Busy weekend, you know, didn't know this was going on.

Add 'no knife-- donation made' after my name, Codger/Del. Rona (the main squeeze-fiancee) sent our checks in today to the American Red Cross, although the Salvation army is usually what I prefer.

Mike, it is good of you to help Del keep track of things.

Phil

Mine turned into the Salvation Army today. I wasn't surprised because we are so close to San Antonio, but the guy said we have a few displaced folks here in Kerrville. Between the S/A and some local church groups they're doing okay considering what they've been through. I'm taking a load of clothes tomorrow.

Paul

Paul, evacuees are being spread across the nation to nearly every state as fast as transportation and sponsors can be arranged. From tiny Osceola Arkansas to Phoenix and all points inbetween. Churches, synogogues, mosques, fraternal organizations, and private citizens are coming to the fore. To my way of thinking, that is how it should be.

I have always been a staunch advocate of individual responsibility. But that does include responsibility to give your neighbor, your countrymen a hand up when disaster strikes. Not a handout mind you. A big difference there. A lot of these folk have already gone to work where they landed and will not be long in getting back on their feet by their own sweat and determination. THIS is the American spirit I am most proud of. And this spirit certainly does not exclude our Canadian brothers who sent teams early on, and a special one whose Effort we continue here.

Rich,

It is most impressive that these people, along with rescue teams from California were on-site TWO DAYS before FEMA, as were the Salvation Army (portable canteens) and the Red Cross (shelters and kitchens).

Here is the first post that began the donation drive we now refer to as "The Effort". As you can see, this first group of knives will be slated for shipping addresses at 11:00 PM EST tonight.

I'm sitting here and my heart is going out to those unfortunate folks who have had their hearts turned upside down.
No home, no jobs, no clothes and maybe, seemingly no hope!
I have 3 NIB (pre-2004) Schrade 8OT and 3 NIB (pre-2004) Uncle Henry 897UH (my favourite) knives that I'm putting up here.
The 3 highest donations (one knife per person please) with the individuals making the donations to either the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army and advising me of the donation will get each a knife (let me know what model bearing in mind there's only 3 of each model). The 3 highest donations on each model will have a knife shipped to them via Canada Post/USPS.
Say closing Wednesday evening at 11:00 PM EST?
I'll pay the shipping to you.
I've asked Larry to post a photo.

As The Effort progressed, LT posted this:

Big Heart,.......when this is finished if you will just total up the knives you need and let me know everyone you feel who should get a knife just tell me and they will get a Schrade ( again from what stock I have available model may differ.) You have contributed enough and I have more than you. Just send the addresses or I can send them to you. Keep up the good work keep carrying the ball.

So it is likely that more than six knives will be sent out tomorrow. For the donors who will receive a knife from this first round, please be sure that Delander has your correct mailing address. He will provide the bonus names to LT. Easier to keep straight that way!

In the hours leading up to the close of this round of The Effort, we will hopefully receive further offers of donations of knives and accessories for the second round. I have already announced one knife donation here:

Del has a great idea here........When his knives are all donated to the highest donors, I will put up for bids this knife.....

It is a new in the box Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation WR1 Water Rat Dive Knife gift set with sheath and flashlight. The blade is mirror polished Schrade+ stainless with the RMEF etch. This knife has already been retailed once, so RMEF has received a donation from it. Can we get a bigger donation for hurricane relief? Donation for this limited edition knife set will not start until Del's donation is completed.

Be sure to check in tonight. It is certainly not too late to add donations on the first group of knives folks. The need for aid is still great as more people are evacuated from the floodwaters daily.

Adding a valid argument to why certain things should be done by private groups and not the federal government... but I digress.

Just keep praying for all them, the storm was only the beginning of the suffering. :(

$100 Donation sent to the Salvation Army this morning :)

Glenn

As said by Codger, all your postal address are required.
If you haven't sent me your addresses as yet, please be sure to do so.
The response by forum members and guests has been terrific- great job folks.
Del

my share of the UH will be donated today, locally to the red cross. They have a stand setup over by wal-mart, i'll drop it off today (is that o.k?)
thanks

Huh? Oh, I thought this wasn't over till 11 PM. So what's the final tally?
The latest talley is above. Lt has offered to toss in a few blades (also see above) to make up for any substantial donors that Del decides are missing out on the 8OT/897UH give away. Yes, it does not end until 11:00 PM EST.
Some are sending in their donations early, and that is fine, since none of us are receiving them. It is all in the spirit of trust, caring, and cooperation driving this Effort.

Codger

PS - Don't forget to check in several times this evening as new items are added for the next round of donations!

I must say that this makes me proud to be a member of this forum, and to know such an upstanding group of men who have much, much more in common than a dedication to knives and knife collecting.

Thank you one and all! And especially Del for making this effort a reality!

Codger

I, too, must show my appreciation for how generous BF members have been so far. And we have to figure out what Glennbad is getting!
