Gout almost always starts with the big toe, but then gout is a type of arthritis too.

Thanks buddy, they have covered a lot of miles, and I never had the slightest trouble with them until I was in my 40's, so it came as a bit of a shockI hope you get some relief, Jack!!! Feet are so important!!![]()
Thanks Bob, have to see how it goesI hope you find so.e relief tomorrow, Jsck.
Thanks Steve, that is often the first place arthritis starts. I hope you get away without much painI hope they help. I have pain issues with my big toe joints which I think is arthritis.
Thanks buddy, if things continue the way they've been going. I'll be declaring 'EARLY RETIREMENT', and they can all go hang!I hope you can get a better nights sleep tonight !
I had a couple of mates who were crippled by gout, tbough they were definitely Gout Stereotypes!I usually expect Winter to start at the end of Thanksgiving weekend, which is still a couple of weeks away. It's supposed to be melting weather for a couple of days starting tomorrow, but still this might qualify as an early winter.
The Old Farmers' Almanac predicts a winter colder than usual but dryer.
Gout almost always starts with the big toe, but then gout is a type of arthritis too.

Brilliant!I'm sure the BBC had better programming in the 70's
Bit of a twist in the ending though, maybe he was heading back to the pub!

Great to see your Hartshead Barlow buddy![]()
'Waterproof membranes' used to last me about 3 months when I was doing a lot of hiking Gary, they're a bit of a con trick really, and I'd often rather not have them at all. Here's an old article of mine, looking at them. My conclusion was actually edited to appease the advertisers :rolleyes; It's an old piece, but I don't think much has changed

It may be just me, but i don't think their quality is as good as it used to be.
It's Guy Fawkes night hereWhen I first moved to this part of Leeds 25 years ago, folks told me it was 'like Beirut' on Bonfire Night. I scoffed, and told them I used to live in Beirut, but they weren't far wrong, particularly as a local Chinese Fireworks warehouse was robbed that year!
Folks round here sure love fireworks! They have been going off non-stop since before it went dark, about 5 hours ago, and they'll be going off until the early hours
I've opened a bottle of wine, and intend to watch something traditional
Have a great evening Guardians

Ex-Para Steve was over on Nobber Al’s stall, and I’m glad I went over, because he showed me this fascinating 1930’s novelty, he had found in an antique shop the previous day. The grinding wheel turns by hand, and there’s a hole for a replaceable flint, so that sparks are thrown. I’m very envious!

That's the key. A lot of hiking boots are now made with a synthetic outer material. My old leather hiking boots lasted forever because i looked after the leather. Ironically i lost them in a flood.boots with full leather uppers that I kept treated for water repellency,
Barrett it's my own silly fault. I have all the bells and whistles, multifocal, anti glare and transitional lenses for the sun, as I wear them full time. I used to fall for the 2 pair but I really only wear the 1. I did try a new mob this time and seem pretty goodYeah, they mention at the beginning of that video that he was planning to visit his dead mate’s widow, but they never said if she was actually expecting him.Maybe she didn’t fancy a visit, and made herself scarce when she he heard he was down at the pub.
Funny story, when I posted that the other day (I guess it was a week ago now), it was an old pic, and I hadn’t actually grabbed the knife yet that day (I guess it was more of a this-is-what-I’m-going-to-carry sort of post). When I went to actually get the knife, I couldn’t find it.Spent the next day or so looking all over the house, in my truck, couldn’t find it anywhere. Finally it turned up in the pocket of a pair of shorts I could have sworn I hadn’t worn in months, certainly not since the last time I’d seen that knife, which hadn’t been that long ago. But I guess I wore them at some point, and left the HHB in the pocket. I’m just glad I found it!
Always interesting to see some of your old articles, Jack, especially the ones about boots.I’ve never had any issues with any of the boots I’ve had with waterproof membranes, but I never really put them through very hard testing, either, even when I used to hike and camp. I’ve also always had them in boots with full leather uppers that I kept treated for water repellency, so perhaps the membranes were really only acting as a backup anyways.
Sadly seems to be the case with most things these days.
Hope you enjoyed your Bonfire Night, Jack!
That’s interesting, Jack. H herder has an old knife-collecting buddy, Myron, who I got to meet and spend time with at the Oregon show the last couple years (Neal and Myron have been going to Oregon together for years). Myron also collects and restores automatons (they talked about it some on the Catch Bit podcast when Myron was a guest), and has several knife sharpening ones You can see some of them in this video, starting at 1:21.
I’m not familiar with that particular music-playing device, Will, but I think someone might’ve been drunk when they installed the screen.
Sorry to hear your new glasses were so pricey, Mitch. I got a new pair earlier this year. It had been 6 or 7 years since I got my previous pair, and my first eye exam in (no joke) 20 years. When I lived back in Arkansas, we used to go to this great local optician’s shop run by a husband and wife. My prescription has never been very strong and my vision never really changed, and while they were (of course) supposed to require me to have a new prescription every two years, they always just let it slide.
(It probably helped that they didn’t have an in-house optometrist and, thus, didn’t offer exams, so they weren’t losing any business either way. I also spent a lot on glasses there over the years.Even after we moved out of state, if I needed a new pair I’d wait until we were visiting for holidays and buy them there. Sadly the husband passed away a few years back, and the wife retired and moved out of state.)
Hope all y’all had a good weekend and your week is off to a good start. Eleanor and I went to see Back to the Future in theaters on Saturday (they’re a little late on the 40th anniversary showing, as the movie originally came out in July). I never had a chance to see it in a theater before (I was only a few days old when it came out), so that was fun.
I’m afraid this is another recycled pic, but I’ve carried both of these at different points over the last week.

Well done Tyson, that doesn't look dumb to me at all!I spent my free time the last few nights or so building what I have been calling the Dumbest Compost Bin in the World©. I built in on the concrete slab because it's much easier to get it all together on a more-or-less flat surface.

Finished it up last night, and needed to move it into place today, so I rednecked together the Dumbest Dolley in the World© and Dawn and I got it moved.

Now burning a few odds and ends while we sip a little wine. GL-24 has been in action throughout this project.

Dawn wants me to point out that I'm wearing a three-wolves howling shirt while we do this. Ironically? Or maybe I'm just that classy.
Essential to any Lambsfoot collection!

LOL!I'd almost forgotten myself, but a lot of folks didn't have telephones here, well into the 80's Barrett, so it was fairly common to just call in on folks, even when they lived elsewhere. I remember coming unstuck a few times myself, but it was just part of life then, and no big drama. It was the same with meeting friends, you had to be on time

One night, when I was younger, I met this gorgeous girl who gave me her number. For some reason, Wolfie put it in my phone for me, and put in the wrong number!I never saw her again!

I'm glad you found it mateUnfortunately, that kind of thing is rapidly becoming the story of my life!

Thanks buddyPart of the conclusion that was edited out, was that if you wanted dry feet, buy leather!
I had some lightweight leather boots with a membrane, where it might have made a little difference, but I actually preferred the unlined version, which was roomier and more breathable. Some of my leather mountain boots came with membranes, but they were always well-waxed, and I generally wore full gaiters in the snow anyway. The soles are too stiff for my old feet now, and climbing mountains is a distant memory anyway, unfortunately

Absolutely fascinating Barrett, what a fantastic collectionI have posted before about the old automata machines they used to have here, mainly at the seaside. There is a small museum in Leeds that has a collection, and I'll have to get down there sometime to take pics (though they are awkward to photograph because of the bright lights and reflective glass

That boot looks like it's built like one of their front end.loaders.View attachment 3023431
All this boots talk reminds me of Jack's yuppie who rudely rejected and corrected Jack's advice on fabric boots, and was pleasant to imagine up to his neck in mud despite his superior boots.
That guy may have been carefully selecting the best boots for a garden party or drinks on the patio, like Jeremy Clarkson's "Those of you who need a Range Rover because you live on a lane that sometimes has a leaf on it".
I've had them a few years, and nothing is showing any sign of letting go. I think the treads are clever, too, with edges angled forwards and backwards. That boot looks like it's built like one of their front end.loaders.![]()
