Almost 😉

Refreshing! 😎

Thanks buddy :D

I was thinking about a small town near here, which appears on maps as Slaithwaite. At the town hall and library, that name is also used, but it's actually pronounced 'Slaw'it', and spelled like that on the front of the local shops, etc. That kind of thing is fairly common here. Confuses outsiders sometimes, which is why tourists visiting 'Edinberg' are treated so scornfully by the locals ;)

I noticed that often happens with place names over there. Even seemingly simple names, like Derby, can quickly out you as a foreigner (not that I ever had a chance at convincing anyone otherwise). 😁

Another off day. Just about to kick the oldest two out of the house to get them off to school and got the youngin to deal with the rest of the day. Probably gonna read this book to him a thousand times 😊. Carrying around the stag Charlie lamb today.

I’ve definitely read that one a few times.

That’s a beauty, Bob!

During WW2, Sheffield cutlers were a 'reserved occupation', and excused military service. They all joined up anyway, so the cutlery factories were staffed entirely by old men, and maybe a few younger men with health problems. So, when Stan Shaw was taken on at Ibberson's, as an apprentice, his 'dad' was old Ted Osborne, Ibberson's best cutler. Ted was from a very humble background, but loved making knives, and had actually designed a number of Ibberson's patterns. When he finally retired, the gaffer at the firm, Billy Ibberson generously gave him a bottle of whisky. Ted was well-known for being a strict Methodist, and a teetotaller

I remember you telling that story about Ted Osborne’s retirement gift before. 🫤

Many of my maternal grandfather's family were Methodists (quite big in Sheffield), but my mother was an only child, so they were fairly distant relatives. I remember going to a wedding, as a boy, and the adults were invited to toast the Bride & Groom, with what many of them clearly thought was red wine, and what turned out to be blackcurrant cordial. Ten minutes later, we had our coats on, and were on our way home! :D

My maternal grandparents were Methodists, but they must not have been too strict, because they had a well-stocked wet bar in their house, and when they’d come visit, I remember them always traveling with a leather bag that contained a couple bottles of liquor and mixers. 😁

Classic from day one Barrett.😍

Just read through the lamb flock thread. Amazing stuff. So that whole exercise had me thinking which one I use most. I really thought about it and it’s this one. It sits on my little table next to my chair in the living room. A New production two bladed TEW that Jack sent me some time ago. You’d be surprised how many times I don’t have a knife in my pocket at home. This knife has become the whole families emergency knife. This thing did wonders for Christmas.
