Hi.
I guess some sort of update would be in order. The pic wasn't ready to be released. It was put on a military forum for input and it "leaked" out.
The knife was designed by Guy Rafaeli. He teaches MBC to Israeli military. He needed a knife for the Seals and nothing available met his needs. He worked on a design for quite a while and in the end, he realized that his ideal design was very similar to a previous design that he had seen as a model produced by Al Mar (when he was alive) called the "Warrior". He wanted Spyderco tomake it because of our quality history and H1 material. His market is a group of elite soldiers.
I incorrectly thought it was a Michael Echanis design. In our quest for the history of the original RGEO (reverse grip edge out) design, we're learning a lot.
While Guy's variation is quite a bit different from the earlier versions, the distinctive "Crossed "S" look" shows it to be a "type" or "species" of the earlier designs.
We've been communicating with Bob Taylor, Erik Remmen and others, for history bits and we'd like to provide this information, with pics.. We think that it is good information to make available when a design stands the test of time.
(Humans have achieved our high degree of succes because we share knowldege and information).
Bob and Erik have been most helpful. I guess the original design was created by Randy Wanner and Bob Taylor. Bob gives most of the credit to Randy.
Guy Rafeli wanted the design to be produced in H1 and he felt that, for strength, it needed to have a core thickness of 4.0mm. The design took a while to refine, many models were made. The H1 took a while to develop as 3.0mm was the thickest it could be made earlier.
The mold is finished for the FRN scales. The bi-directional volcano grip tecture provdes much grip with and without gloves. The skeletonized full tang is light and strong. The blades are cut.
We're refining a sheath design for a cloth sheath with an insert. I'd like to offer the model with a Boltaron (Kydex) sheath as well.
It's a purpose built design, which is a smaller market. It's expensive to make and price will be high which also reduces the market size. If the demand is there, we can also make a VG-10 version that would be a little less expensive.
As soon as we've got some sheaths close to being nailed down, we'll get some pics to you.
