Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

With Jack Black Jack Black out of commission (really hope you’re feeling better soon!) and unable to do his usual Thursday market visit, you Guardians are going to have to settle for my trip to the University of Minnesota’s surplus warehouse (or “Reuse Program,” as they call it). It’s open to the public on Thursdays and Saturdays.

This place can be a bit overwhelming, and often contains quite a lot of useless junk. But if you’re willing to do a bit of digging, sometimes you can find something worthwhile. Here’s what it looks like when you walk in.

I’ve been on the hunt for something new to store my knives in, as the old parts cabinet I’ve been using is now overflowing. What I’d really like to get is a metal flat filing cabinet, the kind you’d use for storing maps or blueprints, but they’re expensive, and I’ve found it hard to find a good used one.

This place regularly posts new items they have on Facebook (I’m not on Facebook, but my wife follows them and shows me anything of interest that they post). Yesterday they posted these, which they called “storage boxes with specimen display drawers,” and I wanted to take a look and see if they might work for storing knives.

Although they were all turned on their sides and I couldn’t really slide the drawers out, I found a couple more that had extra drawers stacked on top, and I let my HHB give one of the drawers a test run.

I do think these would work quite well for knife storage, but they were actually bigger than I expected (and a bit ugly, if I’m being honest), and I don’t know that they’d work for the space I have. They were also asking $200 each. So I passed, and will keep looking.

(Also, I’m not exactly sure what kind of specimens they were storing in these. I should’ve had read the labels on the drawers in that second photo. I’m afraid you can’t really make them out from the picture. I know a drawer in another one was labeled “Racoon.”)

Since we were there, we walked around a looked at all the other random stuff they had. We’ve had some luck finding interesting/useful stuff here and at the ASU surplus in Tempe when we lived in Arizona, so it’s always worth a look. But like I said, you do have to be willing to sort through quite a lot of junk. Here’s a pic from the back corner of the warehouse, opposite the entrance.

U of M trash can, anyone?

And who doesn’t need a used prosthetic leg?

Kj7DRUZ.jpg

The prices here can be all over the place, and sometimes seem a bit high (they were asking $50 for the leg), but they try to move stuff out pretty fast, so after a couple weeks everything gets discounted a bit, then discounted again and again, a little more every week, until they’re practically giving it away.

Although I didn’t need a fake leg, I didn’t leave empty handed. Earlier this year, I bought three matching bookcases here, which replaced some old bookcases we didn’t really like anymore. Today I found a fourth one exactly like the others, so I couldn’t pass it up.

This one is missing some shelf brackets, but I had to get a few brackets for the first three I bought, so I know where I can order more. It also turned out that they’ve had this one out for a while, and it was discounted quite a bit. I paid $8 for it. 😁

Once we got that loaded up (these bookcases are, irritatingly, just a couple inches too long to close the tailgate), Scout and I grabbed a quick lunch, which we ate at a park before she had to go to preschool for a few hours.

Creature of habit here. I think the ocean shot is on turnout father south than last week. Los Tres Chiles at the Mexican restaurant tonight, with condiments. View attachment 2337863View attachment 2337864

David, the Captain is looking good.

Wrong colors!

Knife guy though I be, I have to admit that some of these modern gizmos have their benefits.

Such a unique lamb Jer. 👌
I can't find your latest time saver on the zon.😏 I give up, what does it slice?

Good morning Guardians. Got my flu shot and Covid booster yesterday. Now both shoulders are sore as all heck. Will take a few days to wear off I'm sure but it won't stop me from doing anything. My hope is if I contract Covid or the flu that it won't be severe. Got Covid for the third time last August and the symptoms were what I would describe as mild; like a head cold. One of my golfing buddies is a nurse and said that the latest statistics on Covid hospitalizations is that over 95% of people who have been hospitalized, in our area, from this awful virus have not had any immunization shots.

Today I am still carrying my HHB. So,what else is new?😄 Maybe I'll have a shot of my Highland Pard today to ease my shoulder pain a bit.

Received my shot also Bill. The soreness is worth it.
Nice HHB.

Nice pic of your HHB !

I'm getting my covid booster this afternoon 👍

Good morning thank you for the kind words. I have two on the bench right now to see if I can screw up right as I finish 😂
Daniel the provenance of this knife makes it one of the coolest lambs out there. 👍👍

I understand the itch! I have a buckeye burl lamb recover in the works!

Dang Jack, sorry to hear you are sick. Hydrate and then hydrate. Hopefully it will pass quickly.

I’ve had it twice and the second time around was easier. 🙏

BTW, that'd be 0.104 😆

A few questions...what material is that? Do you use these for fit up and then transfer that over to steel? Was just curious as I've seen other's paste just the paper layout on to steel and start grinding.

Amazing skills! Thank you for sharing!

You’re right I didn’t correct it on the paper 😂 , that material is micarta and normally I use it for handles. And yes they are fitted just like they were steel then when they are sized correctly I move it to steel. Paper templates work too I just like these.

We'll be living on the moon next Jer (I remember folks saying that when 'Pong' first came out)! 😁👍

Good news on the shots Bill (sorry about the sore arms). I was ok with the shots, didn't get much soreness, and no adverse reaction. I think I have had 4 shots, but it's about a year since the last one. They were quick to roll out the programme here, but quick to mothball it too 🙄 I hope you don't get it again buddy. This is my third time, more severe than the last two, but it still just like a bad flu, with a few nasty extras thrown in 😣👍

Sounds like a good time to give it a try Bill (though I have heard advice not to drink alcohol for a day or two after the shots) 👍
Thanks!

Good luck Steve 👍
Let’s keep the Faith that it will pass and you will be back to tip-top shape!
Thank you very much Pete 🙂 I don't know about tip-top shape, but I would settle for vertical! 😁 👍

We want Tool-Man! We want Tool-Man!

Sorry, Vince. If it helps, I did eat part of Scout’s lunch in addition to my own. 😁

Must have been roadkill to get 'em in those shallow drawers 🦝

🤣

I’m really not sure what they had in there. Bones? I don’t know. Could’ve just been sketches or artwork of some kind, but then why call them “specimen display drawers”?

I went back to the picture with the labels on the drawers, cropped it and then dialed up the sharpeness to see if I could read them. Sadly it doesn’t work quite like in the movies (“Enhance. Enhance.”) but I was able to make out a few: “blue-winged tea,” “green-winged teal,” “wood duck,” “mallard,” “other anatidae.”

Thanks for standing in Barrett, (and for the kind words), I hope Scout wasn't doing Tool Man impressions! 😱That's a great report 😊 What a place! 😁 I've also periodically looked for new knife storage solutions these past few years, but haven't found a great solution. I have so many bookcases, I have run out of wall space! 😁👍

Thanks, Jack. Scout loves going to that place, though I have to keep a close eye on her.

Thankfully she listens pretty well, and stayed close behind me while I was wheeling the bookcase out to the truck.

We’re getting to that point with bookcases, too. The three I bought previously replaced three laminated “wood” bookcases we got shortly after Julie and I got married. They were nice enough for what they were, but didn’t really match the style of the rest of our stuff anymore.

Funny thing about the bookcases from the U of M, when I bought the first three, one was missing some shelf brackets, as I mentioned. A sticker inside the top of each bookcase gave me the manufacturer (Herman Miller) as well as the model number, and it wasn’t too much trouble to find some more brackets. One of the things that came up when I searched the model number was a current price book for Herman Miller office furniture. The price listed for the exact same bookcase was $1,480. 😳 The most I paid for one bookcase was $20.

Barrett, thanks for letting us wander with you and Scout. The warehouse would be my downfall( junk collector at times).

Oh there’s plenty of junk. 🤣

Here’s a weird thing I saw there a while back, some sort of sealed vacuum chamber with gloves built in for handling whatever’s inside.

Thanks for taking us along. I didn't know about this [place. I may have to check it out sometime 👍

It’s worth a look, at least once. 🙂 Hey, did you know there’s a knife show in Bloomington today and tomorrow? I only found out about it last week, and I think this is just their second year, so I’m not really sure what to expect, but I’m going to check it out this afternoon. H herder will be there, too.

I did know about it. It's only a couple of minutes away from my house. I was thinking of going tomorrow. I'm getting my covid booster at 2:30 this afternoon but I might try to stop in on my way home. I'll message you if I do 👍
