I had to call in at the library, and then had a coffee at Charlie's, before catching one of the new fancy all-electric buses (£500,000 apiece, and the poshest in the country I'm told), up the hill to affluent Chapel Allerton.
When I got off the bus, I was surprised to find that the pavements in the commercial heart of the area were covered in a thick layer of frozen snow and ice, far worse than on my side-street. The worst conditions were outside the most expensive cafes and restaurants, where I was about to spend £20 on breakfast. Food was excellent, but you'd think the local burghers could club together for some salt for the pavements

Picking my way slowly back down the hill, I called in that library there, to wish an old friend Happy New Year, then onto the post office, which was actually my reason for going out
