Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Mmm! Eyeball pie! :D Thanks for the positive reaction to Black Jack. :)
I see the Eye of Sauron is starting to hang out with more nefarious characters than has previously been the case!!:(:rolleyes:

Your right GT. I should be more select in the company I keep :D

Which brings up something I've been thinking about. We should have a nice sew on Guardians crest :D

Definitely Dave! With the motto of course! :D

How about "Quod Recta quod Veritas"? (The grammar is probably wrong). It could be a blade etch on the 2019 knife....

Still stunning, that ironwood!
Nothing really exciting planned, but going to see me Mum. Turned 88 today. Still kicking!

Hope your mum had a great birthday  88 is some mean feat

Fascinating Barrett, thank you very much for posting the pics and the link :) That machine was one of my favourites, and I can remember seeing it for the first time as a child, with my grandmother having to point out the various 'spooks' as they appeared. I believe that particular design might have been devised and built (they are not unique) by Fred Bolland, while the Fire rescue one I showed above was made by Charles Ahrens. Another maker was Vincent Canova. The most prestigious and best-known 'Working Model' designer here was John Dennison of Leeds.

Another favourite of mine was 'The Seance', which is also quite funny. Unfortunately, the one in York museum wasn't working when I visited the other day. I must also make another visit to the Kirkstall Abbey museum in Leeds, which has an excellent collection :) It's a lot simpler, but my all-time favourite might be 'The Laughing Policeman', which I can never resist, and which never fails to make me laugh! :D

A couple of other machines in York, the Aladdin one isn't so interesting, and the Execution one rather grim!

Lots of online info for further reading, but a couple of links here for starters

It certainly seems like a lot longer than a week since I was in York!

Jack, I've probably put pounds and pounds in those machines at the Castle Museum :) I absolutely love them! Thanks for the tip about Kirkstall Abbey museum as well. If ever you find yourself in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard there's a nice collection of them there. Tucked away by the toilets at the back of the building with the cafe in it

What do you think donn donn ?! :D

Good grief. If your eating one of those things you must be completely cured.... :D
Just looking at it gives me gastroenteritis.... :D
If you've run out of decent pie in Yorkshire we've still got some on'th wrong side 'oth Pennines...

Hope everyone is having good weather and an enjoyable weekend
Really nice here today, I've been on the porch enjoying it.

Oh my. Sun...and...and...is that...blue sky...???
Not seen that were I live for almost 3 weeks, and the last time I did it was the first and last day in nearly a month. :( This is what northern Scandinavia must be like.
Lovely shot of the horn covers there

Just been enjoying the last 2 days of Christmas, and of course after taking the decorations down. :(

They're brilliant aren't they mate, I've loved them since I was a kid (though I don't think the museum is anywhere near as good as it was sadly)? :) The Abbey Museum was a nice surprise, it's bigger than it looks glanced from the outside too. I only got a look at it because I was going to the tea rooms with my mate, and his kid, and there was an access problem, so they let us cut through the museum. The guard practically expected us to cover our eyes, so we didn't see anything 'for free'! :D The machines are on the top floor, and you can 'rent' old pennies to operate them  Thanks for the tip about Portsmouth, have you seen the ones in Brid?

No, I wouldn't eat a Gregg's sausage roll, but after lying in bed ill, reading the "news" feed on my phone, and repeatedly reading about their new 'controversial' venture, etc, etc, etc...(have you not seen this?!) I had to try one! :D When I walked in the shop, I think the three middle-aged ladies behind the counter thought I had come to have a go at them about it! :D Smashing pic there my friend, well several of them in fact! Hope you're having a good weekend

A lot of museums aren't as good as they used to be; certainly York Castle Museum is one of them :( but thanks for the tip about Brid. Where are the machines? I occasionally get to Brid' or thereabouts when I visit my mates
I don't bother with British news media anymore so I hadn't seen all the bally-hoo about Gregg's but I think that's hilarious! :D I think I'll stick with proper foo....soz I mean pies :D

I love seeing the pics of the pies you guys post. One day my wife and I are going to get to England and I can try them.

That's a lot of pies! You'll have to emigrate :D

Yes, thanks; we had a good visit today. And she got to meet her recently born great-granddaughter.

That's nice Vince :)

They are definitely an institution here! :D donn donn knows his pies and shops around for quality :) My sausage roll post yesterday was aimed at him because it was from Gregg's, which is the ubiquitous high-street purveyor here, where most folks buy that kind of thing. It's a very long time since I had one of their sausage rolls, but the big post-Xmas 'News Story' here this week (yep, all the hacks are nursing hangovers) was their launch of a new sausage roll, which, bizarrely, generated some very angry responses from a few of their customers  :D

wish they were more like these, straight back no sway!!

will be looking forward to seeing everyone's pictures of the 2019s!

Is that Ironwood Jack, it looks more like Snakewood? Nice-looking knife, and certainly nothing wrong with the various straight or Candle-end Lambsfoot patterns, but I'll give you a challenge, put one of your Swayback Lambsfoot knives in your right pocket for a month, and carry a straight or Candle-end Lambsfoot in the other pocket. If you actually USE the knives, I think that you'll not only come to prefer the Swayback model, but your appreciation of the Lambsfoot pattern in general will be enhanced

I picked up this knife, in Snakewood, out of Wright's 'Seconds' pile, got it very cheap. Looks OK, fancy knife, with coined liners and a file-worked back-spring, but in the hand, it's like holding a pencil!

Candle-end pattern works better with stag I think

In my opinion, a Lambsfoot knife needs a bit more heft, and the ergonomics of the uniquely versatile Lambsfoot blade are enhanced considerably by a Swayback frame

Now THAT is a beautiful Lambsfoot, and a well-used one :) I'm not surprised it spends so much time in your pocket Harry, great knife  I love the super short bolsters you sometimes see on old Lambsfoot knives, always makes me think of George Mallory's Lambsfoot

I buy a yearly pass for the York museums, but everytime I visit the Castle Museum, where I've been going since I was 7, I'm more disappointed. It's the same with the Sheffield museums, some of which are considerably worse  It's a good five years since I was last in Brid, and I'm afraid that I know few of the street names, but then, and for some years previously, the machines, and others from the 60's, were located in a small upstairs arcade/museum just round the corner from the harbour. Do you know the good remainder bookshop, if it is still there, on the road immediately on the right of the harbour (looking in to Brid from the sea)? I remember when many of the machines were just in an ordinary arcade at the other end of the promenade, when I was a kid. I hope they are still to be found anyway

Yes, who can blame you for neglecting the British 'news'?! If it wasn't for the fact I've been stuck in bed so much, and reading the 'news feed' on my phone in a way I never have before, I might well have missed this headline-grabbing story myself! Fair play to Gregg's publicity department I have to say! :D

Lovely vista my friend :)

I hope everyone has a very nice Sunday :) I'm going with these two today

Vegan sausage roll sounds pretty good to me. More importantly, I followed one of your links and read about the White Chocolate Cadbury Eggs !!!

I hope to be able to take that challenge some day. ;) I haven't handled a candle-end Lambsfoot, but is it less comfortable than any other straight handled jackknife?

Me too! The regular version can be pretty rank. The one I had yesterday was a lot better than Gregg's standard sausage rolls! And a lot less unhealthy no doubt  I just picked some random links as the story was all over the news here, and missed the Cream Egg story! :D

Cool  No, not generally, though I find that Snakewood model a bit shiny, round, and narrow. The Swayback version definitely has a better feel to it in my opinion though, and gives the knife better handling characteristics

Old Engineer Old Engineer - Harry I'm getting real close to making that TEW my favorite of your knives. It's perfect.

I don't bother with British news media anymore so I hadn't seen all the bally-hoo
My sentiments exactly David. Just replace "British" with "U.S."

Candle-end pattern works better with stag I think
I really like that.

But the swayback will always be my choice. :)IMG_6283.jpg

That's an interesting and attractive snakewood handle on that Wright folder, Jack. A fine knife all around.

that is correct! ive forgotten myself actually since it has been some time since I chucked away the card containing all the other material handles I have yet to buy. So candle end is the official term eh? :D learned something new, (it reminds me of how I use to call end caps, end bolsters when I first began to sit on the porch more) It boils down to aesthetics for me most of the time as many of my knives are usually symmetrically handled. Tis true tho, I carry often but seldom use the knife.
