It was actually May of 2016 Jack! It definitely has some rich black ebony my friend! Was it 2016?A pleasure my friend, nice to see it, and that is a great pic Ron
On the whole, I think, the ebony Wright's could get was more intensely black then. That is a good example to have as your first Lambsfoot

Wow! Jack what an eye opening video! I would have never realized that what Mr. Taylor is explaining to us has been actually happening in the cutlery world also. I have been guilty of rejecting knives from Great Eastern Cutlery with the very same conditions that was discussed in this video. Brown streaks or grayish spots in the wood were not appealing to me. After seeing this video I have come to the conclusion that I can no longer in good conscious maintain the same personal standards in regards to Ebony. I love Ebony! In all honesty it is probably my favorite handle material. So, I will cherish the Jet Black Ebony handled knives that I have and will embrace any new knives with what the forest provides to me! I can not fathom the thought of no ebony!
Jack, is there a wood that comes to mind to replace our beloved ebony for the lambsfoot?I have reached the same conclusion Ron, hard to believe we're getting to the point where we are actually exhausting the supply of certain hardwoods (he says naively)Ebony is also my favourite handle material, and I have always thought of it as a comparatively benign choice

That's a most excellent photo-JackI don't know if any of you Guardians have had a look at this thread here: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/ban-of-rosewood-cocobolo-et-al-effect-on-traditionals.1607079/ (if not you might want to take a look)?
@Astronaut FX posted a video link there, which I hope he doesn't mind me cross-posting, because I think it will be of interest here
As those of you on my Lambsfoot email list (just PM me if you're not on it), may remember, I had a great deal of trouble getting hold of black ebony for this year's Guardian's Lambsfoot run. Wright's had originally promised me "Jet-black ebony", but then the first knives produced were less than satisfactory. Wright's managed to get hold of some blacker stuff, but it wasn't quite as dark as I would have liked. I had to make several extra trips to the factory, and spend a great deal of time on the phone. I remember @Cambertree, (who is well-informed about a great many things), exchanging some emails with me, in which he raised some of the topics raised in this video, and its central concern. Much as I love jet-black ebony, realistically, and ethically, it may be time to accept a new standard![]()

In the words of a dearly missed Canadian actor, John Candy " You done good Jack, you done real good"I'm not sure Dave, perhaps we just need to have more realistic expectations for the colour of our ebony
Thank you very much my friend![]()
I had some leftover veggies, so I thought I'd make a curryMy Lambsfoot helped

Hi Jack, My inexperience shows...
I was thinking about it, checked some parts from knives I’ve broken down, and realized that if course they don’t pin the spring at the hinge end!
