Hope everyone is having a good day

Question for you fellas: I've worked a bit more on the custom lambsfoot I'm commissioning Timothy La Combre to complete (about 2/3 of the way funded) and I'm curious what you think about one of the aspects I'm considering (if it is something Tim is willing to make happen, of course). Here is the updated picture:

Do you think this handle would look/feel better with a tapering butt, or a flat butt that follows the line from the bolster? Also, what do you think about the slight widening of the handle from bolster to butt? I think it would feel really secure and filling in the hand with the swell.

Let me know what ya'll think!

I would vote rounded butt, and the widening of the handle is fine. Are you putting the shield and nail nick on the pile side? Left-handed? Nice shield either way.

JTB_5 JTB_5 - Joshua I acknowledge i am a neophyte but I want to say this knife is going to be something special. I love the old world cross shield along with the partial forged finish on the blade. IMHO my choice would be a rounded butt and definitely with the slight thickening toward the butt from the blade. Not only aesthetically appealing and more secure in the hand but I'd like the extra heft it would give to it. Rag micarta can be unbelievably gorgeous but so can the right spalted maple burl. @Jsega51 posted a fixed blade custom by Karl Andersen with spalted maple burl that is unbelievable. If you want to take a gander it's posted on page 139 of - (Let's see your good old basic fixed blades, bowies and stickers etc) Good luck with this creation! I look forward to seeing the finished work.

Ha! I hadn't even thought about the side of the shield. I was just drawing from left to right like a sentence. I'll have to make a note to have that switched, as I'm right-handed. I wish I could take credit for the shield, but it is an Occitan Cross, a late Medieval or early Renaissance heraldic cross.

Thanks for the tip and the encouragement Dwight! I'm new to the lambsfoot myself, but I hope my design pays homage rather than ruins the pattern in lambsfoot folks' estimation. I think I'm partial to the rounded butt myself.

Would also go with wood over micarta--more medieval, I think! Also, as long as you're soliciting opinions, while I am no lambsfoot expert, I would think a swayback frame would work better with the lambsfoot blade.
Maybe someday I'll get a custom made!

I prefer wood as well, but I'm not sure what he'll have available. The rag micartas can look very burlish and antique, which is a good recourse if the right wood isn't available. I do think the swayback is the more traditional lambsfoot handle, but I've got two #15 EO handled lambsfoots and a swayback, so I thought a lanny's style handle would complete the variations (well, not counting teardrops, sleeveboards, equal ends, :D). I'm excited about the size of this one--it should be a pretty stout knife--longer than my #47 and a bit wider in the depth and height of the handle and blade. Hopefully it won't get to be too heavy, or I'll have to carry it on a belt sheath!

Thanks David, I'm afraid I've never been there - Sawley Abbey not Lancashire! :D ;)

Ron, you must have compromising photos of Jack . . . all your lambies have the nicest covers! ;):p

RALF taking it easy in the shade. Nice day today, finally.

LOL! :D Ron certainly has some lovely knives :) Great pic of RALF my friend

I must read those some time, great titles :) Nice background for your Lambsfoot PJ

Me too, a Lambsfoot blade will work well in any frame, but the swayback frame definitely enhances it I think

Friday is here at last my friends :) I've had a bit of a week, lots to do, and a 'To Do' list which is getting out of hand. I've been hampered by resurgent back problems, been trying to keep as active as I can, but it has restricted me, and left me tired. I finally have an appointment with a back specialist at least. Going to be a struggle to get out for a hike at the weekend, but I hope I can see a bit of the countryside at least. I don't know if any of you have anything exciting planned, but I hope you have a good one. Carrying black for Friday :)

Thanks mate, everytime I see you've posted, I'm hoping that you've received a delivery :( Has it been longer than for your 2018 Guardians? Hope you have a good day Dave

Yes, it will be 7 weeks now. The 2018 Guardians took 6 weeks I think. The other packages from a dealer in Sheffield took 9 weeks.
To add injury to an already pain, it sounds like Canada Post will walk out possibly next week, which will delay deliveries even more.
This whole thing is starting to wear me down...:(

Oh no  I really hope you get your deliveries soon my friend, I really feel for you, it is so frustrating :( At the very least they should be refunding the cost of postage. It is absolutely disgraceful. Try and keep your chin up my friend, you've shown great spirit

My goodness, it's already Friday and I haven't even posted a pic of the lambsfoot I've been carrying since Monday.:(
I try to make time to read the thread, but haven't posted since Sunday (except one brief reply to dc50 dc50 ); I hope I can rectify that sometime in the next 72 hours.

Here's this week's lambsfoot: Black Jack, my 2018 ebony Guardians Lambsfoot.

ETA: Well, that photo is acting like I tried posting from Photobucket, even though I've never done so. Maybe I've now exceeded my lifetime maximum for posting directly to BF. Looks like I'd better start uploading pics to Imgur again; I got out of the habit of doing that in February, thinking I could do direct posts to BF, even though I think I realized that was too good to be true for long.:(
ETA: Now the pic has appeared :rolleyes:, but I still think my motto should be "Imgur, here I come!"

GT, that's a peach of a lambsfoot! Or, a nectarine? ;)

And, yes, this week has flown by! I hope you and the other Guardians have fantastic weekends.

Thanks, Jack! Don't think they're in print, but will check used book stores. Picked them up over 20 years ago at an establishment that caters to hunters, fishermen, ranchers, and farmers. Skeeter wrote for "Shooting Times", a gun magazine. The books are a collection of his better stories/articles/essays. I think you would enjoy them.
I picked up a book recently by one of your fellow Yorkshiremen, James Herriot: "All Creatures Great and Small", which I am looking forward to reading.

Sorry to hear about your recurring back problems. I hope that specialist can help. Have a great weekend!
