gun - not to be heard

I don't know how far removed from reality NZ is, but if you don't think 1,000 FPS with 16 grain .22 pellets can't take major game, you need to become much more well informed.

There are numerous airgun hunting forums on the web. Please check them out.

look up airgun hunting on youtube...some cool videos that show you where the sport is at....pretty impressive shots for a bb gun ;)

You have to be joking right, the old air rifle i used to shoot would MAYBE knock over tin can at 20 feet, IF it was not windy, and you are talking about killing things with it?
Todays AirGuns have a lot more power, than the ones we had when we were kids.

ETA: I vote for a Silencer. Unless the Government decides to confiscate them from the Law Abiding Citizens.

I know its not what your looking for exactly, but how about a sling shot? They are cheap ($6 from wal-mart), quiet, small, have unlimited ammo (pebbles) and would be perfect for a squirrel.

iBlade and anyone else who doubts what a modern airgun (pellet gun, not a BB gun) can do, check out www.pyramidair.com

including this .50 hunting air rifle.

Here is a scoped .22 variable power airgun suitable for small game.

Here is the latest, American technology, the reports are that it rival European airguns costing 2-3x the price.

Carry a 64oz Soda bottle with your favorite beverage along with your 22

Slingshot. Excellent suggestion also.

AND you can improvise ammo.

Took MANY a rabbit with one back in the day.

Get a spare set of bands.

Good to 40 yards or so.

One shot - everyone wonders wher it came from

Two shots - everone knows

Or you could just use a BFR and make no noise

Seriously, an airgun is quieter than a powder burner. No discussion needed.

I also use the CCI CB longs. Work best in a bolt action but you can single feed/single extract them in a Marlin or Ruger semi-auto. When shooting in a heavy foliage area, even people who are fairly close have trouble hearing them.

MBTull,

Good point---and it doesn't even have to be a "modern" airgun. I read that one of the most impressive (to the Natives) weapons carried by Lewis & Clark was an air rifle. In fact, experts believe that the rifle was recently discovered by a collector based on the similarity of repairs to those described in L&K's journals.

Napolean issued a doctrine that any enemy caught with an air rifle was to be put to death immediately.

Too silent. Too deadly

Yes, before the .22.

But after the big caliber powder burner.

Seriously.

Before this discussion goes further, everyone compare .22 LR ballistics to .22 pellet ballistics.

The new airguns have MAJOR LEAGUE performance.

Given the choice between taking game with a .22 LR and a .22 airgun, I ill take a .22 LR every time

Given the choice for taking game where I need a low noise alternative, I will take a .22 airgun EVERY F'N time!!

If you use your surrondings effectively, there is only one choice

Trees can echo a sound in any direction depending on the side of the tree you place the barrel. A soda bottle will effectively eliminate any sound if you know how to use it. Range and accuracy? well that is not even a question between the two IMO
