I live on one of Leeds most historic streets, a broad-tree lined avenue, where the newer houses were built by Sir Walter Scott. Louis Le Prince, the inventor of motion photography, had a house here, and Charlie Chaplin stayed here when he visited Leeds. The street is covered by a Conservation Order, forbidding the felling of trees, the demolition of walls and buildings, and the addition of modern features (solar panels for example). Sadly, we lost about a third of the old houses in the early 1980's, before the Conservation Order was introduced, and they were demolished and replaced by flats (apartments).

Houses don't come up for sale very often, but over the past decade, a number of the old residents have either passed away, gone to live with family, or gone into care homes. The status of the street is well known, but the first thing virtually every new resident wants to do is fell the trees, dig up the front lawn, and demolish the old Yorkshire Stone front walls to provide extra parking for their multiple vehicles.

The latest casualty is one of the last remaining mature trees in the middle section of the road, next to its oldest house

I often hear people saying that children don't play outdoors anymore, but they do on my street. A little further down the road is what remains of a 'den', built by the youngest of the children who grew up in the house with the felled tree, for him and his mates to play pirates

By coincidence, Wolfie was only telling me yesterday of the fondness of his own children for building dens in the woods, as we did when we were kids

Having walked down to Charlie's, I realised that I had forgotten my wallet, which was in the pocket of the jacket I'd worn yesterday

I had plenty of change in my trouser pockets, so drank my coffee, while I pondered having to trudge back up the hill

After I remembered I had a £20 note in the back of my phone case, the trip to town became less urgent, and I decided to pick up a few things at the shop next door, including a couple of samosas for my lunch

Matt's missus is taking their daughter, Rheia, to a Halloween Party, so the boys are convening at the pub for something to eat, and a couple of pints

Cheers Guardians!
