a couple of beers I'd brought with me. The carnival timetable is always kind of...well, a bit like my mate's wife's friends...so there were only a couple of brief, small acts on the stage.
After half an hour or so, my mate still hadn't set off, and I was getting uncomfortable on the ground, so I managed to haul myself up, and set off down the slope, and then up the opposite bank. There are about a hundred food stalls, actually selling a slightly more diverse range of food and drink than in the past, and I had some Thai corn cakes, which were tasty, and very good value I thought. I wondered round, bumping into folks, some of whom I hadn't seen for several years, in one case ten!
I tried calling my friend, but the call wasn't answered, so I walked slowly back up the slope, continuing to bump into people I knew, but not my mate. I was pretty tired by this point, and aware of the fairly long walk still to come, I decided to head out of the park, hoping to bump into my mate along the way. At the end of the street, and sat on one of the large temporary concrete barriers blocking off the road to traffic. I gave him another call, but he was now in the park, and it was difficult to hear anything he was saying. Hopefully I'll catch up with him tomorrow.
As I walked back home, the crowds heading to the event were getting thicker and thicker, with folks excited, and looking forward to having fun. It was a long walk, but worthwhile, and there was a nice atmosphere at the Carnival
