Happy US Independence Day Guardians, I hope you're all having a great day in the USA. The cause of US independence was a popular one in Sheffield, as was Tom Paine, which led to newspaper editors having to flee the country, imprisoned individuals, and armed cavalry charges into the people. The cutler's favourite 'poet', Joseph Mather, took great personal risk to write, and perform, this seditious ditty, particularly as it was sung to the tune of 'God Save The King'!
God save great Thomas Paine,
His “Rights of Man” to explain
To ev’ry soul.
He makes the blind to see
What dupes and slaves they be,
And points out liberty,
From pole to pole.
Thousands cry “church and king”
That well deserve to swing,
All must allow:
Birmingham blush for shame,
Manchester do the same,
Infamous is your name,
Patriots vow.
Pull proud oppressors down,
Knock off each tyrant’s crown,
And break his sword;
Down with aristocracy,
Set up democracy,
And from hypocrisy
Save us good Lord.
Why should despotic pride
Usurp on every side?
Let us be free;
Grant freedom’s arms success,
And all her efforts bless,
Plant thro’ the universe
Liberty’s tree.
Facts are seditious things
When they touch courts and kings,
Armies are rais’d,
Barracks and bastiles built,
Innocence charged with guilt,
Blood most unjustly spilt,
Gods stand amaz’d.
Despots may howl and yell,
Tho’ they’re in league with hell
They’ll not reign long;
Satan may lead the van,
And do the worst he can,
Paine and his Rights of Man
Shall be my song.
On this side of The Pond, despite the British General Election today, Leeds Market has been pretty normal, though several regular stall holders (the usual suspects), failed to turn up. This was most likely because of the weather, as strong winds, of up to 30mph, have made life difficult, and the temperature, even when the sun came out, did not rise above the early 60's. I missed Tool Man's breakfast sandwich, but Boring Ray told me it was as big as ever, and the fat man certainly didn't go hungry, with several doughnuts, multiple chocolate biscuits, more sandwiches, and a couple of pork pies, slipping down his greedy gullet. A number of our regulars failed to show for various reasons, holidays, hospital appointments, etc. Old Brian is looking pretty old and frail these past few weeks. The chap with the 4 eyes is Scooby, one of Tool Man's old biker mates, who occasionally calls down to see us.

Wolfie had an hour off work, so I bought him lunch in the market, which made a nice change. Unfortunately, I left my camera at the stall, so wasn't able to capture the woman we saw, whose head was swathed in strips of tin foil!I did snap the Count of Corned Beef Island

Happy 4th everyone. Had to go with an American lamb today. Always a pleasure to carry a Charlie lamb. Played a round with my dad and relaxing now waiting for some smoked Brats.

Thanks SteveI know we get a lot of laughs (in a good-natured way, of course) at Tool Man’s expense, but I’ll say this: from all the pictures you post of him, he seems like a pretty happy guy.
Fantastic character in that wood, Steve!
Sounds like a pretty good day, Paul.
We had originally planned to go to a parade and see some fireworks tonight, but both got rained out, so we took the kids to a movie instead. That was perfectly fine with me. Parades and large crowds are really my idea of a good time, and while watching fireworks with the kids is fun, having to show up hours ahead of time to get a good spot isn’t.
Sweet-looking Lamb Pete, and the book looks interestingHappy Independence Day ! Hoping all of you are having a good day wherever you are. I am watching the Gulf of Mexico and hoping the storm stays south of our friends on the Texas coast, @Prester John @TXGatorbait
Enjoying this Cosimo who I am calling - #2

Great to have you onboard my friendThe amount of different and amazing new Lambsfoot Knives being produced now is stunning! I think we all need to thank you for this awakening of this amazing pattern, I remember myself walking past the Lambsfoot pattern many times, and not really "clicking" but then it hit me and I love them, Charlie too with his input of his takings of the Lambsfoot Knife- This is SUCH a great place to be.
Nice choice Jeremy, I hope you've recovered from your recent travels, and that work has eased off some
Nice piece of blackthorn with Violet Mitch
Smashing David

He is Barrett, he doesn't over-think things...well, he can't really!I know we get a lot of laughs (in a good-natured way, of course) at Tool Man’s expense, but I’ll say this: from all the pictures you post of him, he seems like a pretty happy guy.
Sorry to hear about the rain mate, hope the kids weren't too disappointed. Good morning Guardians, July 4th celebrations seem a little low-key here, compared to in the past, but I hope all our US members had a great dayHere, I woke up to a change of administration, which was no surprise whatsoever. I think last night was the first time I haven't listened to the election results on the radio (or TV) since the early 1970's. No change in the weather, it's still dull, and unseasonably cold I'm afraid. I won't be doing much today, probably just catching up with some things in the house. Carrying my '19 sample today
Have a great day Guardians

I imagine not Mitch, just buying a blackthorn shank is an expensive endeavour, even here, asnd they have definitely increased in price in the past few yearsThanks Jack.
Yeah you don't see many examples of blackthorn here. I do have a big 1 had sent over from Ireland Yeats ago, they have definitely gone up.
Ah to be able to scoure the second hand shops for sticks
Hope the change of government works for you
Nice picture!
Have a good day.
Nice Black Friday choice Jer
Thank you Steve, it even survived the Butter-Fingered Oaf!Great looking '19![]()
Thanks Jack, went back the the office this week for a few days before the holiday yesterday. They were both “catch up on what you missed over the past two weeks” work days, but I think I’m all set moving forward.Sweet-looking Lamb Pete, and the book looks interestingHope everyone is safe from the storm

I hope you didn't have too much to catch up on JeremyThanks Jack, went back the the office this week for a few days before the holiday yesterday. They were both “catch up on what you missed over the past two weeks” work days, but I think I’m all set moving forward.
Looks like we brought the good weather for your season over when we were there and you’ve returned to normal (or colder) weather since we’ve departed.
Nice lamb with you today.![]()
I imagine not Mitch, just buying a blackthorn shank is an expensive endeavour, even here, asnd they have definitely increased in price in the past few yearsI never go in second hand shops, but I should remedy that. There's a rather unpleasant old man, who lives somewhere near me, and whom Tool Man has a particular dislike for, and he has an entire wardrobe of Dead Man's Clothes, including a recently acquired blackthorn stick he swaggers round with. If he gets hit on the head with a spanner, in the market, one day, I'll be sure to kick it under the stall!
I've generally found that whichever party is in government, ordinary folks get poorer, and I suspect it'll be much the same for the next five years
Thanks mate, you too

If tool Man doesn't like him, must be no good!
