New Scenario:

Airgun or .22lr

Now here's a different option. Say you wanted a gun which could help you get food but keep you from being heard. In essence, you don't want to give away your location but want to be able to hunt and eat. I know that no gun will absolutely accomplish this. So, how much louder is a 22lr than one of the higher powered air guns? Is there a way to have a low noise 22lr?

In some states, you can get a permit to own a silencer. I am not sure which states allow them but That would be the first thing that I would check on. Other that that, a long barrel with 22 shorts is as quiet as it gets.

You could try a bow or crossbow.

simple... this is what i use...

I have a ruger MK II with a integrated baffel suppressor. Very cool. Super hard hitting and sounds like a loud pellet gun. This is my preference by far.

Aquila Colibri I think that is how to spell it they are powderless bullets for .22's they work great in pistols and in a rifle you only hear the click of the hammer. They wont cycle semi auto's but are 350 FPS or 500 for the super colibri. I bought some from cheaper than dirt a few years ago and I didn't even have to pay haz mat shipping. I have shot birds with them and they are fun to practice with in town for me because it is quieter that a air rifle.

You can also buy sub-sonic .22LR ammo which is preeeeeeety quiet. :foot:

My dad has one of the hunting type air rifles and I've shot it a few times. They're okay but the trigger pull is really heavy and sloppy. I own a 10/22 and replaced the hammer with a Volquartsen polished hammer and the trigger is like butter. With scope the whole setup costs about 200.

I have a break barrel air rifle that sounds, looks, and kicks just like a .22.

Its not the best to shoot around unsuspecting people.

My best buddy has an $500 air rifle !!! It has plenty of knock down power but it is louder than a 22 and it has a pretty distinct CRAAACCKKK!! We shot it at my house in town and he had only shot it once before after we heard how loud it was we both ran for the door. I have tried sniper sub sonics they are pretty quiet but they do not cycle in semi autos and the feed like crap .

Been thinking about this a lot lately.

I am a hunter and have plenty of powder burners from .22 to .270 to 12 Gauge. I also own airguns.

My decision?

I'm buying a .22 air rifle with a velocity of around 900 fps with lead pellets.

You can carry 1,000 rounds of ammo in your hip pocket.

It can easily take a turkey, rabbit, squirrel, waterfowl, quail, racoon, Ptarmigan, and in a pinch, a coyote. Shoot a person or a deer at short range, and they are gonna die too. Maybe not quickly, but they are gonna die.

If you push much over 1,000 FPS you will enter the sound barrier range and the gun becomes VERY loud. A springer with a tarred spring will last forever and be far quieter than any .22LR.

Be careful when you buy. Most airgun velocities are stated with PBA or similar ammo which results in higher velocity, but less Ft Lbs of energy.

I will probably buy a Sheridan Super Streak. 900 + FPS muzzle velocity in .22. Scope AND iron sights. But there are lots of good choices from Beeman and Gamo also.

The new airguns are not the old "red ryders" we are used to. They are formidible weapons.

100 yard shots on game are not only possible, they are routine at this point.

You have to be joking right, the old air rifle i used to shoot would MAYBE knock over tin can at 20 feet, IF it was not windy, and you are talking about killing things with it?
