Here's some history of Spofforth Castle, (actually a fortified manor house), which is one of many castles within a half hour's drive of where I live. Spofforth is less well-known, perhaps because it can't be seen from the road, but it's a great place to visit with kids, and it's free, and open all year round. We had an hour here, before heading for lunch at one of our favourite country pubs. A few pics:

I'm glad you folks found it of interest, it's the first time I've been there for a while. It's in a peaceful spot, there was a feller asleep under a tree, not sure how long he'd been there, but he slept through the kids rampaging! :D Spofforth is a small, attractive village, with a shop, a church, and a couple of pubs. It's situated close to the small market town of Wetherby, which grew up as a hub in the short-lived English coaching system :thumbsup:
