H&K 14715 AXIS (D2 blade) EDC alternative to 950 Rift?

I have noticed slight awkward feel I have in opening the knife with HK14715 when I compare with Contego810 side by side. (Yeah, double fisted.. ;) ) Here is the radius distance from pivot pin to the thumb stud.
HK AXIS 14715: 0.82"
Rift 950: 0.99"
Contego 810: 0.94"

So, diameter difference between 14715 vs. 950 is 0.36" Given that HK14715 is heavier blade, I think it would be easier if the thumb stud is placed a little bit more toward the tip. of cause your mileage may vary for some of you who enjoy opening Adamas 375.

This is a very helpful post. Thank you! Would you happen to know how these measurements compare to the full size Griptilian?

I don't have Griptilian 551 with me (I have 550HG now), so it is a guess. I think it is closer to 0.9x" if not mistaken.

Benefit of keeping Blade thickness:

The HK AXIS 14715 shape is a bit odd shaped modified drop point. I think it is because it meant to keeps blade thickness more to the tip.

Here is the measurement of blade thickness.

HK AXIS 14815 0.146" (D2)
Barrage 581 0.121" (M390)
Contego 810 0.156" (CPM-M4)

Here is side view of 581, 14715 and 810 (950 is very similar)

Barrage 581, HK AXIS 14715, and Contego 810:

The length of redline is how long each blade keeps same thickness.

Barrage 581 2.34"
HK AXIS 14715 3.79"
Contego 810 3.87"

I must say that both Osborne Tanto (Modified reverse American Tanto) design keeps thickness of the blade toward very tip with .25" of

triangular tip.

I feel that a knife intended to have steady thrust cut, this would allow more rigidness of the blade. For the shape of 14715, it may be

BKC 's fusion of Modified drop point without sacrificing blade rigidity.

How do you like yours so far?
I dig it! Very grippy G10, similar to one of my newer Emersons. Contoured around the edges as not to feel blocky. Not too small (a normal gripe for me with my big hands). Axis lock and thumbstud easily accessible. Comfortable in multiple grips. D2 blade holds an edge and isn't terribly hard to resharpen. The blade thickness is a plus and the design makes it ideal for most of my purposes. Wouldn't hesitate to buy again.

I have now had one I purchased from Benchmade for about a month and really like it. Was looking for something somewhat Adamas-like, but not as big. This one fits the bill. Small enough to carry in jeans (but not in a pair of khaki's to work). Love the D2 steel. Came razor sharp like my Mini-Grip in 440C did years ago.

I was out grabbing a Orange Alox SAC and saw this and wanted to give one a shot. I like everything about the specs for the price (under $100). One thing I really like is the non-nested liners, so I'll be making some custom scales for this one in orange or blue G10 probably to take the "tactical" look away and make some ergo adjustments possibly.

This knife grows on me black coated or not. It's a very classic shape, reminds me a lot of Emerson's offerings but with the Axis sweetness.

My Combo Edge model came with a much finer/weaker tip. I'm not sure if mine was just overground or if they changed the geometry, so back it went. Curious though...

LOL. I hope this is a joke. If not, and you're worried about breaking that tip, you need to stop using a knife for non knife tasks. That is a stout tip bro.

Is this HK model made completely in the US like other benchmades? I really like this one.

Yes. It's in US CPM-D2 steel as well. Their import models are usually in the bargain steels. I love my Nitrous Blitz, and just may need to get this beauty. And tip-up carry too! I still need to convert the Blitz, just don't have the right tap and stuff.

I prefer a stouter tip, to each his own... But the point is, that there appears to be a fair bit of variance from one 14715 to the next. I find that curious.
