Before heading to the pie shop, I decided to have a pint in one of Leeds very few unspoiled old pubs. The Templar
I usually sit in the front, but the boothes were all taken, so I sat in the back, with a small group of blokes playing dominoes. You don't see much of that these days.
I took a few photos on my way to
Pimeminister...
This cafe is tucked away, up a tiny old lane called Fish Street. It was called the Empire back in Tool Man's Day, when Leeds had a preponderance of ordinary cafes. Most recently it was called La Strega, but that closed down a year or so ago. It seems the old Empire Cafe sign was still there, behind the modern plastic one. I think it looks pretty cool. I told man, but he couldn't find his way to Fish Street, even though it's a stone-s throw from his market stall!
By contrast, the pie shop is decorated like a 1970's student refectory.
Having had chips for lunch, I decided to order mash with my pie, along with what I expected to be a pint. Not sure what measure that is, but since it was pretty undrinkable, it didn't really matter.

I hadn't been here for a while, but recent reviews encouraged me to think I was in for a treat. There's a lot of overpriced mediocre eateries in Leeds these days, and sadly
Pieminister is one of them. The pies themselves, while expensive, aren't bad, but this one tasted like it had made a visit to the microwave, with cardboard-like pastry. I can see why I was the only diner. I had to interrupt the gaggle of disinterested staff to ask for some Henderson's, which for some reason they don't stock!

I had meant to put a small bottle in my jacket pocket, just in case

The pie went down quickly, despite the pastry, and I did think of having dessert, but I couldn't be bothered to find the waitress again, and I think they only do sundaes. I wondered off to the market, hoping for something to round off my meal, but the bakery had already closed
